Book Field Guide to the Sedges of the Pacific Northwest

Download or read book Field Guide to the Sedges of the Pacific Northwest written by Barbara L. Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Field Guide to the Sedges of the Pacific Northwest is an illustrated guide to all 163 species, subspecies, and varieties in the genus Carex that occur in Oregon and Washington. Most of these species are found throughout the Pacific Northwest and California. Sedges can be challenging to identify, with differences between species based on small, technical characters. This comprehensive guide contains identification keys, descriptions, more than 650 color photographs, and distribution maps for each species, providing users with helpful tools and tips for identifying the plants in this challenging group. Information about sedge ecology, habitat, management and restoration, ethnobotanical uses, and propagation enhances the guide's utility. The Field Guide provides an invaluable resource for botanists, land managers, restoration ecologists, and plant enthusiasts. And, as the genus Carex becomes increasingly important amongst landscapers, nurseries, and gardeners, the guide will serve as a handy tool for choosing Northwest natives for the garden. Book jacket.

Book Guide to Effective Monitoring of Aquatic and Riparian Resources

Download or read book Guide to Effective Monitoring of Aquatic and Riparian Resources written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This monitoring plan for aquatic and riparian resources was developed in response to monitoring needs addressed in the Biological Opinions for bull trout (U.S. Department of the Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service 1998) and steelhead (U.S. Department of Commerce, National Marine Fisheries Service). It provides a consistent framework for implementing the effectiveness monitoring of aquatic and riparian resources within the range of the Pacific Anadromous Fish Strategy (PACFISH) and the Inland Fish Strategy (INFISH). The primary objective is to evaluate the effect of land management activities on aquatic and riparian communities at multiple scales and to determine whether PACFISH/INFISH management practices are effective in maintaining or improving the structure and function of riparian and aquatic conditions at both the landscape and watershed scales on Federal lands throughout the upper Columbia River Basin. A list of attributes thought to be important in defining aquatic and riparian habitat conditions and their relationship with listed species were identified. The list of attributes was then translated into measurable criteria and compiled to form sampling protocols for both stream channel parameters (Part II) and vegetation parameters (Part III). These sampling methods were tested for variability, and the results are documented in two other publications "Testing Common Stream Sampling Methods for Broad-Scale, Long-Term Monitoring." (Archer and others 2004) and "The Repeatability of Riparian Vegetation Sampling Methods: How Useful Are These Techniques for Broad-Scale Monitoring?" (Coles-Ritchie and others, in preparation). "

Book ASSESSMENT OF WETLAND CONDITION AND WETLAND MAPPING ACCURACY IN UPPER BLACKS FORK AND SMITHS FORK UINTA MOUNTAINS UTAH

Download or read book ASSESSMENT OF WETLAND CONDITION AND WETLAND MAPPING ACCURACY IN UPPER BLACKS FORK AND SMITHS FORK UINTA MOUNTAINS UTAH written by Diane Menuz and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Utah Geological Survey surveyed 28 sites in 2014 to quantify the location and condition of wetlands on the north slope of the Uinta Mountains in the Upper Blacks Fork and Smiths Fork watersheds. The three project goals were to compare accuracy of different wetland mapping techniques, assess wetland condition at randomly selected field sites, and develop a landscape model to predict wetland condition. Field mapping resulted in 6.2% and 13.1% less wetland area than mapping conducted by the National Wetland Inventory and the U.S. Forest Service, respectively. Sites were at or near pristine condition based on most field measures, though sites did show evidence of disturbance from grazing and non-native plant species. Landscape model results indicate that sites further from roads, closer to trails, and within the wilderness boundary generally had healthier plant community composition measures. While wetlands in the study area are overall in good condition, we recommend follow-up work to better quantify the impact of livestock grazing on wetlands in the area using study sites with well-understood levels of grazing intensity.

Book The Midwestern Native Garden

Download or read book The Midwestern Native Garden written by Charlotte Adelman and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-21 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Midwestern gardeners and landscapers are becoming increasingly attracted to noninvasive regional native wildflowers and plants over popular nonnative species. The Midwestern Native Garden offers viable alternatives to both amateurs and professionals, whether they are considering adding a few native plants or intending to go native all the way. Native plants improve air and water quality, reduce use of pesticides, and provide vital food and reproductive sites to birds and butterflies, that nonnative plants cannot offer, helping bring back a healthy ecosystem. The authors provide a comprehensive selection of native alternatives that look similar or even identical to a range of nonnative ornamentals. These are native plants that are suitable for all garden styles, bloom during the same season, and have the same cultivation requirements as their nonnative counterparts. Plant entries are accompanied by nature notes setting out the specific birds and butterflies the native plants attract. The Midwestern Native Garden will be a welcome guide to gardeners whose styles range from formal to naturalistic but who want to create an authentic sense of place, with regional natives. The beauty, hardiness, and easy maintenance of native Midwestern plants will soon make them the new favorites.

Book Manual of Montana Vascular Plants

Download or read book Manual of Montana Vascular Plants written by Peter Lesica and published by . This book was released on 2022-08 with total page 794 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Montana is the fourth largest state in the United States. It includes portions of both the Northern Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains. Vegetation of Montana is diverse, due primarily to the size of the state as well as great topographic relief which provides strong variation in environmental factors. Montana has a relatively large flora for a northern continental region due to being at the intersection of the Cordilleran, Great Plains, and Boreal floristic provinces. This book is a comprehensive field guide to the more than 2,500 species of Montana's vascular plants. It contains descriptions as well as habitat and distribution information based on specimens housed at the state's two major herbaria. Portraits or illustrations of diagnostic structures are provided for nearly one-third of the species.
