Book Fashioning the Feminine in the Greek Novel

Download or read book Fashioning the Feminine in the Greek Novel written by Katharine Haynes and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Greek novel plays a key part in the debate on gender in antiquity, forcing us to ask why the female protagonists are such strong and positive characters. This book shows how such heroines can be seen as a type of 'constructed feminine'.

Book Redefining the Real

Download or read book Redefining the Real written by Margaret-Anne Hutton and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is 'the literary fantastic' and how does it manifest itself in the texts of French and francophone women writers publishing at the close of the twentieth and start of the twenty-first century? What do we mean today when we talk of 'the real' and 'realism'? These are just some of the questions addressed by the papers in this volume which derive from a conference entitled 'The Fantastic in Contemporary Women's Writing in French' held in London in September 2007. This book sets out to refocus through a non-realist lens on the works of high-profile authors (Darrieussecq, Nothomb, Germain, Cixous and NDiaye) and some of their less highly publicised contemporaries. It analyses and mobilises a wide range of both gendered and non-gendered practices and theories of 'the contemporary fantastic' whilst critically interrogating both of the latter terms and their inter-relation.

Book My Lots are in Thy Hands Sortilege and its Practitioners in Late Antiquity

Download or read book My Lots are in Thy Hands Sortilege and its Practitioners in Late Antiquity written by AnneMarie Luijendijk and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sortilege—the making of decisions by casting lots—was widely practiced in the Mediterranean world during the period known as late antiquity, between the third and eighth centuries CE. In My Lots are in Thy Hands: Sortilege and its Practitioners in Late Antiquity, AnneMarie Luijendijk and William Klingshirn have collected fourteen essays that examine late antique lot divination, especially but not exclusively through texts preserved in Greek, Latin, Coptic, and Syriac. Employing the overlapping perspectives of religious studies, classics, anthropology, economics, and history, contributors study a variety of topics, including the hermeneutics and operations of divinatory texts, the importance of diviners and their instruments, and the place of faith and doubt in the search for hidden order in a seemingly random world.

Book Representing Algerian Women

Download or read book Representing Algerian Women written by Edward John Still and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-01-14 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph explores the ways in which canonical Francophone Algerian authors, writing in the late-colonial period (1945–1962), namely Kateb Yacine, Mohammed Dib, Mouloud Feraoun, Mouloud Mammeri and Assia Djebar, approached the representation of Algerian women through literature. The book initially argues that a masculine domination of public fields of representation in Algeria contributed to a postcolonial marginalization of women as public agents. However, it crucially also argues that the canonical writers of the period, who were mostly male, both textually acknowledged their inability to articulate the experiences and subjectivity of the feminine Other and deployed a remarkable variety of formal and conceptual innovations in producing evocations of Algerian femininity that subvert the structural imbalance of masculine symbolic hegemony. Though it does not shy from investigating those aspects of its corpus that produce ideologically conditioned masculinist representations, the book chiefly seeks to articulate a shared reluctance concerning representativity, a pessimism regarding the revolution's capacity to deliver change for women, and an omnipresent subversion of masculine subjectivity in its canonical texts.

This book was released on 2015-05-08 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of these stories revolve around the forbidden fruit and the conquering of anothers heart by using a fetish, making him helplessly captivated. There are numerous stories of jealousy, envy, and other natural phenomena. The reader will find some samples of those in this book. Traditionally, a lot of ink, saliva, and even tears have been poured about sex, especially when it is about guilty relations between two lovers, relationships in which at least one of the parties is officially recognized as in a relationship or married to another person. These relationships are commonly and humorously referred to as forbidden fruit by analogy to the legend of the Garden of Eden.

Book Four Caribbean Women Playwrights

Download or read book Four Caribbean Women Playwrights written by Vanessa Lee and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-18 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four Caribbean Women Playwrights aims to expand Caribbean and postcolonial studies beyond fiction and poetry by bringing to the fore innovative women playwrights from the French Caribbean: Ina Césaire, Maryse Condé, Gerty Dambury, Suzanne Dracius. Focussing on the significance of these women writers to the French and French Caribbean cultural scenes, the author illustrates how their work participates in global trends within postcolonial theatre. The playwrights discussed here all address socio-political issues, gender stereotypes, and the traumatic slave and colonial pasts of the Caribbean people. Investigating a range of plays from the 1980s to the early 2010s, including some works that have not yet featured in academic studies of Caribbean theatre, and applying theories of postcolonial theatre and local Caribbean theatre criticism, Four Caribbean Women Playwrights should appeal to scholars and students in the Humanities, and to all those interested in the postcolonial, the Caribbean, and contemporary theatre.

Download or read book Fascination written by David Hinds and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2016-02-08 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: May 1968. Paris is awash with violence and public unrest. In a small cinema, where a surreal film is showing, another riot is taking place. Here, the enraged audience smashes up the auditorium, tear out the seats, and chase the film’s director onto the street. This is the premiere of Jean Rollin’s feature debut, The Rape of the Vampire. An outsider of French cinema, Rollin’s films are unique and dreamlike. They offer tales of mystery and nostalgia, obsolescence and seductive female vampires with a thirst for blood and sex. It is a cinema at once strange, evocative and deeply personal. Funding his own projects, Rollin defiantly made the films he wanted to make and in so doing created a fantastique genre unlike any other. The Nude Vampire, The Living Dead Girl and The Grapes of Death are among those films now celebrated as the work of an auteur, one who confounds preconceived notions of ‘Eurotrash’ cinema. This book is devoted to the director and all his work, across all genres, including a nascent French hardcore pornographic film industry. Written with full co-operation from Jean Rollin, shortly before his death in 2010, it contains exclusive interviews and archive material.
