Book Neem in Sustainable Agriculture

Download or read book Neem in Sustainable Agriculture written by S.S. Narwal and published by Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2003-06-11 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neem is a versatile tree of Indian origin. Since ancient times, its various plant parts have been used to control domestic insects, stored grain pests, crop pests and for human and livestock medicine. Recently, these properties have been attributed to hundreds of chemicals present in this Golden tree. Being a storehouse of chemicals, with multiple uses and adaptability to diverse habitats and climatic conditions, the developed countries have been shown keen interest in this tree. Besides, the present day pesticides and nitrogen fertilizers pose several problems viz., environmental pollution and related health hazards in human and livestock insects. While neem chemicals have shown potential as pesticides and as nitrification inhibitors and do not pose these problems, moreover, neemcake is used as manure. This book will be most useful to neem scientists working in agriculture and forestry and to environmental conscious farmers of developed countries and to the educated farmers of Third World countries intending to practice Sustainable Agriculture.

Book Insect Pests of Tropical Food Legumes

Download or read book Insect Pests of Tropical Food Legumes written by S. R. Singh and published by . This book was released on 1990-12-11 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work collates the information on the advances made in the control of pests of tropical food legumes, namely the cowpea, soybean, groundnut, pigeon pea and other beans. Contributors are entomologists from the IITA, the International Center of Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) and researchers working in Africa, Latin America and Asia. An introduction from the USDA covers the general morphology, ecosystems, regions, distributions and uses of the crops. Chapters discuss field and storage pests, examining the taxonomy, identification, biology and bionomics, geographical distribution, status, damage symptoms and control measures for each pest covered. Also features a chapter on virus vestors and transmission of viruses and suggests strategies for future control and management of insect pests.

Book Theory and Practice of Integrated Pest Management

Download or read book Theory and Practice of Integrated Pest Management written by Ramesh Arora and published by Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dominance of insects in the world fauna has made them the humanity's greatest rival for the world's food resources, both directly by eating the plants cultivated for food and indirectly as vectors of pathogens attacking these plants. Agricultural scientists and especially entomologists have strived hard to develop a diversity of cultural, mechanical, biological and chemical weapons during the last more than two centuries to gain dominance over insects. However, there is evidence that insect pest problems have escalated with an increasing cropping intensity and with the use of agrochemicals inherent in modern agriculture. Consequently, Indian plant protection scientists have intensified research on the development of pest management tactics and effective pest management systems have been designed for all the important crops in the country. This book, consisting of 29 chapters, draws together the diverse literature on the subject of insect pest management in agriculture and contains contributions written by scientists having extensive experience with insect pest problems in Indian agriculture. The first half of the book is devoted to the principles and components of pest management including factors affecting pest populations, construction of life tables, coevolution of insects and plants, pest forecasting, pesticides, IGRs, botanicals, entomopathogenic nematodes and molecular approaches, etc. The different tactics for the management of major insect pests of principal agricultural crops of India, viz. rice, maize, wheat, forage crops, cotton, sugarcane, vegetables, fruits, oilseeds, pulse crops, jute, mesta and tobacco have been discussed in the second half of the book. The book contains a wealth of information on all aspects of insect pest management in agriculture under Indian conditions and would prove indispensable for students, teachers and researchers in agricultural entomology in India and other Asian countries.
