Book Male Roles Masculinities and Violence

Download or read book Male Roles Masculinities and Violence written by Ingeborg Breines and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on an expert group meeting entitled 'Male Roles and Masculinities in the Perspective of a Culture of Peace', which was organised by UNESCO in Oslo, Norway in 1997, the first international discussion of the connections between men and masculinity and peace and war. The group consisted of researchers, activists, policy makers and administrators and the aim of the meeting was to formulate practical suggestions for change. Chapters in the book consist of both regional case studies and social science research on the connections of traditional masculinity and patriarchy to violence and peace building. The Culture of Peace initiatives in this book show how violence is ineffective, and the book contests the views in the socialisation of boy-children that aggressiveness, violence and force are an acceptable means of expression.

Book The Red Thread

  • Author : Bernard Faure
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 1998-10-26
  • ISBN : 1400822602
  • Pages : 345 pages

Download or read book The Red Thread written by Bernard Faure and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1998-10-26 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there a Buddhist discourse on sex? In this innovative study, Bernard Faure reveals Buddhism's paradoxical attitudes toward sexuality. His remarkably broad range covers the entire geography of this religion, and its long evolution from the time of its founder, Xvkyamuni, to the premodern age. The author's anthropological approach uncovers the inherent discrepancies between the normative teachings of Buddhism and what its followers practice. Framing his discussion on some of the most prominent Western thinkers of sexuality--Georges Bataille and Michel Foucault--Faure draws from different reservoirs of writings, such as the orthodox and heterodox "doctrines" of Buddhism, and its monastic codes. Virtually untapped mythological as well as legal sources are also used. The dialectics inherent in Mahvyvna Buddhism, in particular in the Tantric and Chan/Zen traditions, seemed to allow for greater laxity and even encouraged breaking of taboos. Faure also offers a history of Buddhist monastic life, which has been buffeted by anticlerical attitudes, and by attempts to regulate sexual behavior from both within and beyond the monastery. In two chapters devoted to Buddhist homosexuality, he examines the way in which this sexual behavior was simultaneously condemned and idealized in medieval Japan. This book will appeal especially to those interested in the cultural history of Buddhism and in premodern Japanese culture. But the story of how one of the world's oldest religions has faced one of life's greatest problems makes fascinating reading for all.

Book Gender and Narrative in the Mahabharata

Download or read book Gender and Narrative in the Mahabharata written by Simon Brodbeck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-08-09 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sanskrit Mahabharata is one of the most important texts to emerge from the Indian cultural tradition. At almost 75,000 verses it is the longest poem in the world, and throughout Indian history it has been hugely influential in shaping gender and social norms. In the context of ancient India, it is the definitive cultural narrative in the construction of masculine, feminine and alternative gender roles. This book brings together many of the most respected scholars in the field of Mahabharata studies, as well as some of its most promising young scholars. By focusing specifically on gender constructions, some of the most innovative aspects of the Mahabharata are highlighted. Whilst taking account of feminist scholarship, the contributors see the Mahabharata as providing an opportunity to frame discussion of gender in literature not just in terms of the socio-historical roles of men and women. Instead they analyze the text in terms of the wider poetic and philosophical possibilities thrown up by the semiotics of gendering. Consequently, the book bridges a gap in text-critical methodology between the traditional philological approach and more recent trends in gender and literary theory. Gender and Narrative in the Mahabharata will be appreciated by readers interested in South Asian studies, Hinduism, religious studies and gender studies.

Book Black Queer Studies

Download or read book Black Queer Studies written by E. Patrick Johnson and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2005-11-01 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While over the past decade a number of scholars have done significant work on questions of black lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered identities, this volume is the first to collect this groundbreaking work and make black queer studies visible as a developing field of study in the United States. Bringing together essays by established and emergent scholars, this collection assesses the strengths and weaknesses of prior work on race and sexuality and highlights the theoretical and political issues at stake in the nascent field of black queer studies. Including work by scholars based in English, film studies, black studies, sociology, history, political science, legal studies, cultural studies, and performance studies, the volume showcases the broadly interdisciplinary nature of the black queer studies project. The contributors consider representations of the black queer body, black queer literature, the pedagogical implications of black queer studies, and the ways that gender and sexuality have been glossed over in black studies and race and class marginalized in queer studies. Whether exploring the closet as a racially loaded metaphor, arguing for the inclusion of diaspora studies in black queer studies, considering how the black lesbian voice that was so expressive in the 1970s and 1980s is all but inaudible today, or investigating how the social sciences have solidified racial and sexual exclusionary practices, these insightful essays signal an important and necessary expansion of queer studies. Contributors. Bryant K. Alexander, Devon Carbado, Faedra Chatard Carpenter, Keith Clark, Cathy Cohen, Roderick A. Ferguson, Jewelle Gomez, Phillip Brian Harper, Mae G. Henderson, Sharon P. Holland, E. Patrick Johnson, Kara Keeling, Dwight A. McBride, Charles I. Nero, Marlon B. Ross, Rinaldo Walcott, Maurice O. Wallace

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Male feminization for fun and growth? Why not? It's a question that critical thinkers ask about many subjects. Everyday there's someone who sees something and instead of saying no they ask, why not? What if the Wright brothers agreed with everyone that man can't fly? What if Henry Ford believed like everyone else that there could be no mass production? What if Galileo gave up on the idea that the world is round and not flat like the Church wanted him to? If something can be beneficial for you or others, but the accepted societal view says it's wrong, does that really make it wrong? Male-to-female crossdressing is one of those things. Sometimes viewed as an unmanly due to societal paradigms and beliefs and called a deviant behavior, it's carried a stigma with it. Does that mean it shouldn't be done? Women are allowed to cross-dress; it has become commonplace for women to wear men's styles of clothing, yet men are forced to stay in men's clothes. Dresses, skirts, stockings and all the feminine accoutrements have fallen to the wayside for most women today, and it's perfectly acceptable for them to wear flannel shirts with jeans, or sweatpants with sneakers or flat shoes. Why not? Why shouldn't a male be offered the same flexibility? Until the time comes when open-mindedness is more prevalent, and paradigms and beliefs are changed, it's still possible to do in secret or with likeminded people and groups, and the benefits are just as great. To balance the individual's masculine and feminine energies and activate the rise on Maslow's hierarchy of needs is not a trivial thing, and that is just one of many benefits it brings. If you, a person close to you, a spouse or partner, or a friend of yours is involved in male-to-female crossdressing, has an interest in it, or is bored and wants to try something new and exciting, then drop the veil of illusions by creating a new feminine illusion and thrive. Read on and see what benefits can follow in this thoughtful short read that just might improve your or someone else's life-or at least help you understand it better. Look inside now.

Book excerpt: Now that the Twentieth Century is behind us . what made it what it was? 200 million human beings killed by war, totalitarianism, and extermination programs. What made the twentieth century the most murderous age in human history, as well as the age that made the greatest advances ever in science and technology, while art and serious music declined into abstraction, non-communication, and grotesque hoaxes-blank canvases, old urinals, cans of excrement, and concertos consisting of four minutes of silence? This book argues that the century was marked by an over-masculinization of the Western mind, leading to autism and psychopathic aggression, and the eclipse of the feminine, expressive, emotional, empathetic side of human nature. Hence the unprecedented culture of total war and genocide, and the totalitarian projects to raze the human past and start again-which Modernism carried out in the arts. Hence also the masculinization of sexual behavior (as romance gave way to pornography, and marriage to promiscuity), the adoption by women of a male work role, the decline of motherhood and family, and the collapse of Western birthrates. This is all traced back to the rise of two aggressive, ultra-masculine ideologies in the nineteenth century, Darwinism and Marxism (which gave birth to Fascism and Feminism.) These ideologies put violence, conflict and aggression at the heart of life, and changed human mentalities. This book examines these developments through the literature and art of the past hundred and fifty years, and discusses their implications for the future of Western Civilization.
