Book The Effects of Family Planning Programs on Fertility in the Developing World

Download or read book The Effects of Family Planning Programs on Fertility in the Developing World written by Nancy Birdsall and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper addresses the key elements and changes in population policies and programs, including the strength of program effort, from 1972 to 1982. Using a new scale with thirty items to measure family planning program effort, the presentation is based on an analysis of over 300 questionnaires received from ninety-three countries. Attention is given to measurement problems and change in program effort 1972-82 (including findings by country and regional differences). This study shows that a great deal of family planning program effort exists in a small number of countries; moderate effort occurs in a larger number of countries; and weak or very little effort is found in an even greater number of countries, including many in the Middle East, North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. Concerning change over time, between 1972 and 1982, there was a modest increase in program effort in more than half of the nearly 100 countries studied and a substantial increase in program effort in more than a third.

Book Women and Fertility in Bangladesh

Download or read book Women and Fertility in Bangladesh written by Alia Ahmad and published by SAGE Publications Pvt. Limited. This book was released on 1991-09-11 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The women who need effective birth control most are often the ones who find modern contraceptives unaffordable. So goes the cruel catch-22 affecting many of India's poorer women. Concisely and competently, Alia Ahmad sheds light on the links between the insecure socio-economic status of women and their fertility behavior. Women and Fertility in Bangladesh uses Bangladesh as a case study for analyzing this link--and what can be done to improve the status of women in India. Enlightening and thought provoking, Women and Fertility in Bangladesh is clearly written and quite accessible. Alia Ahmad's study will be required reading for anyone interested in gender studies, population studies, sociology, and economics. "The book is not only a good source of information in theoretical linkages between women's status and fertility but also provides some evidence on the related issues in the context of Bangladeshi society."
