Book Feeding Strategies for Grazing Organic Dairy Cows and the Impact on Milk Production

Download or read book Feeding Strategies for Grazing Organic Dairy Cows and the Impact on Milk Production written by Ariel Ayers and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic dairy producers rely on pasture-based diets during the grazing season to provide their lactating herd with the nutrients to support lactation. This can present challenges for producers in the Northeast US, as pasture nutrients can vary with season and weather, ultimately impacting milk productivity and animal health. There is currently limited literature outlining feeding guidelines for producers to meet dairy cattle nutrient requirements on pasture-based systems. This thesis outlines an investigation of the nutritional strategies that are utilized on organic dairy farms in Vermont, as well as a case study utilizing a modified supplement to identify the implications of this modified supplement profile on animal health and productivity during the grazing season. The first objective (Chapter 2) was to survey nutritional management strategies commonly used on organic operations in the Northeast, and evaluate the impact on animal health and productivity. Sixteen Vermont organic dairy farms were evaluated during the grazing season of 2017 and data collected included management, animal, and pasture data. Farms were assessed at three timepoints throughout the grazing season, including once in the spring, summer, and fall. Farms were later divided into two groups based on their measured milk production for subsequent comparison: 1) high milk group (HMG, n=8) or 2) low milk group (LMG, n=8). Non-forage supplementation for the HMG ranged from 4.78-7.03 kg DM per animal and the LMG ranged from grass-only to 7.93 kg DM per animal. Protein and fat yield were greater in the HMG compared to the LMG. Protein yield decreased from spring to summer, and remained similar from summer to fall. The rumen-undegradable protein (RUP) concentration in pasture followed a similar trend as the protein yield observed in both HMG and LMG. The second objective (Chapter 3) was to utilize a modified supplement on commercial organic dairy farms during the grazing season to determine whether dietary protein limitations were the primary factor limiting milk production on organic dairies in Vermont during the grazing season. Six Vermont organic dairy farms participated in a 6-week trial consisting of a 2-week baseline period and 4-week experimental period, with management, animal, and pasture data collected throughout the 6-week trial. Farms were paired by their 2017 summer milk urea nitrogen (MUN) profile, and farms within each pair were assigned to 1) continuation of their regular supplements (n=3, control group, CON), or 2) supplement targeted to 16% crude protein (CP, as % of dry matter) formulated using an organic barley and roasted soybean mix (n=3, treatment group, TRT). The modified supplement CP (% DM) averaged 14.8% for CON and 19.4% for TRT during the experimental period. Milk production was higher during the experimental period for TRT vs. CON. Milk composition was different between groups, with fat and protein percent being higher in the CON group compared to the TRT for the 6 weeks. During the experimental period TRT had higher MUN concentrations compared to CON. This research outlines nutritional strategies used on organic dairy farms in Vermont and identifies some potential nutritional drivers impacting milk production and composition. These results also indicate that altering the CP content of dietary supplements fed to grazing organic dairy cattle during the summer period in the US Northeast could be a useful mechanism to maintain milk production. Further research could be done to investigate the economic variables for these feeding strategies.

Book Animal Agriculture

Download or read book Animal Agriculture written by Fuller W. Bazer and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2019-10-25 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal Agriculture: Sustainability, Challenges and Innovations discusses the land-based production of high-quality protein by livestock and poultry and how it plays an important role in improving human nutrition, growth and health. With exponential growth of the global population and marked rises in meat consumption per capita, demands for animal-source protein are expected to increase 72% between 2013 and 2050. This raises concerns about the sustainability and environmental impacts of animal agriculture. An attractive solution to meeting increasing needs for animal products and mitigating undesirable effects of agricultural practices is to enhance the efficiency of animal growth, reproduction, and lactation. Currently, there is no resource that offers specific knowledge of both animal science and technology, including biotechnology for the sustainability of animal agriculture for the expanding global demand of food in the face of diminishing resources. This book fills that gap, giving readers all the necessary information on important issues facing modern animal agriculture, namely its sustainability, challenges and innovative solutions. - Integrates new knowledge in animal breeding, biotechnology, nutrition, reproduction and management - Addresses the urgent issue of sustainability in modern animal agriculture - Provides practical solutions on how to solve the current and future problems that face animal agriculture worldwide

Book Feeding Strategies to Improve Health and Sustainability of Dairy Cattle

Download or read book Feeding Strategies to Improve Health and Sustainability of Dairy Cattle written by Caio Seiti Takiya and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dairy farming is a multi-billion industry that produces high-quality sources of protein, vitamins, and minerals in the form of dairy products to an ever-growing world population. The dairy industry, however, has been challenged to produce more milk using feeds that are not desirable for other livestock (i.e. swine and poultry) or human nutrition. High milk producing cows have greater risk of developing metabolic/infectious diseases and reproductive problems, often associated with immune system dysfunction. Feeding strategies during the transition period primarily targeting the modulation of the immune system have shown positive effects on controlling inflammation, measures of cellular immune response, and overall performance of cows. An immunomodulatory feed additive was fed to cows during the dry period and early lactation to evaluate immune cell responses and overall performance. Immune cells were collected from peripheral blood and uterus of cows. The feed additive modulated uterine immune cell response after parturition, where this effect was dependent on parity and day of lactation. Milk responses to this feed additive were influenced by environmental temperature and humidity that cows experienced during 2 wk before and 2 wk after parturition. The administration of sodium salicylate via drinking water during the first week after parturition altered the abundance of inflammatory mediators in subcutaneous adipose tissue of cows. Changes included an increase in abundance of complement system proteins and interleukin-10 signaling, and evidence for greater monocyte infiltration. The metabolic effects of sodium salicylate observed in earlier studies might be associated with changes promoted in adipose tissue. Finally, two experiments were carried out to demonstrate that conventional diets for lactating cows are relatively efficient at converting human-edible foods in milk, returning greater amounts of digestible essential amino acids than the human-edible feeds provided to cows. Findings such as these can provide the dairy industry more tools for improving herd health and promoting sustainability of the dairy industry as a whole.

Book Cow Care in Hindu Animal Ethics

Download or read book Cow Care in Hindu Animal Ethics written by Kenneth R. Valpey and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-02 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book provides both a broad perspective and a focused examination of cow care as a subject of widespread ethical concern in India, and increasingly in other parts of the world. In the face of what has persisted as a highly charged political issue over cow protection in India, intellectual space must be made to bring the wealth of Indian traditional ethical discourse to bear on the realities of current human-animal relationships, particularly those of humans with cows. Dharma, yoga, and bhakti paradigms serve as starting points for bringing Hindu—particularly Vaishnava Hindu—animal ethics into conversation with contemporary Western animal ethics. The author argues that a culture of bhakti—the inclusive, empathetic practice of spirituality centered in Krishna as the beloved cowherd of Vraja—can complement recently developed ethics-of-care thinking to create a solid basis for sustaining all kinds of cow care communities.

Book Air Emissions from Animal Feeding Operations

Download or read book Air Emissions from Animal Feeding Operations written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-04-07 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air Emissions from Animal Feeding Operations: Current Knowledge, Future Needs discusses the need for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to implement a new method for estimating the amount of ammonia, nitrous oxide, methane, and other pollutants emitted from livestock and poultry farms, and for determining how these emissions are dispersed in the atmosphere. The committee calls for the EPA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to establish a joint council to coordinate and oversee short - and long-term research to estimate emissions from animal feeding operations accurately and to develop mitigation strategies. Their recommendation was for the joint council to focus its efforts first on those pollutants that pose the greatest risk to the environment and public health.
