Book The United Nations Commission on Human Rights

Download or read book The United Nations Commission on Human Rights written by John P. Pace and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-10 with total page 1015 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, John P. Pace provides the most complete account to-date of the United Nations human rights programme, both in substance and in chronological breadth. Pace worked at the heart of this programme for over thirty years, including as the Secretary of the Commission on Human Rights, and Coordinator of the World Conference on Human Rights, which took place in Vienna in 1993. He traces the issues taken up by the Commission after its launch in 1946, and the methods undertaken to enhance absorption and domestication of international human rights standards. He lays out the special procedures carried out by the UN, and the emergence of international human rights law. The book then turns to the establishment of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the mainstreaming of human rights across the United Nations system, eventually leading to the establishment of the Human Rights Council to replace the Commission in 2006. Many of the problems we face today, including conflict, poverty, and environmental issues, have their roots in human rights problems. This book identifies what has been done at the international level in the past, and points towards what still needs to be done for the future.

Book Greening International Institutions

Download or read book Greening International Institutions written by Jacob Werksman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2009. This title contains a diverse collection of pieces from which the reader can draw an understanding of the shape and function of the institutions discussed within, the scope of their activities, and the niche they occupy in the larger system. Werksman reveals a pattern that organizations grow and contract erratically and organically in response to competing demands, concerns and resources. This volume aims to raise questions as to whether the demands of sustainable development require a more fundamental push against the inertia of institutional culture.

Book The Politics of International Environmental Management

Download or read book The Politics of International Environmental Management written by A. Underdal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the major environmental challenges facing governments and societies today are collective problems, calling for joint solutions. However, even when effective solutions can be found only through joint efforts, international cooperation is often hard to establish and maintain. This makes it all the more important to understand the conditions for `success' and the causes of `failure'. This book examines some of the political mechanisms at work in the formation and operation of international environmental regimes. What are the major factors that shape the national positions that governments bring to the negotiating table? How do the international institutions and negotiation processes through which these preferences and positions are adjusted and aggregated affect outcomes? What are the main mechanisms determining whether or not international environmental agreements are successfully implemented at the domestic level? The Politics of International Environmental Management is published in cooperation with the European Science Foundation.

This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protection of the human environment and sustainable development of the world increasingly manifest themselves through negotiation and enforcement of internationally agreed legal rules and standards. International environmental negotiation has become a common format to design norms that affect national and international legal orders and influence the behavior of various stakeholders. Accordingly, international environmental negotiations attract multiple players: from sovereign States to environmental NGOs, to the business community and civil society. The growing complexity of international environmental negotiations demands, in order to make the process effective, a comprehensive and adequate preparation of all actors. The Environmental Negotiator Handbook is designed as a single volume tool that equips participants of international environmental negotiations with a structured description and analysis of the negotiating process. All stages of the development of international environmental agreements are carefully followed, researched, commented on and illustrated with multiple documentary examples. The book traces the process from the pre negotiation stage to actual implementation of the agreed regime. The book also includes a large collection of essential international texts to be at hand for representatives at international environmental negotiations. This volume is aimed at a wide range of readers, including government officials, staff of relevant intergovernmental organizations and secretariats, non governmental organizations, practicing lawyers and academic scholars. The book is based on thirty years of the author?s career in international environmental law.
