Book Traditional Chinese Folk Customs

Download or read book Traditional Chinese Folk Customs written by Zhengming Du and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Traditional Chinese Folk Customs provides the reader with a kaleidoscopic view of social and cultural phenomena in various different areas and ethnic communities in China, in both ancient times and the present. Although the extent to which such old customs are still prevalent in Chinese society today varies, these traditions have had an undeniable impact on the contemporary Chinese way of life. Furthermore, given the growing consciousness of the importance of protecting traditional cultures, a number of folk customs that had once fallen to the verge of extinction are now being recovered, while others are still often found in Chinese literary works even if they have fallen out of common usage. As such, this book offers interesting insights into an often overlooked aspect of Chinese culture"--Provided by publisher.

Book Got a Revolution

Download or read book Got a Revolution written by Jeff Tamarkin and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-05-07 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most successful and influential rock band to emerge from San Francisco during the 1960s, Jefferson Airplane created the sound of a generation. Their smash hits "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit" virtually invented the era's signature pulsating psychedelic music and, during one of the most tumultuous times in American history, came to personify the decade's radical counterculture. In this groundbreaking biography of the band, veteran music writer and historian Jeff Tamarkin produces a portrait of the band like none that has come before it. Having worked closely with Jefferson Airplane for more than a decade, Tamarkin had unprecedented access to the band members, their families, friends, lovers, crew members, fellow musicians, cultural luminaries, even the highest-ranking politicians of the time. More than just a definitive history, Got a Revolution! is a rock legend unto itself. Jann Wenner, editor-in-chief and publisher of Rolling Stone, wrote, "The classic [Jefferson] Airplane lineup were both architects and messengers of a psychedelic age, a liberation of mind and body that profoundly changed American art, politics, and spirituality. It was a renaissance that could only have been born in San Francisco, and the Airplane, more than any other band in town, spread the good news nationwide."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August of 1969, a dairy farm in the state of New York hosted a pivotal moment in the history of pop music. Taking place only two years after the “Summer of Love” and one year after the tumultuous events of 1968, the Woodstock Music and Art Fair put an exclamation point on the transformational decade of the 1960s. Joni Mitchell did not attend Woodstock, but her song of the same name captures an opposition inherent to the turbulent and divisive era. “We are stardust . . . caught in the devil’s bargain,” Mitchell sings, “and we’ve got to get ourselves back to the garden.” In order to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Woodstock, Berklee College of Music hosted a week-long celebration that included conversations with luminaries from the era. Participants included Woodstock co-founder, Michael Lang; emcee, stage and lighting designer, Chip Monck; audio engineer, Bill Hanley; photographers Henry Diltz and Elliott Landy; public relations officer, Rona Elliot; and Gerardo Velez, drummer for Jimi Hendrix. Woodstock Then and Now commemorates the discussion between these Woodstock luminaries, making available the transcripts of this historic event.

Book White Utopias

    Book Details:
  • Author : Amanda J. Lucia
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2020
  • ISBN : 0520376943
  • Pages : 319 pages

Download or read book White Utopias written by Amanda J. Lucia and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transformational festivals, from Burning Man to Lightning in a Bottle, Bhakti Fest, and Wanderlust, are massive events that attract thousands of participants to sites around the world. In this groundbreaking book, Amanda J. Lucia shows how these festivals operate as religious institutions for "spiritual, but not religious" (SBNR) communities. Whereas previous research into SBNR practices and New Age religion has not addressed the predominantly white makeup of these communities, White Utopias examines the complicated, often contradictory relationships with race at these events, presenting an engrossing ethnography of SBNR practices. Lucia contends that participants create temporary utopias through their shared commitments to spiritual growth and human connection. But they also participate in religious exoticism by adopting Indigenous and Indic spiritualities, a practice that ultimately renders them exclusive, white utopias. Focusing on yoga's role in disseminating SBNR values, Lucia offers new ways of comprehending transformational festivals as significant cultural phenomena.
