The impact of colonial economy combined with the consequences of fragmentation of Oriya-speaking areas brought about colossal change in the material condition of the people of Orissa. The poverty and starvation had taken root among the common mass of Orissa while a select class lived a parasitic life in abundance of wealth, thriving easy on the cheaply available labour and the back-breaking toil of the farmers and artisans. The crux of the problem was that indigenous economic system remained nearly intact, though stagnant and ossified, scarcely able to release more wealth to meet the growing demands. Even today any excursion to an Orissan village, unless modernised under the Five Year Plans, reveal to an observer that traditional economy in its structure in the system that supports the land-based people, however inadequately. This was the root cause of extreme economic backwardness of colonial Orissa. This work will provide some insight into the operation of a vital system in regional economy so that defects that still continue to plague it may be remedied towards a healthy regeneration of this system.

It discusses the dialectical entanglements of rituals conducted for and by kings (including, ‘little kings’ and ‘jungle kings’) with the wider social, political, cultural, historical, religious and economic contexts in which they were embedded. Part I begins with a triangular comparison of kingship among the Shilluks of East Africa, the Gajapatis of eastern India and kings in Renaissance France. The essay entitled the ‘King’s Three Bodies’ makes use of Ernst H. Kantorowicz’s classical study, The King’s Two Bodies in medieval political theology and extends it, not only in terms of the numbers of bodies that are found to be significant, but also theoretically. Another significant essay in this part looks at the unexpected but significant theoretical impact of social anthropological studies of acephalous, segmentary lineage societies in Africa on Indian historiography. The second part of this volume consists of three chapters dealing with the royal patronage of tribal and Hindu goddesses in Eastern India, while the third part presents studies on sleeping (and dreaming) kings and on the power of dead kings, a discussion of A.M. However, it is concerned neither with the great kingdoms of central Orissa, nor with the little kingdoms lying on the coast or in the fertile river valleys of Orissa, but with jungle kingdoms lying in the remote hinterland of south Orissa. The discussion is based on material collected by the author during extensive fieldwork and archival research in Orissa during the 1990s. Presenting and interpreting his ethnohistorical data, the author also addresses several issues of more general importance: the nature of kingship and the state in colonial and post-colonial India; the politics of ritual and the rituals of politics; the relation between kings and tribes, the Hinduization of tribal deities; the complementarity of tribal and royal principles of action and organization; or the uses of historical reconstructions as legitimating strategies. It is argued that these and other topics can be shown in new light, not although but because a political unit is the focus of research which hitherto has experienced hardly any scholarly attention: the jungle kingdom.
