Download or read book Daughters of 1968 written by Lisa Greenwald and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daughters of 1968 is the story of French feminism between 1944 and 1981, when feminism played a central political role in the history of France. The key women during this epoch were often leftists committed to a materialist critique of society and were part of a postwar tradition that produced widespread social change, revamping the workplace and laws governing everything from abortion to marriage. The May 1968 events—with their embrace of radical individualism and antiauthoritarianism—triggered a break from the past, and the women’s movement split into two strands. One became universalist and intensely activist, the other particularist and less activist, distancing itself from contemporary feminism. This theoretical debate manifested itself in battles between women and organizations on the streets and in the courts. The history of French feminism is the history of women’s claims to individualism and citizenship that had been granted their male counterparts, at least in principle, in 1789. Yet French women have more often donned the mantle of particularism, advancing their contributions as mothers to prove their worth as citizens, than they have thrown it off, claiming absolute equality. The few exceptions, such as Simone de Beauvoir or the 1970s activists, illustrate the diversity and tensions within French feminism, as France moved from a corporatist and tradition-minded country to one marked by individualism and modernity.

This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

This book was released on 2017-01-06 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On April 14, 1986, Simone de Beauvoir died in Paris. She was the “prettiest Existentialist”, who during her long and intense life had observed, described, analytically deconstructed and effectively changed the world that surrounded her, “one word at a time”. An engaged intellectual like her life partner and comrade Jean-Paul Sartre, she took actively part in most of the main social and political struggles of the 20th century, including, first and foremost, women’s emancipation and self-determination, as well as the decolonisation of French Algeria, and the denouncement of American imperialism in Vietnam and the marginalisation of elderly people in contemporary societies. This collection of essays, arising from the 18th International Conference of the Simone de Beauvoir Society held in Cagliari, Italy, in June 2010, provides a major contribution to the field of Beauvoirian studies with up-to-date research provided by scholars from a variety of disciplines that range from French literature to gender studies, from philosophy to social sciences, offering a multifaceted overview on the “state of the art” of research on the life and the works of Simone de Beauvoir, 30 years after her demise.

Download or read book Doing Feminist Research written by H. Roberts and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By now it must be clear to even the most traditional of male scholars that in doing sociological research we can no longer follow Evans-Pritchard's advice to behave like a gentleman, keep off the women, take quinine daily and play it by ear. This volume presents accounts of research work undertaken by sociologists who have been influenced by feminism or the feminist critique of sociology, or both. It proceeds from the basis that problems raised in personal accounts of research are themselves of sociological importance and that such accounts can offer the student a lively insight into research of a kind that is often denied by conventional methods textbooks. That there are sexual as well as social divisions in society cannot be ignored by sociologists, but much of the work that has appeared up to now has been concerned with making women visible within sociology. There has been little basic theoretical work, and still less work on the ways in which either taking a feminist perspective, or even merely taking account of women in research, affects the research process. This volume presents discussion on practical, methodological. theoretical and ethical issues raised where the sociologist adopts, or is aware of, a feminist perspective. 'There are very few methods books like this one that sociologists would pick up and read from cover to cover - and cause a queue of colleagues to form eagerly awaiting to get their hands on it. Compelling reading'. Colin Bell New Society
