Book The Battles in Flanders From Ypres to Neuve Chapelle Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Battles in Flanders From Ypres to Neuve Chapelle Classic Reprint written by Edmund Dane and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-13 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Battles in Flanders, From Ypres to Neuve Chapelle Ever since the middle of November last there has been on the West front in the present war what many have called and considered a deadlock. In the account which follows of that part of the campaign represented by the battles in Flanders the true character of the great and brilliant military scheme by means of which, and against apparently impossible odds, the Allied com manders succeeded in reducing the main fighting forces of Germany to impotence, and in defeating the purposes of the invasion, will, I hope, become clear. The success or failure of that scheme depended upon the issue of the Battle of Ypres. Not only was that great battle the most pro longed, furious, and destructive clash of arms yet known, but upon it also, for reasons which in fact disclose the real history of this struggle, hung the issue of the War as a whole. N o accident merely of a despot's desires caused the fury and the terror of Ypres. It was the big bid of Prussian Militarism for supremacy. Equally in the ter rible and ghastly defeat it there sustained Prus sian Militarism faced its doom. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Standing by War Time Reflections in France and Flanders Classic Reprint

Download or read book Standing by War Time Reflections in France and Flanders Classic Reprint written by Robert Keable and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Standing by War-Time Reflections in France and Flanders Moreover, of course, this is to set aside the fact that no one, even in the regular Army itself, knew what this war would be like. It is one thing to belong to a regular army whether in peace Or in War, and quite another to be a unit in a nation mobilised from top to bottom all but irrespective even of sex. Besides, no living Englishman had experienced a Western European War unless as an isolated volunteer in 1870, and a soldier's life in a foreign civilised country was as strange as combat with highly trained conscript armies in the field itself. All this is upon the surface, but it might be supposed that the ground of such an experience had been fairly well covered by now. Our authors have revealed to us the making Of Kitchener's Army -it sounds quite far away now; every phase of life in the trenches, on the sea, and in the air even the experiences of and chaplains, the latter everywhere. I might well have asked myself where I came in. In fact, however, this book has been written without the posing of such a question at all. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian Front in France and Flanders IT has been said that there is a romance about a great battle separate altogether from its history and from its influence on the destinies of nations. Such romance must, and does, surely then attach to a great war which envisages countless engage ments, and instead of a Single picture is a troop ing panorama of life and death, light and shade. And no man to whom was granted the privilege of taking part in the conflict now ended, and having eyes to see and ears to hear, and the wit to understand a little of that which passed in review before him, can have emerged quick from such experiences without bearing about him in his soul, if not visibly, wisps of the trailing cloud of glory. The characters in this story are all drawn from imagination, but what they go through, their adventures and experiences, have nearly all been taken from the material collected by me. We did our parts, With willing hearts, While over the ocean blue; We ruined with fire, One great Empire, Now we've returned to you. We started no war, We fought only for Our rights - all which were due; There's no more land, Called "Fatherland," Now we've returned to you. With flag unfurled. To "Rule the world" Was ever the Kaiser's view; But in the grind, He changed his mind, Now we've returned to you. We fought with France, And every chance We had to cross the slough; We broke their line, They sought the Rhine, Now we've returned to you. Some few Brave sons, Repulsing the Huns, Met death - but brave and true. But all the rest, Have done our best, Now we've returned to you. For land that's free, For Victory - The Old Red, White and Blue; We fought our might, We won alright, Now we've returned to you. To All Army Officers. If I wear a helmit, A heavy steel helmit, And you wear your old Sam Browne. If you "Right dress me" With bricks I'll caress thee, When I'm back in my home town. No more a soldier, Then I will get bolder, No orders from such a clown, And when you re back with your Sally, Stay out of the alley, Or take off your old "Sam Browne." Book Canada in Flanders Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Canada in Flanders Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Max Aitken Beaverbrook and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-12 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada in Flanders, Vol. 2 The narrative of the Second Battle of Ypres was written on the spot and immediately after the action. It was not until long afterwards that it was possible to collect and collate the whole of the battalion diaries. The story, therefore, could only be compiled from the personal reports of the officers commanding units, and in some cases these were not avail able, and certain regiments did not therefore receive the prominence which was their due. These regiments will, I am sure, readily under stand that the omission was not intentional, but due to the impossibility of making sure of all the details of a great and confused action until months after the event. Although the material has become available, I have decided not to attempt to rewrite the story. It is, in its main features, absolutely accurate, and has the advantage which must belong to any narrative written within sound of the guns, and while the impressions of the battle field are still vivid to the mind. I am, in fact, afraid that any attempt on my part to reconstruct the narrative would spoil whatever merit it may possess. In the first place, it IS necessary, however, to make good some mistakes in the first volume which have been pointed out by persons who were engaged in various actions.vi canada IN flanders.
