Book French Paintings in The Metropolitan Museum of Art from the Early Eighteenth Century through the Revolution

Download or read book French Paintings in The Metropolitan Museum of Art from the Early Eighteenth Century through the Revolution written by Katharine Baetjer and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication catalogues The Met’s remarkable collection of eighteenth-century French paintings in the context of the powerful institutions that governed the visual arts of the time—the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, the Académie de France à Rome, and the Paris Salon. At the height of their authority during the eighteenth century, these institutions nurtured the talents of artists in all genres. The Met’s collection encompasses stunning examples of work by leading artists of the period, including Antoine Watteau (Mezzetin), Jean Siméon Chardin (The Silver Tureen), François Boucher (The Toilette of Venus), Joseph Siffred Duplessis (Benjamin Franklin), Jean-Baptiste Greuze (Broken Eggs), Hubert Robert (the Bagatelle decorations), Jacques Louis David (The Death of Socrates), the Van Blarenberghes (The Outer Port of Brest), and François Gérard (Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord). In the book’s introduction, author Katharine Baetjer provides a history of the Académie, its establishment, principles, and regulations, along with a discussion of the beginnings of public art discourse in France, taking us through the reforms unleashed by the Revolution. The consequent democratizing of the Salon, brought about by radicals under the leadership of Jacques Louis David, encouraged the formation of new publics with new tastes in subject matter and genres. The catalogue features 126 paintings by 50 artists. Each section includes a short biography of the artist and in-depth discussions of individual paintings incorporating the most up-to-date scholarship.

Book Art in France Classic Reprint

Download or read book Art in France Classic Reprint written by Louis Hourticq and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-04 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art in France Certain kindly disposed confreres who have taken an interest in the following work have asked me now and then whether I intended to deal with French Art in fifty volumes or fifty pages. I have written a good deal less and a good deal more - too much or too little, it may be objected. Compared with works which exhaust the material and those which condense it into a few drops Of elixir, this little book has but one merit - that of existing. For the art of our country has never been treated as a whole, save in treatises on universal art, where the French-chapters appear in their due order, or in general histories of France, where the names Of artists defile at the end of a volume, like baggage at the rear of a convoy. Why has it not been thought necessary to coiordinate these different chapters, as has been done so efficiently and so frequently in the history Of our politics and our literature? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Book Impressionism an Intimate View

Download or read book Impressionism an Intimate View written by Florence E. Coman and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The art of the Impressionists has enduring appeal. Exhibitions on impressionism and impressionist artists continue to draw large crowds. Yet very little has been published that focuses on the intimate nature of much of impressionist art.Presenting over fifty works by major artists such as Bonnard, Corot, Cezanne, Degas, Van Gogh, Matisse, Monet, Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec, and using the Ailsa Mellon Bruce Collection of small French paintings in the National Gallery of Art as its starting point, this beautifully illustrated new volume explores two important aspects of impressionism. First, it illustrates how artists like Monet, Pissarro, Degas, Cezanne, Sisley and Renoir sought to capture fleeting, everyday moments and objects that made up their own lives and those of the people around them: their immediate family, friends, servants and strangers. The scale and subject matter was in stark contrast to the paintings of the official Salon. In place of large-scale academic or neoclassical subjects the impressionists turned to self-portraits, flowers in a crystal vase, a view of dancers backstage, a sister at a window, or an interior just after dinner-works that were once highly personal and introverted, wistful and dreamlike, transient and intimate in scale. Moreover, the author shows how the painting of earlier realist and landscape artists such as Corot, Rousseau, Boudin and Manet was absorbed into the small-scale impressionist works of an emerging generation of aspiring artists that included Monet, Renoir, Morisot and Pissarro. This highlights the second important feature of impressionism - its central role within the development of later nineteenth-century French and European modern art. In an introductory essay and in thematic groupings of works the author shows how, when the first impressionist exhibition opened in April 1874, critics were shocked at the small scale,"unfinished" nature of the paintings with their unmixed pigments and broken brush work, more akin to oil sketches. By the time of the last impressionist exhibition in 1886 the concept of what constituted a finished work had changed. Smaller, sketchier painting was increasingly admired for its freshness and immediacy of expression, and impressionism had given way to a radical reinterpretation by a new generation of artists. These included post-impressionists such as Seurat, Gauguin, Van Gogh and Cezanne;Vuillard and other members of the Nabis inspired by Gaugin; and, at the outset of the twentieth century Matisse, Derain and Duffy, known as the "fauves" ('wild beasts'), creators of highly coloured and emphatical brushworked paintings.
