Download or read book Fertilization and Thinning Effects on a Douglas fir Ecosystem at Shawnigan Lake written by Stephen A. Y. Omule and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall objective of the Shawnigan Lake Project (SLP), which was initiated in 1970, is to study the mechanisms of response to thinning and fertilization. The SLP study is composed of two components: a) the main experiment, and b) subsidiary studies. The main experiment, established in 1971--1972 (36 plots), investigated the effects of thinning and fertilization, and consisted of three levels of thinning and five levels of fertilization, including controls. This report focuses on the main experiment and the 32-year growth response for selected stand attributes. Report sections cover the experiment's study area and experimental design; database description; analysis methods outline; study results; and conclusions based on the experiment and results.--Includes text from document.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the interactions between nitrogen and the ecosystem and discusses nitrogen fertilization practices around the world. Simulation models that play an important role in determining the dynamics of source-sink relationships are presented, helping to pinpoint inefficiencies and develop strategies to synchronize nitrogen supply and demand.

This book was released on 2024-03-27 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compensatory growth (CG) is defined as a change in growth rate (usually positive) following a period of reduced biomass or slowed growth due to some perturbation (e.g. nutrient deprivation, parasite load, tissue damage, or natural/anthropogenic disturbance). The phenomenon occurs throughout the plant and animal kingdoms, and while it is primarily observed in species with short lifespans, it has also been detected in longer-living organisms such as trees. CG occurs at the individual level as a variable life history trait but has the potential to impact the performance of whole populations and communities.

Download or read book Forest Growth and Timber Quality Crown Models and Simulation Methods for Sustainable Forest Management written by Dennis P. Dykstra and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the relationships between forest management activities and timber quality. Sessions were organized to explore models and simulation methodologies that contribute to an understanding of tree development over time and the ways that management and harvesting activities can influence the quality of timber products recovered from those trees. Five keynote addresses, 29 plenary presentations, and 16 poster presentations covered the full breadth of forest growth and timber quality issues related to forest management. These proceedings comprise 19 papers based on presentations and posters, plus 28 abstracts for presentations. Also includes abstracts and slides from the presentations prepared by three keynote speakers. Illustrations.
