Book The Heads of Religious Houses

Download or read book The Heads of Religious Houses written by David Knowles and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-08-09 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first of two volumes, now covering the heads of religious houses in England and Wales from the tenth-century reform to the death of Edward III, 940–1377. This first volume, by the great master of monastic history, Dom David Knowles, aided by Christopher Brooke and Vera London, was published first in 1972 and was quickly recognised as a major work of reference, noted for its mastery of accurate detail. It has now been brought up to date with substantial addenda and corrigenda by Christopher Brooke. The 1972 volume covers the period 940–1216, and comprises fully documented, critical lists of monastic superiors, with succinct biographical details. It is an essential foundation for all prosopographical study of the religious history of the period; and the precise chronology that it underpins is invaluable for dating innumerable undated documents. As such, the book is a fundamental tool of medieval research.

Book English Episcopal Acta 31 Ely 1109 1197

Download or read book English Episcopal Acta 31 Ely 1109 1197 written by Nicholas Karn and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-12-15 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 170 acta published in this volume provide one of the best records of the structuring of a new diocese and the establishment of a cathedral chapter. The diocese of Ely (comprising historic Cambridgeshire) was founded in 1109, and its first four bishops oversaw the elaboration of a system of local ecclesiastical government, and also the formulation of a settlement between themselves and the Benedictine monks of Ely, whose church became the cathedral. Two of the bishops also held high secular office - William de Longchamp was effective regent of England while King Richard I was on Crusade - and the acta issued in connection with these duties shed light on the delegation of royal power.

Book English Episcopal Acta 30 Carlisle 1133 1292

Download or read book English Episcopal Acta 30 Carlisle 1133 1292 written by David M. Smith and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-06-30 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The area comprising what became the counties of Cumberland and Westmorland was long disputed, both politically and ecclesiastically, between the English and Scottish kingdoms. The bishopric of Carlisle was the last see in England to be created before the Reformation changes of the 1540s. This latest volume in the English Episcopal Acta series brings together for the first time an edition of all the surviving charters issued by bishops of Carlisle from 1133 until the death of Bishop Ralph de Ireton in 1292. The extant charters provide great insights into the episcopal administration of this border bishopric for the first 150 years of the see's existence. The introduction provides an account of the diocese, the bishops and their households, discussion of the diplomatic aspects and style of the surviving charters and the episcopal seals. Offering fresh insights into this formative period of English history, this volume will be of interest to scholars and students of ecclesiastical, medieval and local history.

Book Gilbert of Sempringham and the Gilbertine Order C 1130 c 1300

Download or read book Gilbert of Sempringham and the Gilbertine Order C 1130 c 1300 written by Brian Golding and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full scholarly study since 1902 of the Gilbertine order and its founder, St. Gilbert of Sempringham. The Gilbertines were the only native English monastic order, and highly unusual in their provision for both nuns and canons. Brian Golding provides a detailed and comprehensive account of the history of the order from its mid-twelfth-century origins up to the early fourteenth century. He examines the life of St. Gilbert and sets it within the context of twelfth-century monastic reform. His detailed analysis of the economy of the Gilbertines reveals much about monastic revenue and organization, and about relations with the lay community. Golding shows that by 1300 the Gilbertine experiment was largely dead. The founding ideals of a structure in which men and women could live in harmony and order had given way to male domination and the marginalization of the nuns.

Book Wonderful to Behold

Download or read book Wonderful to Behold written by N. H. Bennett and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth and development of the Lincoln Record Society in its first hundred years highlights the contribution of such organisations to historical life. In 2010 the Lincoln Record Society celebrates its centenary with the publication of the hundredth volume in its distinguished series. Local record societies, financed almost entirely from the subscriptions of their members, have made an important contribution to the study of English history by making accessible in printed form some of the key archival materials relating to their areas. The story of the Lincoln society illustrates the struggles and triumphsof such an enterprise. Founded by Charles Wilmer Foster, a local clergyman of remarkable enthusiasm, the LRS set new standards of meticulous scholarship in the editing of its volumes. Its growing reputation is traced here througha rich archive of correspondence with eminent historians, among them Alexander Hamilton Thompson and Frank Stenton. The difficulties with which Kathleen Major, Canon Foster's successor, contended to keep the Society alive duringthe dark days of the Second World War are vividly described. The range of volumes published has continued to expand, from the staple cartularies and episcopal registers to more unusual sources, Quaker minutes, records ofCourts of Sewers and seventeenth-century port books. While many of the best-known publications have dealt with the medieval period, notably the magnificent Registrum Antiquissimum of Lincoln Cathedral, there have also beeneditions of eighteenth-century correspondence, twentieth-century diaries, and pioneering railway photographs of the late Victorian era. This story shows the Lincoln Record Society to be in good heart and ready to begin its secondcentury with confidence. Nicholas Bennett is currently Vice-Chancellor and Librarian of Lincoln Cathedral.
