Finally, Glenn Ligon employs stereotypic images of black men constructed for white pleasure, drawn from 1970s pornographic magazines, and explores the possibility of recovering and transforming these images into non-racist expressions of pleasure and desire. Further, I will support Seesslen’s claim that, after World War I, there was the public’s desire for a more honest and harsh view of America which is fulfilled by the post-war realism used in hard-boiled fiction. For this, I will try to outline the realism in Dashiell Hammett’s "The Maltese Falcon" (1930) as a representation and/or critique of the United States in the 1920s. This particular novel is used because it can be seen as representative for many other hard-boiled fictions and the hard-boiled genre in general as Dashiell Hammett’s work redefined crime fiction. His stories mark an obvious shift from the classical detective story in which the detective is the main crime solver in middle-class suburban places, to an urban space in the United States where organized crime, gangsters and corruption pervade the city. The characters involved in "The Maltese Falcon" will help to draw a certain connection between the historical development of the United States and the development of men and women in hard-boiled fiction. For that reason, in chapter 2, I will try to define the hard-boiled genre and in which way its plot structure and themes are shaped by the historical events and social issues of that time. In chapter 3, I will present the two archetypal characters, the Femme fatale and the tough guy, in hard-boiled fiction. Because both of them can be found in "The Maltese Falcon", I will use this novel to analyse masculinity, or more precisely, the protagonist Sam Spade, and femininity, mainly Brigid O’Shaughnessy, in chapter 4 and 5. By means of the conclusion in chapter 6 I will summarize the main results in order to support my thesis that the hard-boiled fictions’ plot, especially the gender identities, mirror historical incidents and social developments the United States underwent during 1920 onward. In addition, I will put the insights on femininity and masculinity in hard-boiled detective fictions in a broader context concerning the film industry and the hard-boiled fiction’s impact on following genres, just like Film noir.

Thus, in every period there was a depiction on how male and female have to behave and how affection and sexuality is shown. Comparing two literary pieces of art from one period, one can clearly see the discrepancy even presented by two different authors.While Shakespeare's depiction of gender and sexuality has a more masculine tone in his tragedy "Coriolanus," the sonnet sequence "Astrophil and Stella," written by Phillip Sidney gives a more feminine picture of men and women.

Nevertheless, it was exactly this attempt to avoid sexuality and gender topics which led to sometimes excessive discussions about these issues, for example the so called “Great Evil” of prostitution and related to that the enforcement of the Contagious Disease Acts in the 1860s. These discussions, however, made many Victorians – for example the “New Women” that formed the basis for the later on emerging feminism – aware of the injustice of the status quo and led to a questioning of the traditional separate spheres ideology. The ideas of womanhood and masculinity had to be discussed and to be adapted to a new age. Although the stereotype of the “uptight Victorian” lives on until today, the literature of this time – since literature always mirrors the cultural climate of the society in which it came into being – demonstrates the Victorian’s interest in gender questions. In this paper Robert Browning will serve as an example for a poet highly aware of these ongoing changes. In his dramatic monologue “Porphyria’s Lover” he takes up the gender issue and deals with femininity, manliness and sexuality. The first chapter of this paper will give some information about the form of the dramatic monologue as a special means to present a person’s inner life and furthermore, will deal with the conventional idea of gender in the Victorian age. On the basis of this more general infor-mation, the second chapter will have a closer look at the poem itself and will compare the concept of gender roles and the construction of gender relationship designed by Browning with the traditional gender ideology. Browning’s way of dealing with this issue will be taken as one example for the Victorian’s awareness of the complexity of the gender question.

Additionally, the inquiry concerning the Meaning of Song Texts in Disney's 'Mulan' appears useful as these always play an important role in conveying movie themes. In order to establish a connection to the seminar on which this paper is based, I will illustrate how the movie is a good example for Judith Butler's theory of Gender as Performance. Last but not least, I would like to show the Influence of Disney's 'Mulan' on Society because fairy tales and movies '[...] do influence the manner in which children conceive the world and their places in it [...]'. Drawing the 'Conclusion', I will try a careful approach to find out if Disney's 'Mulan' might even be considered as a feminist movie. (...)
