Book Field Test of a Foamed Polystyrene Board Expedient Road

Download or read book Field Test of a Foamed Polystyrene Board Expedient Road written by North Smith and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foamed polystyrene in board stock form was tested as an expedient surface insulation with XM-18 airfield landing mats as a trafficking surface. The insulation was placed on a frozen subgrade in two layers, making a total thickness of four in. The test section was constructed in May 1971 near Fairbanks, Alaska, at the USA CRREL Farmers Loop Road Facility. The section was trafficked with a load cart which applied a total wheel load of 26.2 kips on a C-130 main landing gear wheel having a tire inflation pressure of 80 psi. Four hundred passes of the load cart were made on the test section; the final level surveys showed a minimum of settlement and structural distress to the insulation boards. The maximum depth of thaw beneath the insulation did not exceed 20 in. during each of the summers of 1971 and 1972. This method of expedient road construction would provide satisfactory service throughout a summer thaw season and probably longer without deleterious effects on the subgrade and the adjacent environment.

Book Field Test of Monitoring of Urban Vehicle Operations Using Non instrusive Technologies

Download or read book Field Test of Monitoring of Urban Vehicle Operations Using Non instrusive Technologies written by Jim Kranig and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents the activities and results of a test of non- intrusive traffic detection technologies. Seventeen devices representing eight different technologies were evaluated in varying environmental and traffic conditions. The following technologies were tested: passive infrared, active infrared, magnetic, radar, doppler microwave, pulse ultrasonic, passive acoustic, and video. Testing was done at both freeway and intersection locations. Emphasis was placed on urban traffic conditions and locations that typify temporary counting locations. The evaluation also focused on the ease of system setup and use, general system reliability, and system flexibility.

Book A Field Test of Selected Insects and Pathogens for Control of Waterhyacinths

Download or read book A Field Test of Selected Insects and Pathogens for Control of Waterhyacinths written by Eugene E. Addor and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1975 growing season a field experiment was begun on Lake Concordia, La., to test the potential effectiveness of selected organisms as control agents against waterhyacinths, Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms. Floating frames, each approximately 2 m square, were anchored on the lake in open water and planted with locally growing waterhyacinths. Sixty of these frames (plots) were selected for treatment with various combinations of two insects (Arzama densa Walker and Neochetina eichhorniae Warner) and two fungi (Acremonium zonatum (Sawada) Gams and Cercospora rodmanii Conway) in a random block factorial arrangement with four replications per treatment, and four frames were designated as control (no-treatment) plots. All plots were weighed at 2-week intervals throughout the growing season, flowering stalks were counted, and plant heights were measured at each weighing date. Observations were also made on insect and pathogen populations on the plots during the season. Preliminary indications are that significant reductions in the growth rate or total accumulation of waterhyacinth mass in the test plots were not achieved by any of the treatment combinations during the first season's tests, but the potential for some of the treatments to effect the desired control began to emerge during the second year.

Book Preliminary Field Test of the Water Resources Assessment Methodology WRAM

Download or read book Preliminary Field Test of the Water Resources Assessment Methodology WRAM written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A preliminary field test was made of the Water Resources Assessment Methodology (WRAM). Intended for use by an interdisciplinary team, WRAM is a systematic approach to assessment of impacts and evaluation of alternatives for water resource programs and projects. This pilot field application of WRAM to the Tensas River Project in eastern Louisiana primarily used existing data. Background of the Tensas River Project is presented as well as a description of the study area and the flood-control alternatives under consideration by the U.S. Army Engineer District, Vicksburg. An interdisciplinary team was formed to conduct the field test. Assessment variables were selected and weighted relative to their importance in assessment and evaluation within each of the four accounts delineated by Principles and Standards: national economic development (NED), environmental quality (EQ), social well-being (SWB), and regional development (RD). The projected effects on each variable were then scaled across alternatives and the without-project condition.
