Book Light at the Edge of the Field

Download or read book Light at the Edge of the Field written by William Meissner and published by Stephen F. Austin University Press. This book was released on 2021-11 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Light at the Edge of the Field keeps readers wanting more as a pitcher's girlfriend confronts her lover, not about his obsession with baseball but about their relationship and future together. After watching a traveling African American baseball team, a father is forced to inform his innocent young son about small-town racism. An insightful, empathetic wife guides her husband through the most difficult challenge he will ever face in baseball: his own retirement from it. A disadvantaged, fleet-footed player in Mexico dreams of making it to the Major Leagues. Though he can catch pitches consistently for hours, a diligent catcher drops the ball in his relationship with his girlfriend. These are just a few of the compelling characters readers will discover as they step into the batter's box. This tour de force of baseball short stories reveals insights not only about the game of baseball, but the game of life. Meissner's previous baseball collection, Hitting into the Wind, was hailed as "A quiet masterpiece of baseball writing." As they round the bases, these new stories will follow in those footsteps. Like a baseball's cushioned cork core, the stories illuminate what's central to our lives--our dreams, both those that can be reached, and those which remain unreachable.

Book Atomic And Free Electrons In A Strong Light Field

Download or read book Atomic And Free Electrons In A Strong Light Field written by Mikhail V Fedorov and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-01-15 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents and describes a series of unusual and striking strong-field phenomena concerning atoms and free electrons. Some of these phenomena are: multiphoton stimulated bremsstrahlung, free-electron lasers, wave-packet physics, above-threshold ionization, and strong-field stabilization in Rydberg atoms. The theoretical foundations and causes of the phenomena are described in detail, with all the approximations and derivations discussed. All the known and relevant experiments are described too, and their results are compared with those of the existing theoretical models. An extensive general theoretical introduction gives a good basis for subsequent parts of the book and is an independent and self-sufficient description of the most efficient theoretical methods of the strong-field and multiphoton physics. This book can serve as a textbook for graduate students.

Book Ion acceleration and extreme light field generation based on ultra short and ultra intense lasers

Download or read book Ion acceleration and extreme light field generation based on ultra short and ultra intense lasers written by Liangliang Ji and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-01-23 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to the relativistic (laser intensity above 1018 W/cm2) laser-plasma interactions, which mainly concerns two important aspects: ion acceleration and extreme-light-field (ELF). Based on the ultra-intense and ultra–short CP lasers, this book proposes a new method that significantly improves the efficiency of heavy-ion acceleration, and deals with the critical thickness issues of light pressure acceleration. More importantly, a series of plasma approaches for producing ELFs, such as the relativistic single-cycle laser pulse, the intense broad-spectrum chirped laser pulse and the ultra-intense isolated attosecond (10-18s) pulse are introduced. This book illustrates that plasma not only affords a tremendous accelerating gradient for ion acceleration but also serves as a novel medium for ELF generation, and hence has the potential of plasma-based optics, which have a great advantage on the light intensity due to the absence of device damage threshold.

Book excerpt: Poetry. Literary Nonfiction. FIELD LIGHT, written as an extended, multi-sectioned poem that moves in and out of prose, is a personal and historical exploration of the Berkshires through poetry and prose. Physician-poet Owen Lewis becomes a figure in his own epic as he learns to see himself and the abounding history that lives in the towns of western Massachusetts. From the writers Hawthorne, Melville, nearby Stanley Kunitz, Chris Gilbert and others, to artists Daniel Chester French, his daughter Peggy Cresson and Norman Rockwell, from the young lawyer Theodor Sedgwick who undertook a trial in 1781 to free Elizabeth Mumbet ending slavery in Massachusetts, to civil rights champion W.E.B. Du Bois, to Arlo Guthrie, to physician Austen Riggs and his psychiatric hospital, to Gertrude Smith and the founding of Tanglewood, FIELD LIGHT investigates layered histories to create a compelling cultural, political and social narrative, with its cycles of privilege and racism, that continues to unfold. It is the story of finding one's voice amid many voices, and the importance of the community of voices.

Book Light on a Part of the Field

Download or read book Light on a Part of the Field written by Kevin Holowack and published by . This book was released on 2021-05 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his evocative debut novel, Light on a Part of the Field, Kevin Holowack introduces us to a family grappling with artistic ambition, mental illness, and rifts that may not be possible to mend. Set in B.C. and Alberta in the 1960s and 1970s, this is a novel of finely observed vignettes offering a refracted look at art and family in the Canadian West. A young artist, Ruth, and her obsessive husband are struck by lightning, an experience that throws their lives into a universe of intense beauty and angst. Years later, Ruth lives on a farm her husband bought before his mysterious disappearance, and she creates idyllic but unremarkable paintings to cope with her confusion and loss. Then, without warning, her eldest daughter Gayle is love-struck by a travelling stranger and runs off to Edmonton where she too must contend with poverty, sickness, and her father's upsetting legacy. Meanwhile, farm-bound Ruth becomes more frantic in her work and begins longing for human contact as her house and animals disintegrate around her. As Gayle and Ruth seek new ways of connecting in order to remedy their unsettling family legacy, they begin a complicated process of renewal and must decide whether they can reconcile despite all the pain they have caused one another.

Book Light Scattering Size Exclusion Chromatography and Asymmetric Flow Field Flow Fractionation

This book was released on 2011-04-20 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive, practical approach to three powerful methods of polymer analysis and characterization This book serves as a complete compendium of three important methods widely used for the characterization of synthetic and natural polymers—light scattering, size exclusion chromatography (SEC), and asymmetric flow field flow fractionation (A4F). Featuring numerous up-to-date examples of experimental results obtained by light scattering, SEC, and A4F measurements, Light Scattering, Size Exclusion Chromatography and Asymmetric Flow Field Flow Fractionation takes an all-in-one approach to deliver a complete and thorough explanation of the principles, theories, and instrumentation needed to characterize polymers from the viewpoint of their molar mass distribution, size, branching, and aggregation. This comprehensive resource: Is the only book gathering light scattering, size exclusion chromatography, and asymmetric flow field flow fractionation into a single text Systematically compares results of size exclusion chromatography with results of asymmetric flow field flow fractionation, and how these two methods complement each other Provides in-depth guidelines for reproducible and correct determination of molar mass and molecular size of polymers using SEC or A4F coupled with a multi-angle light scattering detector Offers a detailed overview of the methodology, detection, and characterization of polymer branching Light Scattering, Size Exclusion Chromatography and Asymmetric Flow Field Flow Fractionation should be of great interest to all those engaged in the polymer analysis and characterization in industrial and university research, as well as in manufacturing quality control laboratories. Both beginners and experienced can confidently rely on this volume to confirm their own understanding or to help interpret their results.
