Book excerpt: Excerpt from Final Report of the Ontario Game and Fisheries Commission, 1909-1911 May it Please Your Honour, - The undersigned, appointed by commission under the Great Seal of the Prnvince, bearing dale the seventeenth day of July, A.D. 1909. to make enquiries, take evidence, and report generally upon all matters appertaining to the game fish, the fisheries and the game of the Province of Ontario, which may injuriously affect the same, and any methods possible to increase their economic and other value to the masses of the people, begs leave herewith to submit his final report. The instructions accompanying the Commission direct that the investigation shall include the following particulars: (1) The condition of the fisheries and game within the Province of Ontario and the adjacent waters, including: (2) The advisability of establishing provincial fish hatcheries, including tin; estimated cost of maintenance and construction, the best method* of operation, and Other matters relating thereto; (3) The alleged existence of contracts between fishermen within the Province of Ontario and foreign fish companies and individuals, together with the effect of such contracts (if any) upon the fisheries of Ontario; (4) The matter of foreign fish companies and individuals encouraging breaches of the law on the part of fishermen, and others resident in Ontario; (5) The qualifications, conditions of service, skill, efficiency (physical and otherwise), desirable for fisheries and game officials; (6) The condition of the present equipment of the Department, together with the additional requirements (if any) in this regard in the matter of launches, boats, etc.; About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Final Report of the Ontario Game and Fisheries Commission, 1909-1911 Ontario's whitefish, leaving but a small margin at a high figure for her own citizens, will be discussed in a subsequent section; but the fact remains, however, that the diminution in the annual catch of Whitefish has been so marked and persistent, in Spite of increased and better appli auces, that it must be open to the gravest doubt whether, under the present system of administration and regulation, the fisheries are not being actually destroyed, instead of merely depleted, for it must be remembered that to rehabilitate exhausted fisheries entails artificial production on a large scale; that artificial production on a large scale is only possible when there is an abundant supply of parent fish, and that the prolonged absence of Schools of Whitefish from certain of their former habitats may result, under the adaptable laws of nature, in a transforma tion of conditions such as to render those waters no longer as suitable for sustaining Whitefish life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Annual Report of the Game and Fisheries of the Province of Ontario, 1907 Sir, - I have the honour to transmit herewith report of the work of the Department of Game and Fisheries for the year ending 31st December, 1907. This being the first report of the consolidated department of Game and Fisheries, it will be in order to refer to the cause or reason for merging what had previously been two departments. During the Session of the Legislature of 1907, an Act passed and entitled "An Act respecting Game, Fur-bearing Animals, and Fisheries of Ontario," which enacts as follows, viz.: "The administration of this Act, and of all matters relating to fish and game in the Province shall be under the control and direction of the Minister, and shall constitute a branch of the public service, to be known as the Game and Fisheries Branch." The Act further enacts: "The Board of Game Commissioners of the Province is hereby abolished." It is further provided that the administration of the Game and Fisheries Branch shall, under the Minister, be in charge of the chief officer thereof, who shall be known as the Superintendent of Game and Fisheries. I, having the honour to be appointed to the responsible position of Superintendent, have under somewhat difficult circumstances endeavored to perform the duties of the position to the best of my humble ability, and I trust in some measure satisfactory to you. The usual statistics, so far as procurable, representing quantities and values of the fisheries, plants, etc., with other matters pertaining to the fish and game of the Province, will be found in the usual order. The Department, with one Inspector and one Acting Inspector, and a full staff of seven Game and Fish Wardens in charge of districts, has been able to obtain a large amount of valuable and much needed information for use in the future administration of Game and Fisheries. The duties of these officers have been faithfully performed, with credit to themselves and to the Department.
