Book excerpt: The original work presented in this thesis constitutes an important contribution to modern Cosmic Ray (CR) physics, and comes during one of the most exciting periods of this field. The first part introduces a new numerical code (DRAGON) to model the CR propagation in our Galaxy. The code is then used to perform a combined analysis of CR data, making it possible to determine their propagation properties with unprecedented accuracy. The second part is dedicated to a theoretical interpretation of the recent crucial experimental results on cosmic electron and positron spectra (PAMELA, Fermi-LAT experiments). Using the tools developed in the first part of the thesis, the author convincingly argues for the existence of a new spectral component, which could arise either from local astrophysical sources, such as pulsars, or from Dark Matter annihilation or decay. This thesis is a highly advanced work; the methods, analysis and results are clearly and carefully presented. This work is set to become an important reference document for any future work in this area.

Book excerpt: Galactic diffuse gamma-ray emission is produced by interactions of cosmic rays with interstellar gas and low-energy radiation fields is the brightest component of the high-energy gamma-ray sky, surveyed since 2008 with unprecedented sensitivity and angular resolution by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Galactic diffuse emission constitutes not on bright and structured background which needs to be modeled in order to study individual sources and fainter diffuse components, but it can be used also as a probe of the interstellar environment of the Milky Way. We present in-depth studies of LAT g-ray observations of selected regions in the local and outer Galaxy. LAT data are compared v multiwavelength tracers of the interstellar medium, including radio/mm-wave lines of gas and infrared emission/extinction from dust On one hand, we discuss the constraints provided by the gamma-ray data on the census of the interstellar gas. We determine the ratio X(CO)=N(H2)/W(CO) for several clouds and we also find evidence for an ubiquitous dark phase of interstellar gas which does not shine; at other wavelengths. On the other hand, we use the emissivity per hydrogen atom to infer the distribution of cosmic rays in distant locations not accessible by direct measurements. A remarkably hard and extended excess of gamma-rays is detected in the innermost 100 pc of the massive-star forming region in Cygnus.

In many models, dark matter annihilation or decay produces gamma rays. There are a variety of instruments observing the gamma-ray sky from tens of MeV to hundreds of TeV. Some make deep, focused observations of small regions, while others provide coverage of the entire sky. Book excerpt: We report on the first Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) measurements of the so-called 'extra-galactic' diffuse [gamma]-ray emission (EGB). This component of the diffuse [gamma]-ray emission is generally considered to have an isotropic or nearly isotropic distribution on the sky with diverse contributions discussed in the literature. The derivation of the EGB is based on detailed modelling of the bright foreground diffuse Galactic [gamma]-ray emission (DGE), the detected LAT sources and the solar [gamma]-ray emission. We find the spectrum of the EGB is consistent with a power law with differential spectral index [gamma] = 2.41 ± 0.05 and intensity, I(> 100 MeV) = (1.03 ± 0.17) x 10−5 cm−2 s−1 sr−1, where the error is systematics dominated. Our EGB spectrum is featureless, less intense, and softer than that derived from EGRET data.

These measurements yielded H"6.4 x 106 photons with energies> 100 MeV and H"250 hours total livetime for the highest quality data selection. This allows the study of the spatial and spectral distributions of these photons with unprecedented detail. The spectrum of the emission - often referred to as Earth albedo gamma-ray emission - has a power-law shape up to 500 GeV with spectral index? = 2.79 ± 0.06.

Book excerpt: The Large Area Telescope (Fermi/LAT, hereafter LAT), the primary instrument on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi) mission, is an imaging, wide field-of-view (FoV), high-energy [gamma]-ray telescope, covering the energy range from below 20 MeV to more than 300 GeV. The LAT was built by an international collaboration with contributions from space agencies, high-energy particle physics institutes, and universities in France, Italy, Japan, Sweden, and the United States. This paper describes the LAT, its preflight expected performance, and summarizes the key science objectives that will be addressed. On-orbit performance will be presented in detail in a subsequent paper. The LAT is a pair-conversion telescope with a precision tracker and calorimeter, each consisting of a 4 x 4 array of 16 modules, a segmented anticoincidence detector that covers the tracker array, and a programmable trigger and data acquisition system. Each tracker module has a vertical stack of 18 (x, y) tracking planes, including two layers (x and y) of single-sided silicon strip detectors and high-Z converter material (tungsten) per tray. Every calorimeter module has 96 CsI(Tl) crystals, arranged in an eight-layer hodoscopic configuration with a total depth of 8.6 radiation lengths, giving both longitudinal and transverse information about the energy deposition pattern. The calorimeter's depth and segmentation enable the high-energy reach of the LAT and contribute significantly to background rejection. The aspect ratio of the tracker (height/width) is 0.4, allowing a large FoV (2.4 sr) and ensuring that most pair-conversion showers initiated in the tracker will pass into the calorimeter for energy measurement. Data obtained with the LAT are intended to (1) permit rapid notification of high-energy [gamma]-ray bursts and transients and facilitate monitoring of variable sources, (2) yield an extensive catalog of several thousand high-energy sources obtained from an all-sky survey, (3) measure spectra from 20 MeV to more than 50 GeV for several hundred sources, (4) localize point sources to 0.3-2 arcmin, (5) map and obtain spectra of extended sources such as SNRs, molecular clouds, and nearby galaxies, (6) measure the diffuse isotropic [gamma]-ray background up to TeV energies, and (7) explore the discovery space for dark matter.

Book excerpt: The work presented in this book is a major step towards understanding and eventually suppressing background in the direct search for dark matter particles scattering off germanium detectors. Although the flux of cosmic muons is reduced by many orders of magnitude in underground laboratories, the remaining energetic muons induce neutrons through various processes, neutrons that can potentially mimic a dark matter signal. This thesis describes the measurement of muon-induced neutrons over more than 3 years in the Modane underground laboratory. The data are complemented by a thorough modeling of the neutron signal using the GEANT4 simulation package, demonstrating the appropriateness of this tool to model these rare processes. As a result, a precise neutron production yield can be presented. Thus, future underground experiments will be able to reliably model the expected rate of muon-induced neutrons, making it possible to develop the necessary shielding concept to suppress this background component.

With the Large Area Telescope (LAT), its main instrument onboard, Fermi opened a new era in high-energy astrophysics and in particular for the study of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), which are short flashes of -rays associated with the brightest and most distant events ever observed in our universe after the Big Bang. My thesis work focused primarily on the observations of this phenomenon with the LAT (20 MeV - 300 GeV) and the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (10 keV - 40 MeV) onboard the Fermi satellite. After describing the procedure used for detection and analysis of LAT GRBs, I will provide an overview of the temporal and spectral features observed during the prompt emission of these events after one year and a half of operation for Fermi. GRBs can also be used as a tool to probe interesting physics. My focus will be on the detection of very high energy photons (typically above 10 GeV) associated with LAT GRBs and which were used to set significant constraints both on a possible violation of Lorentz invariance - which postulates that all observers measure exactly the same speed of light in vacuum, independently of photon energy - and on the Optical-Ultraviolet extragalactic background light in the Universe.

Book excerpt: We have measured the gamma-ray emission spectrum of the Moon using the data collected by the Large Area Telescope onboard the Fermi satellite during its first seven years of operation, in the energy range from 30 MeV up to a few GeV. We have also studied the time evolution of the flux, finding a correlation with the solar activity. We have developed a full Monte Carlo simulation describing the interactions of cosmic rays with the lunar surface. The results of the present analysis can be explained in the framework of this model, where the production of gamma rays is due to the interactions of cosmic-ray proton and helium nuclei with the surface of the Moon. Lastly, we have used our simulation to derive the cosmic-ray proton and helium spectra near Earth from the Moon gamma-ray data.
