Book excerpt: Feral Tracks is based on the true story of a sixteen-year-old schoolboy who ran away from home with four dollars and hitchhiked around Australia. Daniel's exploits are a roller-coaster ride through a wild summer off the leash, the madness of share-house living, outback mustering of feral cattle, and nightclub excess. Told with driving energy, blunt honesty and dry humor, Feral Tracks shows why survival on the road means growing up fast. "Mitchell's debut novel is stunning in its breadth of locations, vibrant characterizations and intelligent handling of contemporary issues ... this is an impressive, clever and entirely satisfying book." Viewpoint "The male version of Puberty Blues." ABC Radio "The energy behind Feral Tracks comes from Mitchell's ability to take a year's worth of adventures, spanning the entire country, and to weave them into a fast-moving and engrossing story." Courier Mail "Despite the tribulations of survival on the road, Mitchell's alter-ego is articulate, intelligent and, most importantly, resourceful." The Age "Succeeds on all fronts." Sydney Morning Herald

Download or read book Feral Tracks written by Euan Mitchell and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel based on the true story of a sixteen-year-old schoolboy who ran away from home with four dollars and hitchhiked around Australia. Daniel's exploits are a roller-coaster ride through a wild summer 'off the leash', the madness of share-house living, outback mustering of feral cattle, and nightclub excess. Told with driving energy, blunt honesty and dry humour, Feral Tracks shows why survival on the road means growing up fast. The National Library of Australia regards this adaptation as a first edition not a revised edition because it has been completely rewritten (line by line) although the storyline is similar. The addition of the subtitle (which appears on the title page and CiP data but not on the cover) makes the new version bibliographically unique. The first prelim page explains the evolution of the story for those interested. Feral Tracks captivated teenagers when first released in 1998, including reluctant male readers. It was short-listed for a readers' choice award and optioned for a feature film. The screenplay was created in 2002 and, although not produced as a movie, inspired this newly rewritten version of the story. Feral Tracks: the novel adapted from the screenplay has transformed the travelogue style of the first publication into a more tightly structured story format for a fresh readership. Vulgar Press is supporting its publication of the novel with free Study Notes, downloadable from vulgar.com.au, due to the story's popularity with Years 10 and 11 English classes in Australia, New Zealand and the UK.

Book Information Technology and Military Power

Download or read book Information Technology and Military Power written by Jon R. Lindsay and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-15 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Militaries with state-of-the-art information technology sometimes bog down in confusing conflicts. To understand why, it is important to understand the micro-foundations of military power in the information age, and this is exactly what Jon R. Lindsay's Information Technology and Military Power gives us. As Lindsay shows, digital systems now mediate almost every effort to gather, store, display, analyze, and communicate information in military organizations. He highlights how personnel now struggle with their own information systems as much as with the enemy. Throughout this foray into networked technology in military operations, we see how information practice—the ways in which practitioners use technology in actual operations—shapes the effectiveness of military performance. The quality of information practice depends on the interaction between strategic problems and organizational solutions. Information Technology and Military Power explores information practice through a series of detailed historical cases and ethnographic studies of military organizations at war. Lindsay explains why the US military, despite all its technological advantages, has struggled for so long in unconventional conflicts against weaker adversaries. This same perspective suggests that the US retains important advantages against advanced competitors like China that are less prepared to cope with the complexity of information systems in wartime. Lindsay argues convincingly that a better understanding of how personnel actually use technology can inform the design of command and control, improve the net assessment of military power, and promote reforms to improve military performance. Warfighting problems and technical solutions keep on changing, but information practice is always stuck in between.

Book Tracking the Golden Isles

    Book Details:
  • Author : Anthony J. Martin
  • Publisher : University of Georgia Press
  • Release : 2020-05-15
  • ISBN : 0820356972
  • Pages : 301 pages

Download or read book Tracking the Golden Isles written by Anthony J. Martin and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this collection of essays, Anthony J. Martin invites us to investigate animal and human traces on the Georgia coast and the remarkable stories these traces, both modern and fossil, tell us. Readers will learn how these traces enabled geologists to discover that the remains of ancient barrier islands still exist on the lower coastal plain of Georgia, showing the recession of oceans millions of years ago. First, Martin details a solid but approachable overview of Georgia barrier island ecosystems—maritime forests, salt marshes, dunes, beaches—and how these ecosystems are as much a product of plant and animal behavior as they are of geology. Martin then describes animal tracks, burrows, nests, and other traces and what they tell us about their makers. He also explains how trace fossils can document the behaviors of animals from millions of years ago, including those no longer extant. Next, Martin discusses the relatively scant history—scarcely five thousand years—of humans on the Georgia coast. He takes us from the Native American shell rings on Sapelo Island to the cobbled streets of Savannah paved with the ballast stones of slave ships. He also describes the human introduction of invasive animals to the coast and their effects on native species. Finally, Martin’s epilogue introduces the sobering idea that climate change, with its resultant extreme weather and rising sea levels, is the ultimate human trace affecting the Georgia coast. Here he asks how the traces of the past and present help us to better predict and deal with our uncertain future.

Book Introduced Mammals of the World

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner in the Scholarly Reference section of the 2004 Australian Awards for Excellence in Educational Publishing. Introduced Mammals of the World provides a concise and extensive source of information on the range of introductions of mammals conducted by humans, and an indication as to which have resulted in adverse outcomes. It provides a very valuable tool by which scientists can assess future potential introductions (or re-introductions) to avoid costly mistakes. It also provides tangible proof of the need for political decision makers to consider good advice and make wise and cautious decisions. Introduced Mammals of the World also provides a comprehensive reference to students of ecological systems management and biological conservation. This book is a companion volume to Introduced Birds of the World, by the same author, published in 1981, and which remains the premier text of its kind in the world more than twenty years after it was published. Introduced Mammals of the World provides the most comprehensive account of the movement of mammals around the world providing details on the date(s) of introduction, the person/agency responsible, the source populations, the location(s) of release, the fate of the introductions, and the impact if known, for over 300 species of mammal.

Book Feral Cities

    Book Details:
  • Author : Tristan Donovan
  • Publisher : Chicago Review Press
  • Release : 2015-04-01
  • ISBN : 1569761035
  • Pages : 266 pages

Download or read book Feral Cities written by Tristan Donovan and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2015-04-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We tend to think of cities as a realm apart, somehow separate from nature, but nothing could be further from the truth. In Feral Cities, Tristan Donovan digs below the urban gloss to uncover the wild creatures that we share our streets and homes with, and profiles the brave and fascinating people who try to manage them. Along the way readers will meet the wall-eating snails that are invading Miami, the boars that roam Berlin, and the monkey gangs of Cape Town. From feral chickens and carpet-roaming bugs to coyotes hanging out in sandwich shops and birds crashing into skyscrapers, Feral Cities takes readers on a journey through streets and neighborhoods that are far more alive than we often realize, shows how animals are adjusting to urban living, and asks what messages the wildlife in our metropolises have for us.

Book Life Traces of the Georgia Coast

Download or read book Life Traces of the Georgia Coast written by Anthony J. Martin and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-14 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered what left behind those prints and tracks on the seashore, or what made those marks or dug those holes in the dunes? Life Traces of the Georgia Coast is an up-close look at these traces of life and the animals and plants that made them. It tells about how the tracemakers lived and how they interacted with their environments. This is a book about ichnology (the study of such traces) and a wonderful way to learn about the behavior of organisms, living and long extinct. Life Traces presents an overview of the traces left by modern animals and plants in this biologically rich region; shows how life traces relate to the environments, natural history, and behaviors of their tracemakers; and applies that knowledge toward a better understanding of the fossilized traces that ancient life left in the geologic record. Augmented by illustrations of traces made by both ancient and modern organisms, the book shows how ancient trace fossils directly relate to modern traces and tracemakers, among them, insects, grasses, crabs, shorebirds, alligators, and sea turtles. The result is an aesthetically appealing and scientifically grounded book that will serve as source both for scientists and for anyone interested in the natural history of the Georgia coast.
