El panfleto tuvo mucho éxito, y su autor fue admitido en los clubes y las sociedades más selectas de París. A pesar de ser sacerdote, optó por no sentarse con el clero en los Estados Generales y fue elegido como el último de los representantes del Tercer Estado por París. La presente edición ofrece una antología de los tres principales escritos de Emmanuel Sièyes sobre la Revolución francesa de 1789, ya mencionados, y de otros más, realizada por el catedrático Ramón Máiz, traductor y especialista de uno de los principales teóricos al mismo tiempo que actor de la Revolución francesa.

Book excerpt: A leading intellectual historian of Latin America here examines the changing political ideas of the Mexican intellectual and quasi-governmental elite during the period of ideological consensus from the victory of Benito Juárez of 1867 into the 1890s. Looking at Mexican political thought in a comparative Western context, Charles Hale fully describes how triumphant liberalism was transformed by its encounter with the philosophy of positivism. In so doing, he challenges the prevailing tendency to divide Mexican thought into liberal and positivist stages. The political impact of positivism in Mexico began in 1878, when the "new" or "conservative" liberals enunciated the doctrine of "scientific politics" in the newspaper La Libertad. Hale probes the intellectual origins of scientific politics in the ideas of Henri de Saint-Simon and Auguste Comte, and he discusses the contemporary models of the movement the conservative republics of France and Spain. Drawing on the debates between advocates of scientific politics and defenders of the Constitution of 1857 in its pure form, he argues that the La Libertad group of 1878 and their heirs, the Cientificos of 1893, were constitutionalists in the liberal tradition and not merely apologists for the authoritarian regime of Porfirio Díaz. Hale concludes by outlining the legacy of scientific politics for post-revolutionary Mexico, particularly in the present-day efforts to inject "democracy" into the political system. Dedicó toda su vida a la actividad de escritor, que se vio coronada por un gran éxito y le valió, entre otros honores, la concesión del título nobiliario de Sir en 1918. Pronto se hizo famoso con la publicación, en 1894, de El prisionero de Zenda, que gozó de un inmenso favor popular. Y pocas semanas después de la publicación de tal obra, Anthony Hope logró renovar su extraordinario éxito con The Dolly Dialogues Algunas de sus obras fueron llevadas al cine. Falleció en 1933.

Esta visión, auspiciada por los partidarios de la Contrarrevolución, posteriormente se ha hecho canónica al asentarse los principios proclamados por los revolucionarios franceses. Con la perspectiva de esta visión sesgada, los escritos referentes a la religión se ven como añadidos discordantes, explicándose por causas subjetivas los que se presentan como disarmonías. Frente a esta interpretación, la que el autor propone atiende a aspectos culturales, antes que a aspectos subjetivos. Rousseau es fruto de un momento de transición. Frente al XVIII como el siglo de la razón, el pueblo es eminentemente religioso. La opción de Rousseau por el sentimiento religioso es una opción epistemológica pero a su vez es una opción social, una opción por el pueblo llano, frente a la razón auspiciada por la élite. Rousseau propone una revolución moral presidida por esquemas religiosos, aunque esta religión tiene que adaptarse a los nuevos tiempos: la metafísica debe ceder ante lo terrenal, o la moral primar frente a lo teológico. La religión civil, como religión patriótica, es expresión de su deísmo en el ámbito político.

Book excerpt: Nationalism has played a uniquely powerful role in Argentine history, in large part due to the rise and enduring strength of two variants of anti-liberal nationalist thought: one left-wing and identifying with the “people” and the other right-wing and identifying with Argentina’s Catholic heritage. Although embracing very different political programs, the leaders of these two forms of nationalism shared the belief that the country’s nineteenth-century liberal elites had betrayed the country by seeking to impose an alien ideology at odds with the supposedly true nature of the Argentine people. The result, in their view, was an ongoing conflict between the “false Argentina” of the liberals and the “authentic”nation of true Argentines. Yet, despite their commonalities, scholarship has yet to pay significant attention to the interconnections between these two variants of Argentine nationalism. Jeane DeLaney rectifies this oversight with Identity and Nationalism in Modern Argentina. In this book, DeLaney explores the origins and development of Argentina’s two forms of nationalism by linking nationalist thought to ongoing debates over Argentine identity. Part I considers the period before 1930, examining the emergence and spread of new essentialist ideas of national identity during the age of mass immigration. Part II analyzes the rise of nationalist movements after 1930 by focusing on individuals who self-identified as nationalists. DeLaney connects the rise of Argentina’s anti-liberal nationalist movements to the shock of early twentieth-century immigration. She examines how pressures posed by the newcomers led to the weakening of the traditional ideal of Argentina as a civic community and the rise of new ethno-cultural understandings of national identity. Identity and Nationalism in Modern Argentina demonstrates that national identities are neither unitary nor immutable and that the ways in which citizens imagine their nation have crucial implications for how they perceive immigrants and whether they believe domestic minorities to be full-fledged members of the national community. Given the recent surge of anti-immigrant sentiment in Europe and the United States, this study will be of interest to scholars of nationalism, political science, Latin American political thought, and the contemporary history of Argentina.

It argues that modern notions of sovereignty in the Atlantic world have been unstable, contested, and equivocal from the start. It shows how much contemporary notions of sovereignty emerged in the Americas as a response to European imperial crises in the age of revolutions. Jeremy Adelman reveals how many modern-day uncertainties about property, citizenship, and human rights were forged in an epic contest over the very nature of state power in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Sovereignty and Revolution in the Iberian Atlantic offers a new understanding of Latin American and Atlantic history, one that blurs traditional distinctions between the "imperial" and the "colonial." It shows how the Spanish and Portuguese empires responded to the pressures of rival states and merchant capitalism in the eighteenth century. As empires adapted, the ties between colonies and mother countries transformed, recreating trans-Atlantic bonds of loyalty and interests. In the end, colonies repudiated their Iberian loyalties not so much because they sought independent nationhood. Rather, as European conflicts and revolutions swept across the Atlantic, empires were no longer viable models of sovereignty--and there was less to be loyal to. The Old Regimes collapsed before subjects began to imagine new ones in their place. The emergence of Latin American nations--indeed many of our contemporary notions of sovereignty--was the effect, and not the cause, of the breakdown of European empires.
