Book excerpt: The Matawai Maroon Johannes King (ca. 1830-1898) taught himself to read and write at an advanced age. He wanted to bridge the gap between the generations by publishing his "Book of Horrors" (Skrekiboekoe) and the present book which has been given the title Life at Marispaston. King wanted to explain the root of the problems between him and his elder brother, Chief Noah Andrai, representatives respectively of the church and the state at the village level. King wanted to justify his life in the eyes of the church, the EBG-Moravian Brethren, and his fellow Maroons. This book is an important contribution to the church history of Suriname, yet also offers insights into the history of the Maroon communities in Suriname. This book is one of the first original works in Sranantongo.

Download or read book Living in the Ottoman Ecumenical Community written by Markus Koller and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-07-31 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book dedicated to Suraiya Faroqhi shows that the early modern world was not only characterized by its having been split up into states with closed frontiers. Writing history “from the bottom”, by treating the Ottoman Empire and other countries as “subjects of history”, reduces the importance of political borders for doing historical research. Each social, economic and religious group had its own world-view and in most of the cases the borders of these communities were not identical with the political frontiers. Regarding the Ottoman Empire and the other early modern states as systems of different ecumenical communities rather than only as political units offers a different approach to a better understanding of the various ways in which their subjects interacted. In this context the term ecumenical community designates social, religious and economic groups building up cross-border communities. Different ecumenical communities overlapped within the boundaries of a state or in a specific area and gave them their distinctive characters. This festschrift for Suraiya Faroqhi aims to describe some of the close contacts between various ecumenical communities within and beyond the Ottoman borders.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT In this book ‘Mutual Massacre ‘, the events that were experienced before, during and after the 1915 deportation are looked upon with a critical perspective. However, the book includes objective, impartial comments and examplications on the Armenian issue. This book is unique that was written on the Armenian issue with a different perspective. It includes all the sides of massacre and that they caused bloody and misery events on the scale of place, time and actors. Armenian Hinchak and Dashnak organization called Humbapets who were the members of armed gang, acted in brutal events and massacred the Muslims. Kurds, saying ‘there is decree from the Sultan’ and massacred Armenians. Kurds called this groups Bejiks. Actors of this mutual massacre were mostly these two groups. Only these two groups? Circassians, some officials, gendarmes, ignorant, governors also took part in this issue. Ottoman Empire legislated the Armenian deportation. The government planned everything delicately to their Armenian citizens arrive safely and thought the precautions to be taken, ordered the obligations to the civilian authorities. There was no genocidal intent or purpose. But, were the deported Armenians sent in accordance with the instructions published after the deportation law? Exactly, NO! The deportation turned in to massacre, plunder and oppression in some places. All sides of these massacres should accept their faults. Betrayals, weaknesses, provocations, causes, consequences, wrong policies, plunders etc.…

Download or read book Voices That Matter written by Marlene Schäfers and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2022-12-23 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fine-grained ethnography exploring the sociopolitical power of Kurdish women’s voices in contemporary Turkey. “Raise your voice!” and “Speak up!” are familiar refrains that assume, all too easily, that gaining voice will lead to empowerment, healing, and inclusion for marginalized subjects. Marlene Schäfers’s Voices That Matter reveals where such assumptions fall short, demonstrating that “raising one’s voice” is no straightforward path to emancipation but fraught with anxieties, dilemmas, and contradictions. In its attention to the voice as form, this book examines not only what voices say but also how they do so, focusing on Kurdish contexts where oral genres have a long, rich legacy. Examining the social labor that voices carry out as they sound, speak, and resonate, Schäfers shows that where new vocal practices arise, they produce new selves and practices of social relations. In Turkey, recent decades have seen Kurdish voices gain increasing moral and political value as metaphors of representation and resistance. Women’s voices, in particular, are understood as potent means to withstand patriarchal restrictions and political oppression. By ethnographically tracing the transformations in how Kurdish women relate to and employ their voices as a result of these shifts, Schäfers illustrates how contemporary politics foster not only new hopes and desires but also create novel vulnerabilities as they valorize, elicit, and discipline voice in the name of empowerment and liberation.

Download or read book Sir Gerald Fitzmaurice and the World Crisis of 1930 1945 written by Anthony Carty and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fitzmaurice and the World Crisis examines the impact of the legal advice of G.G. Fitzmaurice on the making of British Foreign Policy during the key phases of the developing World Crisis, from 1932 to 1945, in relations with Japan and Germany. Particular attention is given to whether relations with Germany were defined in terms of classical power politics or in a new language of the rule of law in international society. The main themes highlight Fitzmaurice's contribution to the shaping of major issues and illustrate the breadth of scope in the work of the legal adviser: the Manchurian Crisis; Anglo-German relations in the 1930s; the concluding of the Anglo-Polish Treaty of 1939; economic warfare and the laws of war at sea (1939-43); debate surrounding the nature of Germany's surrender and the drafting of armistice terms. The book breaks new ground with respect to the basic technical crafts of the international lawyer. It shows how the skills of the diplomatic historian, working with unpublished Foreign Office archives, are essential to unravelling the true legal practice of a state as an element in the evolution of customary international law. The aim is not simply to unearth and present, in a minimally edited form, the legal opinions of Fitzmaurice, but also to assess his impact within the Foreign Office. It concludes that the role of the individual international lawyer in government institutions is potentially very significant. However, his influence depends not simply on the stubbornness with which he holds onto his professional expertise, but also on his moral vision and sensitivity towards the complexities of the context in which he has the potential to shape events.
