Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The d104ile Fibers: Their Physical, Microscopical and Chemical Properties Since the last edition of this volume of ten years ago there has been so much new matter appearing in the field of textile fibers that the author has been under the necessity of entirely rewriting and rearranging the book. In the present edition, therefore, the reader will find that a great deal of new matter has been introduced and the general plan of the book has been readjusted to meet. The demands of a logical development of the subject. The field of textile chemistry and the processing of textile fibers has taken on new proportions during the past ten years. To mention only one branch of the subject, the artificial silk industry, for example, has expanded until at the present time more artificial silk is made than is obtained as a natural product from the silkworm. The use of merceri'sed cotton has become an established factor in the cotton industry and has become stabilised into a standard process. The World War caused much research into the possibilities of utilising other fibers than those normally employed, and we find a great variety of experimenting, such as in the spinning of the so - called staple fiber yarns. Some of these sporadic attempts have passed out with the necessity of their use, while others have shown themselves to be of sufficient worth to remain in the general body of textile products. The fact that several reprintings were called for in the third edition of this book has encouraged the author to feel that his attempt to bring together such a large mass of scientific and technical data concerning the textile fibers has been more or less appreciated by those interested in the fiber industries. He has scoured the literature of this country and Europe rather thoroughly in the search for information, and anything of interest or value he has not hesitated to take and has endeavored to fit it in its proper place in this volume. The patent literature has also been thoroughly digested, though it has been the author's experience that in this province great care must be exercised so as not to distort in one direction or the other the technical values in a patent. Book Natural Fibers in Nonwoven Manufacture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Natural Fibers in Nonwoven Manufacture Classic Reprint written by Clarence A. Moore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-30 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural Fibers in Nonwoven Manufacture Use of manmade fibers has weakened the competitive position of natural fibers in conventional textile production. As a result, cotton producers have an important stake in development of new sources of demand for natural fibers. Since the introduction of nonwovens in the thirties, and especially in the postwar era, the market for bonded fiber fabrics has increased rapidly. The new processes have brought increased efficiency in fabric manufacture by eliminating expensive spinning and weaving. Development of nonwoven fabrication has Opened a new market for great quantities of raw materials. If cotton captures a significant share of this market it has a potential for large growth in future sales. Nonwoven fabric production, defined broadly for this study (see p. L), exceeded 1 billion pounds in 1967. Bonded fiber fabrics made up 9.h percent of this total; felts and punched and needled materials, percent; and padding materials, percent. During the last decade, bonded fiber fabrics generated most of the enthusiasm about the dynamic and exciting potential of the nonwoven industry. Book Cotton and Other Vegetable Fibres

Download or read book Cotton and Other Vegetable Fibres written by Ernest Goulding and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton and Other Vegetable Fibres: Their Production Utilisation Among the industrial problems arising from the war, one of the most important is that of the future of our textile industries, especially in relation to the sources from which they derive their raw materials and the possibility of drawing these to a larger extent than was the case before the war from countries within the Empire. The subject is one that has engaged the close attention of the Imperial Institute for many years, during which it has investigated the possibilities of fibre production in all those British countries which seem to present chances of success. The Institute has given assistance, through experimental investigations conducted in its laboratories and through the supply of technical information, to Governments of the countries concerned, to producers overseas and to merchants and manufacturers at home. A very large amount of information has been collected on questions connected with the experimental production and value of fibres in various countries, much of which has been published in the "Bulletin of the Imperial Institute" and in special reports. In connection with cotton cultivation especially the work of the Imperial Institute has been continuous and has been conducted in intimate association with experimental cultivation overseas, and with the operations of the British Cotton Growing Association. In these subjects of cotton cultivation alone the Institute has issued a large number of special reports. The increased attention which must shortly be given to extending these sources of supply of cotton and other industrial fibres rendered it desirable that a general summary should be published of the position and prospects of the world's production and utilisation of fibres, and it has been therefore decided to issue the present volume in the Imperial Institute series of Handbooks to the Commercial Resources of the Tropics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fabric Analysis: Covering Wool, Worsted, Silk, Cotton, Artificial Silks, Etc; From Fiber to Finished Fabric The analysis of textile fabrics forms an interesting and at the same time most important subject for the designer, superintendent, manufacturer, the sales agent, as well as others connected with the textile industry. The object aimed at is to ascertain by experience, tests and calculations, full details as to the construction and characteristics of a fabric, cost of its production, etc., items which, if carefully solved, mean success. A complete fabric analysis comprises not only the pick ing out of the arrangement of interlacing warp and filling (the weave) but also ascertaining the nature of the materials the latter are composed of, their texture, quality, counts and twist of yarn used, weight of fabric per yard and amount for each different kind of yarn used in the con struction of the fabric; also the various processes commonly designated as dyeing and finishing the fabric has to be subjected to, to bring it into saleable condition for the market. This complete analysis referred to may not always be necessary, in fact the experienced designer, in his line of goods, may rely very frequently on his experience only having made similar fabrics before - and in most instances can tell at a glance the construction and average cost of fabric. Such men, however, are few, and again even such men will come in contact with fabrics not as well acquainted with; the mill may change on a different class of goods, again a designer may change his connection to a mill making a different class of goods he has been accustomed to, features which may compel him to make at least a part if not the complete analysis. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fibres Used in Textile and Allied Industries Mineral Fibres. - Apart from finely spun glass, slag wool, and the metal threads used for embroidery and similar purposes, the only representatives Of this group are the different varieties of asbestos. The fibres Of asbestos are relatively long and often Of ex treme fineness, and are very soft and lustrous, though lacking in strength. For Spinning or weaving they are usually mixed with a vegetable fibre which is subsequently removed by ignition. Asbestos consists in the main of magnesium silicate and calcium silicate, with smaller quantities of other constituents. Animal fibres.-the animal fibres used in the textile and allied industries are either hairs from various animals, or the silk produced by the silkworm and the larvae Of other moths. Most of. The hair fibres woven into textile materials are derived from sheep, goats and camels, though the hair of many other. Animals is also used to a limited extent. Animal fibres may be distinguished from vegetable fibres: both by their appearance under the microscope, and by their different chemical composition. Whereas vegetable fibres consist principally of cellulose or a compound Of cellulose, animal fibres are composed in the main2 fibres used IN textile and allied industries. Of protein substances (which in the case of wool contain sulphur). Hence, on igniting the fibres they curl up and emit an Odour of burnt horn quite distinct from the odour Of burnt Wood given OH by burning vegetable fibres. Various chemical methods Of distinguishing between animal and vegetable fibres are described under the Sections dealing With wool, silk and cotton. For the differentiation Of the various animal fibres from one another reliance must be placed chiefly upon, the microscope.
