This book was released on 1976-12-15 with total page 733 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the development of higher education in Canada, through a detailed description and analysis of what was being taught and of the research opportunities available to professors in the years from 1860 to 1960. Background is provided in the opening chapters of Part I, which outline the origins of post-secondary education in both French and English Canada from 1635 to 1860, and in the parallel chapters of Parts II to V which describe the establishment of new and the growth of existing institutions during the period 1861-90, 1891-1920, 1921-40, and 1941-60. The remaining chapters of each of the book's main divisions present an examination of the curricula in arts and science, professional education, and graduate studies in 1860, 1890, 1920, 1940, and 1960, as well as the conditions pertaining to scholarship and research in these years. The concluding chapter identifies the characteristics which differentiate Canadian higher education from that of other countries. The book includes a full bibliography, an extensive index, and statistical appendices providing data on enrolment and degrees granted. A History of Higher Education in Canada 1663-1960 will be the definitive work in its field, valuable both for the wealth of information and the historical insights it contains.

Download or read book A Bibliography of Higher Education in Canada Bibliographie de L Enseignement Sup rieur au Canada written by Robin S. Harris and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1960-12-15 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliography is the first of a series of studies about higher education in Canada sponsored by the committee on the History of Higher Education in Canada established by the National Conference of Canadian Universities. Among its nearly 4,000 entries are included the books, pamphlets, theses, dissertations, and articles in journals and magazines which supply the context and commentary on the history of Canadian higher education. Part I of the Bibliography provides the context; our universities do not exist in a vacuum—they are part of the economic, political, religious and social life of the community. Part I, therefore, includes a section on Canadian Culture, listing histories of Canada and its provinces, of its religious and social institutions, of its art, its economy, racial groups, relations with other countries. In order to study higher education in relation to other levels of education, another section lists works concerned with educational developments and problems at all levels. Part II lists the works bearing directly on higher education in Canada, and includes sections on History and Organization, Curriculum and Teaching, The Professor, The Student. Entries are arranged in chronological order in all sections in order to present the progressive development of each topic, and a full Index enables easy reference by author. No distinction has been drawn between English- and French-language publications: Chemistry and Chimie are one subject. The relative proportion of English and French entries in a section is often significant as indicating differences in the frequency and importance of particular fields of study in our colleges.

Download or read book The Americanization of the Apocalypse written by Donald Harman Akenson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-02-07 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early twentieth century, a new, American scripture appeared on the scene. It was the product of a school of theological thinking known as Dispensationalism, which offered a striking new way of reading the Bible, one that focused attention squarely on the end-times. That scripture, The Scofield Reference Bible, would become the ur-text of American apocalyptic evangelicalism. But while the Scofield took hold in the United States, the belief system from which it emerged, Dispensationalism, was not primarily a homegrown American phenomenon. In The Americanization of the Apocalypse: Creating America's Own Bible Donald Harman Akenson examines the creation and spread of Dispensationalism. The story is a transnational one: created in southern Ireland by evangelical Anglicans, who were terrified by the rise of Catholicism, then transferred to England, where it was expanded upon and next carried to British North America by "Brethren" missionaries and then subsequently embraced by American evangelicals. Akenson combines a respect for individual human agency with an equal recognition of the complex and persuasive ideational system that apocalyptic Dispensationalism presented. For believers, the system explained the world and its future. For the wider culture, the product of this rich evolution was a series of concepts that became part of the everyday vocabulary of American life: end-times, apocalypse, Second Coming, Rapture, and millennium. The Americanization of the Apocalypse is the first book to document, using direct archival evidence, the invention of the epochal Scofield Reference Bible, and thus the provenance of modern American evangelicalism.

Download or read book Sir Edmund Head written by Donald Gordon Grady Kerr and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1954-12-15 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century ago, in 1854, Sir Edmund Head became governor general of Canada. His earlier career as Oxford don, chief Poor Law commissioner during the "hungry forties," and lieutenant-governor of New Brunswick, had prepared him to succeed Lord Elgin in this senior post in the British colonial service. Combining the outlook and training of a scholar with a long administrative experience in difficult posts, Head had a clear insight into British North American problems, and was able to guide British and Canadian politicians toward their solution in the creation of the new Dominion of Canada. Later, as Governor of the Hudson's Bay Company, he carried negotiations for the transfer of the Company's territories to the verge of conclusion before his sudden death in 1868. Neglected until recently by Canadian historians, the significance of the work of one of Britain's greatest colonial administrators is only now beginning to be appreciated. Professor Kerr's biography creates a lively and convincing picture of Head and colonial life at a critical period. Based on careful research among the public documents of the period, and making use as well of Head's private letters to close friends in England and North America, it is the first full-scale treatment available of this philosophic and capable governor whose influence on Canadian national development was so important.
