Book excerpt: Baroque Lorca: An Archaist Playwright for the New Stage defines Federico García Lorca’s trajectory in the theater as a lifelong search for an audience. It studies a wide range of dramatic writings that Lorca created for the theater, in direct response to the conditions of his contemporary industry, and situates the theory and praxis of his theatrical reform in dialogue with other modernist renovators of the stage. This book makes special emphasis on how Lorca engaged with the tradition of Spanish Baroque, in particular with Cervantes and Calderón, to break away from the conventions of the illusionist stage. The five chapters of the book analyze Lorca’s different attempts to change the dynamics of the Spanish stage from 1920 to his assassination in 1936: His initial incursions in the arenas of symbolist and historical drama (The Butterfly’s Evil Spell, Mariana Pineda); his interest in puppetry (The Billy-Club Puppets and In the Frame of Don Cristóbal) and the two ‘human’ farces The Shoemaker’s Prodigious Wife and The Love of Don Perlimplín and Belisa in the Garden; the central piece in his project of ‘impossible’ theater (The Public); his most explicitly political play, one that takes the violence to the spectators’ seats (The Dream of Life); and his three plays adopting, an altering, the contemporary formula of ‘rural drama’ (Blood Wedding, Yerma and The House of Bernarda Alba). Throughout the study, poetry and drawings from every period of Lorca's career are examined. Selected drawings are interpreted; next, poems contemporary to those drawings are analyzed in their light. In chapter 1, a common poetics is extracted from Lorca's comments about his drawings and writing and placed in the context of the literary and artistic movements of his day. The evolution of the literary criticism that examines Lorca's drawings is traced and reviewed. Lorca's texts are examined from varying perspectives in the chapters that follow. In chapter 2, drawings and poems from 1927 to 1928 are analyzed in light of Lorca's participations in artistic and literary movements during those years. Texts from each period of Lorca's work are read in chapter 3 in a study of Lorca's employment of space and his depiction of setting and subject in his drawings and poems. Such a chronological approach allows the reading of Lorca's texts to reveal the evolution of his aesthetics as well as to identify the imagery and techniques that remained consistent throughout his career.

But other aspects of Lorca's literary career are equally significant: the earlier theatrical pieces, which he had started writing by 1918, the bold, experimental, expressionist plays of 1930-31, and (the subject of this volume) the later poetry written as his powers as a dramatist matured in the 1930s. Professor Anderson's book is the first in any language to focus specifically on Lorca's poetic output from 1931 to 1936. It offers extensive, detailed analyses of all the poetry composed during that period: Diván del Tamarit with its Arab-Andalusian flavour and stylization, the Llanto por Ignacio Sánchez Mejías, a sustained lament on the death of a bullfighter friend, Seis poemas galegos, and Sonetos, love poetry echoing Petrarch, Shakespeare and Góngora - four collections equal or superior in quality, power and suggestiveness to Lorca's canonic poetical works. Adopting a literary-critical approach based on the close reading of individual texts, with relevant background information, Professor Anderson elaborates on the themes and techniques, imagery and symbolism, strengths and weaknesses, of each poem in the four collections. Thereby he can relate this corpus to the whole of Lorca's work, showing that it cannot be neatly categorized under any of the avant-garde "-isms" prevalent in the 1920s and 1930s. His arguments for a revised appraisal of Lorca's creative development lead to a compelling case for a re-evaluation of his "late poetry". An Appendix gives English translations of all the poems under discussion (other Spanish quotations are translated in the text), and there is a fifteen-page bibliography of primary and secondary material.
