Book excerpt: Media coverage of the Danish cartoon crisis and the destruction of the Buddhas of Bamiyan left Westerners with a strong impression that Islam does not countenance depiction of religious imagery. Jamal J. Elias corrects this view by revealing the complexity of Islamic attitudes toward representational religious art. Aisha’s Cushion emphasizes Islam’s perceptual and intellectual modes and in so doing offers the reader both insight into Islamic visual culture and a unique way of seeing the world. Aisha’s Cushion evaluates the controversies surrounding blasphemy and iconoclasm by exploring Islamic societies at the time of Muhammad and the birth of Islam; during early contact between Arab Muslims and Byzantine Christians; in medieval Anatolia and India; and in modern times. Elias’s inquiry then goes further, to situate Islamic religious art in a global context. His comparisons with Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, and Hindu attitudes toward religious art show them to be as contradictory as those of Islam. Contemporary theories about art’s place in society inform Elias’s investigation of how religious objects have been understood across time and in different cultures. Book excerpt: In the absence of a tradition of self-portraiture, how could artists signal their presence within a painting? Centred on late Timurid manuscript painting (ca. 1470-1500), this book reveals that pictures could function as the painter's delegate, charged with the task of centring and defining artistic work, even as they did not represent the artist's likeness. Influenced by the culture of the majlis, an institutional gathering devoted to intricate literary performances and debates, late Timurid painters used a number of strategies to shift manuscript painting from an illustrative device to a self-reflective object, designed to highlight the artist's imagination and manual dexterity. These strategies include visual abundance, linear precision, the incorporation of inscriptions addressing aspects of the painting and the artist's signature. Focusing on one of the most iconic manuscripts of the Persianate tradition, the Cairo Bustan made in late Timurid Herat and bearing the signatures of the painter Bihzad, this book explores Persian manuscript painting as a medium for artistic performance and self-representation, a process by which artistic authority was shaped and discussed.

Book excerpt: In this dissertation, Islamic art is explored and defined by focusing on its unifying elements and features such as the use of geometrical patterns, arabesque, Arabic calligraphy, and secular figurative art. The mosque (masjid) as the place of worship for Muslims and a gallery for artistic contributions is also explored. Interior elements such as the prayer niche (mihrab) and the pulpit (minbar), and exterior elements such as the call-to-prayer tower (minaret) and the dome (qubba) are analyzed as unifying elements in Islamic art and architecture. These elements are examined through a study of the art and projects of Jamal Badran (1909-1999), a Palestinian artist who specialized in Arabic and Islamic ornamental art. Individual art pieces that Badran created using a variety of media and techniques are examined, many from the never-before-seen collection of his family. Jamal Badran's projects in mosques, including the interior decoration of the University of Jordan Mosque and his work in the Saladin Minbar of the Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, is also researched. This work is divided into eight chapters, covering an introduction to the life o Jamal Badran; the unity of Islamic art; and the art of Arabic calligraphy, its geometric principles, and how it is used as an art form and a unifying element in Islamic art. Through Badran's artwork, geometrical patterns, principles, and features are discussed, as are the elements of arabesque and figurative images in Islamic art. The mosque, its development, and its interior and exterior elements as used for artisctic expression are also discussed, with a variety of examples from Badran's work. The influence of Jamal Badran is discussed in depth includinga section on contemporary Isalmic art and the continuity of this cultural art form. A glossary of terms and a chart of historical and key dates in Islamic art are included as appendices, along with a list of Badran's exhibitions and awards, and a chronology of his life.
