Book excerpt: A new edition of a groundbreaking, feminist defense of free speech for pornography Named a Notable Book by The New York Times Book Review, Defending Pornography examines a key question that has divided feminists for decades: is censoring pornography good or bad for women? Nadine Strossen makes a powerful case that increasing government power to censor sexual expression, beyond the limits that the First Amendment sensibly permits (for example, outlawing child pornography) would do more harm than good for women and others who have traditionally been marginalized due to sex or gender. She explains how the very anti-porn laws pushed by some feminists have led to the censorship of LGBTQ+ and feminist works, and she examines the startling connections between anti-porn feminists and right-wing fundamentalists. In an illuminating new Preface, Strossen lays out the multiple current assaults on sexual expression, which continue to come from across the ideological spectrum. She shows that freedom for such expression remains an essential prerequisite for the equality, safety, and dignity of women and sexual/gender minorities.

Book excerpt: Given that censorship is so dangerous, it is frightening to see people court it so casually. Yet we hear few demands that the government support its moves for censorship with serious evidence for its claims that sexual or violent materials are known to cause anti-social acts. This book aims to show that there is no evidence for these claims, that the arguments against pornography and for censorship are not supported by any scientific or historical evidence, that anti-pornography activism is a distraction from the real needs of women, and that the very nature of the way the arguments are posed rests on sexist and representative beliefs.

Book Bad Girls and Dirty Pictures

Download or read book Bad Girls and Dirty Pictures written by Alison Assiter and published by Pluto Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For well over a decade, half-baked analysis and phony science have been used by some feminists to side-track the women's movement into puritanical campaigns against sexual material and imaginative sexual exploration. Many feminists would say that this widely publicised version of feminism is itself sexist, and that the increasingly vocal anti-pornography campaigns are founded on theoretical dead-ends that have allowed feminists to deviate drastically from the basic goals of women's liberation.Bad Girls & Dirty Pictures puts these anti-sex, anti-porn arguments under the microscope of a more thorough and considered feminist analysis. It examines the flaws in the research that purports to prove the harm of pornography and warns against the continuing use of censorship by politicians and the moral right, as well as exposing the dangers of anti-porn feminist arguments.Contributions from a wide range of women, including sex workers and academics, remind us that pornography does not have a special place in our oppression, and that censorship must still be seen as dangerous enemy of women. Bad Girls & Dirty Pictures is a much-needed antidote to falsehoods, shabby thinking, and patronising sexism that have fuelled anti-pornography campaigns and misled the women's movement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1985 the Special Committee on Pornography and Prostitution, the Fraser Committee, recommended the criminalization of violent and degrading sexually explicit material on the ground that it harmed women. On two occasions (in 1986 with Bill C-114 and in 1987 with Bill C-54) the Mulroney government proposed a more restrictive approach to the regulation of pornography. Despite the support of various feminist and religious/family-oriented organizations, the government's attempts at law reform failed. Obscenity provisions were neither repealed nor replaced by a law criminalizing pornography. Blue Politics looks at the social and political mechanisms that initiated, shaped, and finally defeated the controversial legal proposals of the Conservative government in the 1980s. Dany Lacombe documents the emergence of a feminist definition of pornography, analyses the impact this definition had on the debate between conservative and civil libertarian organizations, and identifies the emergence of groups who strongly resisted the attempt to reform the law: feminists against censorship and sex radicals. Finally, she examines the way in which institutional practices are shaped by and yet shape the power relations between groups. The emphasis is on the way such power relations are embodied in the policy-making process. Drawing on Michel Foucault's concept of `power/knowledge,' Lacombe reveals how the process to criminalize pornography inaugurated a controversial politics that produced collective identities and transformed power relations. She shows law reform as a strategy that both constrains and enables action.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of pornography is used here for the first time to demonstrate the role of the state in manipulating 'social problems' through moral panic. The book examines critically the views of the various interest groups involved in the debate over pornography. Alongside the puritanism of conservatives and the laissez-faire attitude of liberals, a feminist critique of sexuality in patriarchal culture has now been developed, one in danger of being co-opted by the same repressive patriarchal culture.

Book excerpt: Feminists do not present a united front on either the legal and political remedies they propose, or definitions of sexuality and appropriate standards representing it. This study is the first to treat pornography within the context of the debate among feminists, also examining nonfeminist views embodied in popular opinion and social policy. Presenting an in-depth review of feminist and nonfeminist literature, it explores influential feminist ideologies as well as those that are only beginning to be voiced. The authors first review the femininst movement in relation to the pornography debate among both feminists and nonfeminists. Divisions over questions of sexuality, censorship, and sexual roles and lifestyles are highlighted in an analysis of radical and libertarian feminist viewpoints. Liberal, Marxist, socialist, and black approaches to feminism are also evaluated. Feminism and Pornography also addresses the male perspective on pornography and men's responses to the feminists' debate. The final chapters assess this debate in terms of empirical research on pornography, and legal and nonlegal strategies for regulating pornography. Providing an understanding of a broad range of feminist viewpoints, this balanced, even-handed discussion may prove helpful in moving beyond the current impasse. Feminism and Pornography is an important new work for research or courses in women's studies, politics, sexuality, social problems, deviance, and law.
