Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifteenth Annual Report of the City Government of the City of Nashua: For the Municipal Year 1867-8 Having received instructive suggestions from your Honorable Board, and numerous and urgent solicitations from many of the most influential citizens to thoroughly inspect the City, and remove all those causes which tend to promote the introduction and propagation of pestilential diseases, the Board of Health, in view of an expected visitation of cholera, deter mined on a more vigorous course of action than has usually been thought necessary in years past. Circulars Were therefore issued with orders in reference to local conditions and the duties of the people, with such sug gestions relative to sanitary means as were designed to commend these or ders to the good judgment of all interested. All parts of the City were then visited, and each officer took special supervision of his allotted district. It is proper and gratifying to say, that in a very large majority of cases, the orders were cheerfully complied with. In a few cases legal notice was necessary; some of these, however, were non-residents and not per sonally interested. The general health of the City for the past year has been comparatively good. There were a few cases of cholera, but they were not of a very malignant character. Typhoid fever and dysentery were less prevalent than usual, and it is reasonable to suppose that the observance of sanitary regulations had the effect to lessen the frequency, and mitigate the violence of those diseases.
