Book Iranica in the Achaemenid Period ca 550 330 B C

Download or read book Iranica in the Achaemenid Period ca 550 330 B C written by Jan Tavernier and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 926 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book collects and discusses the Old Iranian divine names, personal names, geographical names (toponyms, hydronyms and oronyms) and loanwords, which are attested in texts written in Aramaic, Babylonian, Egyptian, Elamite, Lycian, Lydian and Phrygian. The texts, both royal inscriptions and documentary texts, are discovered in the entire territory of the Achaemenid Empire (from Egypt to Bactria), which controlled the Ancient Near East from ca. 550 to 331 B.C. The Iranica discussed in this book are divided into four categories: (1) directly transmitted Iranica, (2) semi-directly transmitted Iranica, (3) foreign Iranica and (4) indirectly transmitted Iranica (the so-called "Altiranische Nebenuberlieferung"). All expressions, which do not belong to one of these categories, are brought together in a section called "Incerta". The etymology and linguistic setting of each Iranian expression is studied and a list of occurrences is added to this analysis.

Download or read book Hermetica written by Brian P. Copenhaver and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-10-12 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hermetica are a body of theological-philosophical texts written in late antiquity, but long believed to be much older. Their supposed author, Hermes Trismegistus, was thought to be a contemporary of Moses, and the Hermetic philosophy was regarded as an ancient theology, parallel to the received wisdom of the Bible. This first English translation based on reliable texts, together with Brian P. Copenhaver's comprehensive introduction, provide an indispensable resource to scholars in ancient philosophy and religion, early Christianity, Renaissance literature, and history, the history of science, and the occultist tradition in which the Hermetica have become canonical texts.

Book The History of the Theory of Structures

Download or read book The History of the Theory of Structures written by Karl-Eugen Kurrer and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-01-09 with total page 864 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the evolution of theory of structures and strength of materials - the development of the geometrical thinking of the Renaissance to become the fundamental engineering science discipline rooted in classical mechanics. Starting with the strength experiments of Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo, the author examines the emergence of individual structural analysis methods and their formation into theory of structures in the 19th century. For the first time, a book of this kind outlines the development from classical theory of structures to the structural mechanics and computational mechanics of the 20th century. In doing so, the author has managed to bring alive the differences between the players with respect to their engineering and scientific profiles and personalities, and to create an understanding for the social context. Brief insights into common methods of analysis, backed up by historical details, help the reader gain an understanding of the history of structural mechanics from the standpoint of modern engineering practice. A total of 175 brief biographies of important personalities in civil and structural engineering as well as structural mechanics plus an extensive bibliography round off this work.

Book excerpt: For the first time, this work treats in a comprehensive manner the Rasn Yast, or 'Hymn to Justice'. The Rasn Yast stands in praise of the Zoroastrian deity Rasnu 'Justice' and belongs to the group of religious texts known as the Avesta - a collection of compositions in the ancient Iranian language of Avestan. Although the Rasn Yast, like all of the Avesta, is generally assumed to have been committed to writing either during or shortly after the Sasanian era (224-651 CE.), its verses were probably composed during the early first millennium BCE. The present monograph contains an English translation of the Rasn Yast supported by a critical edition of the Avestan text. The latter is based on the testimony of thirteen manuscripts, of which nine were newly collated. Variant readings from the manuscripts are recorded in a detailed and easy to read apparatus. Matters of a philological or text critical nature are taken up for discussion in an accompanying commentary and all forms appearing in the Rasn Yast are parsed in the text's glossary. In addition, this book includes three introductory chapters that aim to elucidate the key themes of the Rasn Yast. The first chapter concerns the titular divinity Rasnu and explores his role as a judicial figure, both in this world and the hereafter. The second chapter explicates the cosmographic scheme which is uniquely preserved in the Hymn to Justice and argues this map of the universe encodes numerical and spatial patterns. The third chapter draws upon Avestan and Middle Persian sources to give an in depth account of the use of ordeal rituals in ancient Iran - a practice with which Rasnu is intimately associated and which is repeatedly mentioned in the Rasn Yast. This work is intended for specialist and more general audiences alike, and is principally aimed at those with interests in Indo-Iranian philology, Zoroastrianism, ancient Iran and comparative religion.

Book Red Vienna

  • Pages : 296 pages

Download or read book Red Vienna written by Helmut Gruber and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1991 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1919 to 1934, the Socialist government in Vienna sought to create a comprehensive working-class culture, striving to provide a foretaste of the socialist utopia in the present. In Red Vienna, Gruber critically examines the impact of this experiment in all areas of life, from massive public housing projects and health and education programs to socialist parades, festivals, and sporting events designed to create a "new" working class. The Socialist program faced enormous obstacles, arising from the exaggerated expectations of the socialist leaders and their conventional cultural vision, from the resistance of workers, and from the competition of commercial and mass culture. Gruber then evaluates the limited and partial success of the Viennese "model" -- clearly the most comprehensive in the West and a democratic alternative to the Bolsheviks' experiment in Soviet Russia -- to pose general questions about attempts to fashion culture from above.

Book Heisenberg in the Atomic Age

Download or read book Heisenberg in the Atomic Age written by Cathryn Carson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-11 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of the Second World War opened a new era for science in public life. Heisenberg in the Atomic Age explores the transformations of science's public presence in the postwar Federal Republic of Germany. It shows how Heisenberg's philosophical commentaries, circulating in the mass media, secured his role as science's public philosopher, and it reflects on his policy engagements and public political stands, which helped redefine the relationship between science and the state. With deep archival grounding, the book tracks Heisenberg's interactions with intellectuals from Heidegger to Habermas and political leaders from Adenauer to Brandt. It also traces his evolving statements about his wartime research on nuclear fission for the National Socialist regime. Working between the history of science and German history, the book's central theme is the place of scientific rationality in public life - after the atomic bomb, in the wake of the Third Reich.
