Book The History of the International Biometric Society

Download or read book The History of the International Biometric Society written by Lynne Billard and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-07-18 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Biometric Society (IBS) was formed at the First International Biometric Conference at Woods Hole on September 6, 1947. The History of the International Biometric Society presents a deep dive into the voluminous archival records, with primary focus on IBS’s first fifty years. It contains numerous photos and extracts from the archival materials, and features many photos of important leaders who served IBS across the decades. Features: Describes events leading up to and at Woods Hole on September 6, 1947 that led to the formation of IBS Outlines key markers that shaped IBS after the 1947 formation through to the modern day Describes the regional and national group structure, and the formation of regions and national groups Describes events surrounding the key scientific journal of IBS, Biometrics, including the transfer of ownership to IBS, content, editors, policies, management, and importance Describes the other key IBS publications – Biometric Bulletin, Journal of Agricultural Biological and Environmental Statistics, and regional publications Provides details of International Biometric Conferences and key early symposia Describes IBS constitution and by-laws processes, and the evolution of business arrangements Provides a record of international officers, including regional presidents, national group secretaries, journal editors, and the locations of meetings Includes a gallery of international Presidents, and a gallery of Secretaries and Treasurers The History of the International Biometric Society will appeal to anyone interested in the activities of our statistical and biometrical forebearers. The focus is on issues and events that engaged the attention of the officers of IBS. Some of these records are riveting, some entertaining, some intriguing, and some colorful. Some of the issues covered were difficult to handle, but even these often resulted in changes that benefited IBS.

Book Biometrics in a Data Driven World

Download or read book Biometrics in a Data Driven World written by Sinjini Mitra and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biometrics in a Data Driven World: Trends, Technologies, and Challenges aims to inform readers about the modern applications of biometrics in the context of a data-driven society, to familiarize them with the rich history of biometrics, and to provide them with a glimpse into the future of biometrics. The first section of the book discusses the fundamentals of biometrics and provides an overview of common biometric modalities, namely face, fingerprints, iris, and voice. It also discusses the history of the field, and provides an overview of emerging trends and opportunities. The second section of the book introduces readers to a wide range of biometric applications. The next part of the book is dedicated to the discussion of case studies of biometric modalities currently used on mobile applications. As smartphones and tablet computers are rapidly becoming the dominant consumer computer platforms, biometrics-based authentication is emerging as an integral part of protecting mobile devices against unauthorized access, while enabling new and highly popular applications, such as secure online payment authorization. The book concludes with a discussion of future trends and opportunities in the field of biometrics, which will pave the way for advancing research in the area of biometrics, and for the deployment of biometric technologies in real-world applications. The book is designed for individuals interested in exploring the contemporary applications of biometrics, from students to researchers and practitioners working in this field. Both undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in college-level security courses will also find this book to be an especially useful companion.

Book Cognitive Infocommunications Theory and Applications

Download or read book Cognitive Infocommunications Theory and Applications written by Ryszard Klempous and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-25 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book gathers the chapters of Cognitive InfoCommunication research relevant to a variety of application areas, including data visualization, emotion expression, brain-computer interfaces or speech technologies. It provides an overview of the kind of cognitive capabilities that are being analyzed and developed. Based on this common ground, it may become possible to see new opportunities for synergy among disciplines that were heretofore viewed as being separate. Cognitive InfoCommunication begins by modeling human cognitive states and aptitudes in order to better understand what the user of a system is capable of comprehending and doing. The patterns of exploration and the specific tools that are described can certainly be of interest and of great relevance for all researchers who focus on modeling human states and aptitudes. This innovative research area provides answers to the latest challenges in influence of cognitive states and aptitudes in order to facilitate learning or generally improve performance in certain cognitive tasks such as decision making. Some capabilities are purely human, while others are purely artificial, but in general this distinction is rarely clear-cut. Therefore, when discussing new human cognitive capabilities, the technological background which makes them possible cannot be neglected, and indeed often plays a central role. This book highlights the synergy between various fields that are perfectly fit under the umbrella of CogInfoCom and contribute to understanding and developing new, human-artificial intelligence hybrid capabilities. These, merged capabilities are currently appearing, and the importance of the role they play in everyday life are unique to the cognitive entity generation that is currently growing up.

Book Guide to Biometrics

  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-06-29
  • ISBN : 1475740360
  • Pages : 379 pages

Download or read book Guide to Biometrics written by Ruud M. Bolle and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting with fingerprints more than a hundred years ago, there has been ongoing research in biometrics. Within the last forty years face and speaker recognition have emerged as research topics. However, as recently as a decade ago, biometrics itself did not exist as an independent field. Each of the biometric-related topics grew out of different disciplines. For example, the study of fingerprints came from forensics and pattern recognition, speaker recognition evolved from signal processing, the beginnings of face recognition were in computer vision, and privacy concerns arose from the public policy arena. One of the challenges of any new field is to state what the core ideas are that define the field in order to provide a research agenda for the field and identify key research problems. Biometrics has been grappling with this challenge since the late 1990s. With the matu ration of biometrics, the separate biometrics areas are coalescing into the new discipline of biometrics. The establishment of biometrics as a recognized field of inquiry allows the research community to identify problems that are common to biometrics in general. It is this identification of common problems that will define biometrics as a field and allow for broad advancement.
