Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fights and Adventures With the Indians: Thrilling Stories of an American Scout on the Western Plains in the Old Days To My Readers: This book consists of my travels and my experiences as a scout, with Colonel Miles, from the year 1872 until 1874. It was during these years that the Indians were giving the government most trouble. I will also say that this book is absolutely the truth. It contains no fiction, but is a straight forward history of my adventures. I, as a scout, was associated with William (Buffalo Bill), and Amous Chapman. These you have no doubt read a great deal after. After I was wounded in my last fight, with the Indians in Kansas, I was sent to Arizona, where I continued in the government service for several years. This story I will publish at a future date, providing it is the Lord's will. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Adventures with Indians and Game

Download or read book Adventures with Indians and Game written by William A Allen and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-02-16 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An adventure tale, historical memoir, and hunting journal in a single, enthralling narrative. At the tender age of seven, little William shot his first chipmunk and was “imbued with the spirit of sportsmanship.” In the following years of his colorful life, Allen wore many hats, living as a tracker, miner, blacksmith, gunsmith, prospector, freighter, and even dentist. Above all, however, was his passion for adventure, the hunt, and his dealings with Native Americans in the waning light of the late nineteenth century in Dakota Territory. A born observer, Allen describes a world that, by the time he wrote his book in 1903, no longer existed. Allen’s accounts of life in the frontier wilderness—hunting otters and grizzly bears, a secondhand reflection on the tragedy of the Battle of the Little Bighorn, witnessing a battle between a rattlesnake and an eagle, and brutal fights and lifelong friendships with Sioux and Crow Indians—reflect a lost era of romantic heroism, untouched nature, and early Western sentiments, both antiquated and modern, toward Native Americans. Not only the thrilling memoir of one man’s life, Adventures with Indians and Game is also a compendium of Western game—how to track, hunt, and kill for entertainment—in a time when hunting for pleasure, rather than food, in the West was a foreign concept. As a pioneer in the field of hunting as a sport in the West, Allen provides a significant historical account of the spirit that spearheaded it. A teetotaler and man of his word, Allen’s narrative voice is strong, straightforward, and immediate, even though he died in 1944. Adventures with Indians and Game is a true-life adventure tale and hunting journal that promises an enthralling and eye-opening read.

Being a Further Discussion of General Custer's Course in the Little Big Horn Campaign.* I. WHETHER General Custer did, or did not, obey General Terry's orders; whether these orders were, or were not, well considered, and such as could be carried out; whether, if General Custer did disobey General Terry's orders he was warranted in so doing by the circumstances in which he found himself, are questions of the deepest interest to the student of military matters and the historian thereof. I presume the problem they present will never be authoritatively settled, and that men will continue to differ upon these questions until the end of time. The matter has been discussed, pro and con, at great length on many occasions. A number of books and magazine articles have been written upon different phases of the situation. I have come to the conclusion indicated in my own article, as I said, against my wish. In view of his heroic death in the high places of the field, I would fain hold General Custer, for whom I have long cherished an admiration which I still retain, entirely innocent. I have only come to this conclusion after a rigid investigation including the careful weighing of such evidence as I could secure upon every point in question. This evidence consists, first, of a great variety of printed matter; second, of personal conversations with soldiers and military critics, which, as any record of it would necessarily be hearsay and secondhand, I have not set down hereafter save in one instance; third, of let * All notes in this appendix are signed by the initials of their writers to identify them.--C. Book My Sixty Years on the Plains

Download or read book My Sixty Years on the Plains written by William T. Hamilton and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-02-10 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these days, when the experience of living right up against nature are fast becoming a thing of the past, the story is of special interest. The mountaineers as a class were unique. Life itself had little value in their estimation. They were adventurous and fearless men, who pushed the boundaries of what it meant to be alive and thought nothing of laying down their lives in the service of a friend. Theirs was a brotherhood in which one man’s life was entirely at the service of any of its members, regardless of friendship or even of acquaintanceship. Often equipped with nothing but their skill and endurance, a horse, a gun or two, and enough provisions to see them until tomorrow, they set out to make their way through a vast wilderness that held all the terrors of the unknown. William "Bill" Hamilton recounts his life as a free trapper and mountain man in the last days of their remarkable time. Hamilton's writing is simple and straightforward, a mirror image of the man himself. If you want an excellent autobiography of a hard man who trapped the creeks and streams of the Far West, lived with and fought against Indians, helped settlers come West to make a new life, this is the book for you. Drop that paperback Western and pickup the real story—history with the bark still on it. Skyhorse Publishing, along with our Arcade, Good Books, Sports Publishing, and Yucca imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs. Book Indian Fights and Fighters 1904 by Cyrus Townsend Brady

Download or read book Indian Fights and Fighters 1904 by Cyrus Townsend Brady written by Cyrus Townsend Brady and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-04-13 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Indian Wars, or Indian Wars, were the multiple conflicts between American settlers or the United States government and the native peoples of North America from the time of earliest colonial settlement until 1924. In some cases, wars resulted from conflicts and competition for resources between the European colonists and Native Americans. There was population pressure as settlers expanded their territory, generally pushing indigenous people northward and westward. Warfare and raiding also took place as a result of wars between European powers; in North America, these enlisted their Native American allies to help them conduct warfare against each other's settlements. Many conflicts were local, involving disputes over land use, and some entailed cycles of reprisal. Particularly in later years, conflicts were spurred by ideologies such as Manifest Destiny, which held that the United States was destined to expand from coast to coast on the North American continent. In the 1830s, the United States had a policy of Indian removal east of the Mississippi River, which was a planned, large-scale removal of indigenous peoples from the areas where Europeans were settling. Particularly in the years leading up to Congressional passage of the related act, there was armed conflict between settlers and Native Americans; some removal was achieved through sale or exchange of territory through treaties.
