Organized in seven chapters, This book is organized into seven chapters. The first contains a single essay introducing biodynamics as a personally held, practical idea. The second chapter comprises four papers describing what itmeans to live holistically: real food, self-sufficiency, and teaching. Chapter three explores what is involved in biodynamic plant production: pastoral methods, medicinal plants, marketing to the community through CSA, compost management and nutrient cycling, seed production, and production of grain and bread. Chapter four describes examples of infrastructure development: building a straw bale bunkhouse, two barns, awater catchment system, and a solar-powered irrigation system. Chapter five considers aspects of ecological livestock raising: the difference between industrial and holistic methods, biodynamic dairying, and bee management. Chapter six explores the economics of biodynamic management: the viability of small, self-sufficient farms, home food security, the economics of ecological stewardship, marketing a philosophy,and the question of retirement on the commons. The final chapter presents the biodynamic worldview and practice from opposing, but complementary, perspectives. The chapter explores qualitative science as modeled in the work of Goethe, and in the philosophical idea of teleology and its practical application to answer the question of how Spirit manifests in matter. The chapter also examines how quantitative science looks atenergy use embedded in farm production and presents two complementary reports on an on-farm research project to assess whether biodynamically managed systems producing their own inputs can be sustainable. Finally, the chapter glances at transformative changes required for U.S. agriculture to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
