Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the pen name Mrs. Humphry Ward, Mary Augusta Ward wrote the book "Fenwick's Career." The 1906 novel delves on subjects such as marriage, societal transformation, and the conflict between individual aspirations and conventional norms. Gilbert Fenwick, an accomplished and driven attorney, and his spouse, Lady Rose Fenwick, are the central characters of the narrative. Lady Rose finds herself debating her own goals and objectives as Gilbert grows more preoccupied with his work and public persona. In a culture that frequently places a premium on traditional roles and expectations, the story depicts the difficulties and sacrifices that people-women in particular-face. "Fenwick's Career" explores the conflicts between responsibility and personal fulfilment against the backdrop of early 20th-century England, illuminating the changing status of women and the effects of society conventions on people. The protagonists provide a detailed examination of the shifting dynamics of marriage and gender roles in the context of the time by navigating complicated relationships and cultural expectations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vivid and disquieting narrative of Jesuit slaveholding and its historical relationship with Jesuit universities in the United States The Society of Jesus, commonly known as the Jesuits, is renowned for the quality of the order’s impact on higher education. Less well known, however, is the relationship between Jesuit higher education and slavery. For more than two hundred years, Jesuit colleges and seminaries in the United States supported themselves on the labor of the enslaved. “Let Us Go Free” tells the complex stories of the free and enslaved people associated with these Catholic institutions. Walker Gollar shows that, in spite of their Catholic faith, Jesuits were in most respects very typical slaveholders. At times, they may have been concerned with the spiritual and physical well-being of the enslaved, but mostly they were concerned with the finances of their plantations and farms. Gollar traces the legacies of the Jesuits’ participation in the slaveholding economy, portrays the experiences of those enslaved by the Jesuits, and shares the Jesuits’ attempts to come to terms with their history. Deeply based on original research in Jesuit archives, “Let Us Go Free” provides a vivid and disquieting narrative of Jesuit slaveholding for the general reader interested in the historical relationship between slavery and universities in the United States.

Book excerpt: From a beautiful antique that gives its owner a show he'd rather forget, to 'ghost detective' whose exorcism goes horribly wrong and a sinister masked ball which seems to have one too many guests, these ghost stories of supernatural terror are guaranteed to make you shiver, thrill and look under the bed tonight. From rural England to colonial India, in murky haunted mansions and under modern electric lighting, these master storytellers - some of the best writers in the English language - unfold spinetinglers which pull back the veil of everyday life to reveal the nightmares which lurk just out of sight. They are lessons in ingenuity and surprise, sometimes building slowly to a chilling climax, sometimes springing horror on you from the utterly banal. And as you'd expect from these writers, the stories are more than simply frightening - they're also disquieting exposures of mortality, loneliness and the human capacity for both evil and remorse. We wish you pleasant dreams. Contains ghost stories by: Ruth Rendell, M. R. James, Rudyard Kipling, Edith Wharton, E. F. Benson, E. Nesbit, Saki, W. W. Jacobs, W. F. Book excerpt: All is not what it seems at the respectable firm Wainwright Enterprises. When the managing director Arthur Wainwright dies in a suspicious accident, his last will and testament throws the business and family into turmoil. Not only was Wainwright far, far richer than anyone had imagined, but, to the horror of the rest of the family, he has left the bulk of his estate to his nephew Alex and Alex's wife Sally. When the beautiful but inscrutable Sally turns her sharp mind to the finances of the family firm, she exposes startling irregularities. But instead of involving the police and bringing more unwanted attention to the Wainwrights, she sets out to uncover the mystery herself. However, when the firm's financial controller is brutally murdered, the police are finally called in, with Detective Chief Inspector Fenwick heading the investigation. Fenwick and his team quickly establish that there have been three other suspicious deaths connected to the Wainwrights. Have the deaths happened because the company is a front for illicit activity, or because someone wants a bigger share of Arthur Wainwright's fortune? As time slips by, it becomes clear that Fenwick is up against a cunning and ruthless criminal, or criminals. But time is running out, and so, too, is everyone's patience... Faced with the challenge of balancing detective work with his single-parent commitments, DCI Andrew Fenwick brings new depth and dimension to a gripping police procedural. With its expert plotting and complex characters, Fatal Legacy is a thrilling introduction to this stunning new series.
