Tomás is asked by his ailing papa to take his place as captain of the flying pole dance, el juego del volador, an important part of the Fiesta de San Luis which is to be held in ten days. Tomás dreads the thought of climbing the 80 foot pole. He worries that he might forget a tune or stumble as he leads the dancers, bringing shame to himself and his family. In spite of his anxieties, he makes the promise to his father. He fears the ridicule of the four flying pole dancers, los voladores, when they learn he is to be their captain. Initially, the men do make fun of him. However, Tomás does not take his promise lightly and he finds the courage to confront the men with the truth-without him as their leader, el juego del volador cannot happen.This flying pole dance is an ancient game still preformed in parts of Mexico. A brief description of this highly skilled ancient game is given in the book with illustrations of los voldores, the flying pole dancers, in their colorful costumes.Tomás has such devotion and love for his father that he is able to find the courage to succeed in leading the dancers, playing the tunes and, scariest of all, climbing the 80 foot pole ahead of the four men. Playing his flute and dancing at the very top on a small platform, Tomás keeps his promise to his papa and conquers his fears! He feels proud of his accomplishment. An accompanying illustration shows the boy in his beautiful costume, beaming happily.At the story's end there are several questions in both Spanish and English which can promote a conversation about what it means to make and keep a promise.

En ese periodo Ana descubre sus talentos y también se da cuenta de sus “demonios internos”. Extraída de su mundo de clase media urbana Ana es obligada por las circunstancias a penetrar en la clase social pudiente de su ciudad y después, desterrada, encuentra su lugar entre los desafortunados, todo a tiempo de rock. Debo advertir que no es una novela histórica, es más bien como una canción de punk, rápida y directa, corta y contundente, sin pretensiones barrocas ni cuidado de un estilo particular. Con algunas fechas me tomé cierta libertad, no se molesten los puristas por favor. Finalmente sólo quiero decirles que si quieren hacer algo lo hagan, esa es parte de la esencia de este escrito.
