Book Dome Petroleum Ltd Contract 81 X 1054 Final Operations Report

Download or read book Dome Petroleum Ltd Contract 81 X 1054 Final Operations Report written by TCOM Corporation and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "TCOM leased to Dome a modified Small Tethered Aerostat Relocatable system (STARS) for operations in the Beaufort Sea. The purpose of this operation was to identify and track ice floes utilizing a Dome supplied Decca Radar. Radar information of the targeted ice floes was to be displaced at both the support vessel, the CANMAR TEAL, and the EXPLORER IV drill ship. The elevation of the radar system as accomplished through the use of an aerostat, expands the radar horizon far beyond that of a surface based system. Radar data are then transmitted from the aerostat to the support vessel and then relayed from the support vessel to the drill ship. To furnish a system capable of providing the desired radar coverage it was necessary to reconfigure the aerostat system for marine mooring, and to modify and integrate the Decca Radar into the TCOM system. The reconfiguration of the mooring system involved shipboard modifications to the CANMAR TEAL which was under construction at Allied Shipbuilders in Vancouver, British Columbia. These modifications included the addition of rails, gantry, power distribution, and hydraulic winches. On arrival to the Tuktoyaktuk Base additional modifications were required such as removal of the anchor winch, installation of the power enclosure, electronic enclosure, helium racks, radar display, and omni antenna. Also, an inflation pad and mooring system were developed and installed on the ARCTIC TARSIUT barge, and a remote radar display installed on the EXPLORER IV drill ship. Section 2 through 9 of this report define the various equipment configurations and their installation, Sections 10 through 13 provide details on the four operational tests. Section 14 describes the parameters analyzed and results of a computer simulation of the system, and Section 15 provides a proposal for an improved system as required in the contract. Rigorous total system analysis by both Dome and TCOM was followed by product design, hardware fabrication and testing, all aimed at enabling a successful operational demonstration of this Dome-TCOM system. A listing of the principal areas of investigation gives the reader a summary perspective of the total effort: 1. Operational climatology; 2. Marine environment; 3. Installation of an inflation pad and safe mooring haven for the aerostat on the ARCTIC TARSIUT barge. 4. Aerostat flight and mooring constraints associated with the pitch, heave and roll characteristics of the support vessel (the CANMAR TEAL); 5. Design and fabrication requirements necessary to allow 360° weather vaning of the aerostat while moored to the CANMAR TEAL; 6. Design and fabrication requirements of a Positive Aerostat Deflation System in compliance with Dome's safety requirements; 7. Flight and mooring requirements to enable compliance with the Ministry of Transport regulations; 8. Requirements for modification and integration of the Dome-supplied Decca Radar with the TCOM system; 9. Requirements for design of a communications link with the drill ship. The overall performance of each of these elements was equal to, or greater than, design specifications, and resulted in the successful completion of this project. For detailed performance analysis in each of these areas, see Sections 10, 11, 12, and 13. ... In general the Dome-TCOM system provided an excellent system for radar ice surveillance during the over 2500 nautical miles traversed throughout the operational phase of this contract. However, the aerostat as presently configured is not considered to be an arctic weatherized system, with the primary atmospheric limitation being icing which is inherent in the climatology of this operations area during the months of September and October"--Leaves 1-1-1-3 leaves.
