Book The Language of the Atharva veda

Download or read book The Language of the Atharva veda written by Yajan Veer and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the Atharva-Veda by Roth and Whitney in 1856, it has been subjected to various types of studies- interpretative, historical, religious and cultural. But a comparative study embracing all the aspects of the language of the Atharva-Veda has so far remained untouched. The present work is a grammatical study of the language of the fourth Veda. Though mainly concerned with the Saunaka recenison of the Atharva-Veda, the author has also taken note of the linguistic peculiarities found in the paippalad recension. The authro has taken great pains to make a comprehensive and scholarly study of this important Hindu Scripture contributing in no small measure to the field of language and linguistics.

Book Atharva veda Sa hit

Download or read book Atharva veda Sa hit written by William Dwight Whitney and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 738 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atharva-veda means `the Veda of the Atharvan' or `the Knowledge of Magic Formulas'. The great importance of the Atharva-veda Samhita lies in the fact that it is an invaluable source of knowledge of popular belief as yet uninfluenced by ancient Indian priestly religion, of the faith in numberless spirits, imps, ghosts, and demons of every kind, and of the witchcraft, so eminently important to ethnology and for the history of religion. This work includes in the first place, critical notes upon the text, giving the various readings of the manuscripts; second, the readings of Paippalada of Kashmere version, furnished by the late Professor Roth; furhter, notice of the corresponding passages in all the other Vedic texts, with report of the various readings; the data of the Hindu scholiast respecting authorship, divinity, and metre of each verse; also references to the anciallary literature, especially to the well-edited Kausika and Vaitana Sutras, with account of the ritualistic use therein made of the hymns or parts of hymns, so far as this appears to cast any light upon their meaning; also, extracts from the printed commentary;p and finally, a simple literal translation with introduction and indices.

Book India As Seen In The Kuttanimata Of Damodara Gupta

Download or read book India As Seen In The Kuttanimata Of Damodara Gupta written by A.M. Shastri and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1996-12-31 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kuttani-mata of Damodaragupta is one of the few works in the history of classical Sanskrit literature the time and locale of the composition whereof can be ascertained with a fair degree of certainty. We learn from Kalhana that Damodaragupta occupied a high position under the Karkota-Naga king Jayapida Vinayaditya who ruled over Kashmir in the closing years of the eighth and early years of the ninth centuries A.D. A critical study of the internal evidence indicates that the work was probably composed a few years after the close of Jayapida's reign. As indicated by the title, the text aims at exposing the secrets of the whole craft of prostitution in the form of the advice of an experienced bawd (Kuttani) to a courtesan, and from this point of view it occupies a unique place in the whole range of Sanskrit literature; for the account is based not only on the standard erotic texts like Vatsyayana's Kama-sutra but draws copiously upon the poet's personal observation of the actual state of affairs obtaining in post-Jayapida Kashmir. But the poem has a much wider scope than its professed theme and covers the entire gamut of contemporary life of Kashmir in particular and northern India in general in all its varied aspects and as such forms an important source for the study of contemporary Indian society. The present work attempts a critical evaluation of this evidence in the light of relevant literary and archaeological data. In the process new light is thrown on several important questions.
