Download or read book Dream When You re Feeling Blue written by Elizabeth Berg and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2008-01-29 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Berg takes us to Chicago at the time of World War II in this wonderful story about three sisters, their lively Irish family, and the men they love. As the novel opens, Kitty and Louise Heaney say good-bye to their boyfriends Julian and Michael, who are going to fight overseas. On the domestic front, meat is rationed, children participate in metal drives, and Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller play songs that offer hope and lift spirits. And now the Heaney sisters sit at their kitchen table every evening to write letters–Louise to her fiancé, Kitty to the man she wishes fervently would propose, and Tish to an ever-changing group of men she meets at USO dances. In the letters the sisters send and receive are intimate glimpses of life both on the battlefront and at home. For Kitty, a confident, headstrong young woman, the departure of her boyfriend and the lessons she learns about love, resilience, and war will bring a surprise and a secret, and will lead her to a radical action for those she loves. The lifelong consequences of the choices the Heaney sisters make are at the heart of this superb novel about the power of love and the enduring strength of family.
Download or read book My Three Sided Story written by Brooklyn Elsie and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2018-07-19 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Three-Sided Story tells of the potency of new love, the destruction of heartbreak, and the recovery and renewal afterwards. These poems explore what it feels like to surrender to love—the excitement, the vulnerability, the longing—and how a hometown can transform into a backdrop for a relationship. They lure you into the colourful spark of young relationships, ripe with lust and exploration, and capture the turmoil and sometimes trepidation of sinking into an existence with that other person. More than anything, My Three-Sided Story offers poems about those days, weeks, and months when a relationship splinters and pulls apart, and the pain and confusion that comes from losing someone you care about. It tells of the slow process of being put back together, letting go, and loving yourself instead. These poems are at once raw, dark, hopeful, and bright—a read for anyone in the throes of heartbreak and renewal.

Download or read book Healing Earthquakes written by Jimmy Santiago Baca and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An award-winning collection of poems that vividly capture the astonishing emotional range of an entire romance from beginning to end. Jimmy Santiago Baca introduces us to a man and woman before they are acquainted and re-creates their first meeting, falling in love, their decision to make a family, the eventual realization of each other’s irreconcilable faults, the resulting conflicts, the breakup and hostility, and, finally, their transcendence of the bitterness and resentment. Throughout the relationship we are privy to the couple’s anguish of loneliness, the heady rush of new love, the irritations and joys of raising children, the difficulties in truly knowing someone, the doldrums of breakup, and so on. It is impossible not to identify with these characters and to recognize the universal drama of human connection. As he weaves this story, Baca explores many of his traditional themes: the beauty and cruelty of the desert lands where he spent much of his life, the grace and wisdom of animals, and the quiet dignity of life on small Chicano farms. An extraordinary work that “expresses both bliss and heartache with lyric intensity” from one of America’s finest poets (Booklist). “Baca is a force in American poetry . . . His words heal, inspire, and elicit the earthly response of love.” —Garrett Hongo “[Baca] writes with unconcealed passion . . . what makes his writing so exciting to me is the way in which it manifests both an intense lyricism and that transformative vision which perceives the mythic and archetypal significance of life-events.” —Denise Levertov
Download or read book A Black Philadelphia Reader written by Louis J. Parascandola and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2024-06-11 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between the City of Brotherly Love and its Black residents has been complicated from the city’s founding through the present day. A Black Philadelphia Reader traces this complex history in the words of Black writers who were native to, lived in, or had significant connections to the city. Featuring the works of famous authors—including W. E. B. Du Bois, Harriet Jacobs, Sonia Sanchez and John Edgar Wideman—alongside lesser-known voices, this reader is an immersive and enriching composite portrait of the Black experience in Philadelphia. Through fiction and nonfiction, poetry and prose, readers witness episodes of racial prejudice and gender inequality in areas like public health, housing, education, policing, criminal justice, and public transportation. And yet amid these myriad challenges, the writers convey an enduring faith, a love of family and community, and a hope that Philadelphia will fulfill its promises to its Black citizens. Thoughtfully introduced and accompanied by notes that contextualize the works and aid readers’ comprehension, this book will appeal to a wide audience of Philadelphians and other readers interested in American, African American, and urban studies.
Download or read book Fates Rapture written by J. Bernard and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-04 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Changing Chauvinism One Book at a Time' Imagine men whom have suffered some of the same travesties that women have suffered...... Yes, men that are intuned with their emotions; who are abused, cheated on, and heartbroken. Imagine husbands and boyfriends lied to, kicked out and unsupported. Imagine an unattended spouse, a sensitive thug, and a scorned gentleman. Women bashing? My experience in writing "Changing Chauvinism One Book at a Time", comes from the internal hurt and pain; emotionally, that I have suffered. I've been in love. I've hurt others and have also been hurt by others. Yet, during the painful times, no woman would trust in my emotions. Leaving me to become abandoned by someone in whom I really loved. The agony of the matter was that, she was apparently under the impression that I wasn't hurting, I didn't nor don't, care. When in actually, I was torn inside. My experience, I believe, allows me firsthand to write and describe the myths behind these clichés.........That real men DO experience emotions; has fears, doubts, and all the struggles and strengths that our ancestors possessed. Yes! We are a new breed of men, who loves harder and with an urgency and passion.........because, our understanding is that when we contribute to any endeavor or love; it strengthens us! It never weakens; it is always invested and brings some type of return. Men are human too, needing to be put on a neither more powerful, nor less sensitive, pedestal. Although our Y-Chromosome proves to be strong; our X-Chromosome allows us to feel, love and show compassion. My tales are of that of broken men, of suffering or suffered, man. The what is going on 'Inside' of a man, that which we can hide, yet not ignore.
