Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide for both fundamentals and real-world applications of environmental engineering Written by noted experts, Handbook of Environmental Engineering offers a comprehensive guide to environmental engineers who desire to contribute to mitigating problems, such as flooding, caused by extreme weather events, protecting populations in coastal areas threatened by rising sea levels, reducing illnesses caused by polluted air, soil, and water from improperly regulated industrial and transportation activities, promoting the safety of the food supply. Contributors not only cover such timely environmental topics related to soils, water, and air, minimizing pollution created by industrial plants and processes, and managing wastewater, hazardous, solid, and other industrial wastes, but also treat such vital topics as porous pavement design, aerosol measurements, noise pollution control, and industrial waste auditing. This important handbook: Enables environmental engineers to treat problems in systematic ways Discusses climate issues in ways useful for environmental engineers Covers up-to-date measurement techniques important in environmental engineering Reviews current developments in environmental law for environmental engineers Includes information on water quality and wastewater engineering Informs environmental engineers about methods of dealing with industrial and municipal waste, including hazardous waste Designed for use by practitioners, students, and researchers, Handbook of Environmental Engineering contains the most recent information to enable a clear understanding of major environmental issues.
Download or read book New Directions in Water Resources Planning for the U S Army Corps of Engineers written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-03-29 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has long been one of the federal government's key agencies in planning the uses of the nation's waterways and water resources. Though responsible for a range of water-related programs, the Corps's two traditional programs have been flood damage reduction and navigation enhancement. The water resource needs of the nation, however, have for decades been shifting away from engineered control of watersheds toward restoration of ecosystem services and natural hydrologic variability. In response to these shifting needs, legislation was enacted in 1990 which initiated the Corps's involvement in ecological restoration, which is now on par with the Corps's traditional flood damage reduction and navigation roles. This book provides an analysis of the Corps's efforts in ecological restoration, and provides broader recommendations on how the corps might streamline their planning process. It also assesses the impacts of federal legislation on the Corps planning and projects, and provides recommendations on how relevant federal policies might be altered in order to improve Corps planning. Another important shift affecting the Corps has been federal cost-sharing arrangements (enacted in 1986), mandating greater financial participation in Corps water projects by local co-sponsors. The book describes how this has affected the Corps-sponsor relationship, and comments upon how each group must adjust to new planning and political realities.

Download or read book Sustainability of Temperate Forests written by Roger A. Sedjo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RFF's Roger Sedjo and his colleagues discuss initiatives designed to promote and enhance sustainable forestry in temperate countries. While concerns about tropical deforestation are considerable, temperate forests account for the vast majority of the world's roundwood production and most global trade in wood and paper. Improving forest sustainability in such regions is imperative, economically and environmentally. This book illustrates how far nations have progressed, and how far they still need to go, in that effort. The authors describe how temperate nations address forest sustainability, discussing recent developments affecting forestry and trade. Their compilation of international data on forest practices and regulation provides a useful comparative perspective. They analyze the effect of institutional changes (e.g., new laws) on land management. The volume assesses how national forestry industries are adapting to new laws and policies in the face of new realities in production and markets, particularly in the context of international trade and global competition. Country profiles provide details on sustainability policy and performance in eight timber-exporting or major wood-using temperate nations: the United States, Canada, Finland, Sweden, Germany, France, New Zealand, and Chile. The authors also assess how each nation would be affected by the application of various criteria for sustainability.
Download or read book Globalization and International Organizations written by Edward Kwakwa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last few years have witnessed several significant developments in respect of international organizations, most of which are best encapsulated in the word "change". In particular, international organizations have moved from their traditional role of facilitator of the activities of their members, to that of director of their own activities. As a result, there is increased scrutiny over issues relating to the governance, control, accountability and the privileges and immunities of international organizations. These subjects are all the focus of this book. Edward Kwakwa has collected together the best published work by leading authorities in the field on subjects of crucial importance and relevance to international organizations, particularly in the context of today's ever-increasing globalization. This book is of interest to scholars and students of law, as well as government and non-government practitioners and international civil servants.
