Book Global Sustainable and Healthy Ecosystems Climate and Food Systems

Download or read book Global Sustainable and Healthy Ecosystems Climate and Food Systems written by Dr. Ashok Alva and published by Partridge Publishing Singapore. This book was released on 2016-05-14 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American agriculture is highly efficient: only two percent of the population is directly involved in agricultural production yet capable of outputting an abundance of high-quality and safe food at a low price to feed the rest of the United States while also supporting robust exports and maintaining sustainability of the ecosystem and environment. But, its not enough. In Global Sustainable and Healthy Ecosystems, Climate, and Food Systems, author Dr. Ashok Alva communicates that additional strategies must be developed to increase food production and food quality as the world population increases to nine billion within the next few years. He shows how this needs to be accomplished with the available natural resources, ensuring the practices will have a minimum impact on ecosystems and the environment. Offering a look at the big-picture issues affecting ecosystems, food systems, and climate, Alva presents a compilation of up-to-date information on the major challenges the world faces in protecting the ecosystem, environment, and climate to support vibrant food systems.

Book Program Guidelines for Children with Feeding Problems

Download or read book Program Guidelines for Children with Feeding Problems written by Suzanne Evans Morris and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Information was developed primarily for use with young children with or without mental retardation who may also have neurological impairment. Many of the suggestions can be used with children with cerebral palsy. Guidelines were developed for the feeding of children who: prefer strained food over more solid food; do not want to be touched and are hypersensitive around the face and mouth; gag frequently or vomit food; refuse certain foods and throw eating tantrums; refuse to drink from a glass or cup; have poor control of jaw muscles; push food out of the mouth with tongue; cannot close or use lips to remove food from spoon; do not chew; drool profusely; or become physically tight in the mouth or throat while eating. Parents should work closely with the child's therapist or teacher to adjust to changes in eating habits as the child grows. Since such children will have individual differences, the developed program guidelines should only be used as a possible procedural outline in changing behavior. (wz).

Book The Food Fighters

Download or read book The Food Fighters written by Alexander Justice Moore and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2024-06-19 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Egger did not want to start a charity, or even volunteer at one. But after his wife dragged him out one night to serve meals on the streets of Washington, DC, Egger realized that most of what society called “charity” did more to reward the people giving their time and money than it did to liberate those on the receiving end. He set aside his career running nightclubs and vowed to come up with something better. Egger named his gritty front-line nonprofit DC Central Kitchen. Today, it is one of America’s most beloved and respected solutions to hunger and poverty. From its improbable beginnings 35 years ago, the organization has redefined the issues of food waste, unemployment, mass incarceration, school nutrition, and chronic disease through award-winning programs and a gutsy, risk-taking mindset that allowed it to hurdle one obstacle after another. Written by an organizational insider, this expanded second edition of The Food Fighters shows how DC Central Kitchen’s path-breaking approach to combating the root causes of hunger is more relevant today than ever before. Packed with practical perspectives from award-winning nonprofit professionals, inspiring first-hand accounts from survivors of homelessness and incarceration, and the exclusive insights of high-profile partners like José Andrés, Spike Mendelsohn, Craig Newmark, and Michael R. Klein, The Food Fighters equips readers to take on hunger in their own communities while challenging traditional notions of what it means to do good.

Excerpt: ...rather than the currently enforced parameters of physical characteristics such as number of cracked seeds or foreign matter. The U.S. and world agricultural commodities markets face continual change brought about by fluctuations in levels of production, domestic supplies, economic growth, and governmental influences. Producers in the United States are often faced with instances requiring access to instantaneous prevailing information on the nutrient composition of feeds. For instance, although U.S. wheat imports by China are expected to increase, imports of U.S. wheat by other major purchasers are expected to decline. The world price for wheat is high, creating a challenge in marketing this commodity. Substitution of alternative feeds on the basis of a comparison of quality and nutrient composition can bring better balance to the trade and use of many grain commodities. Additionally, livestock inventories in countries such as those of the former Soviet Union are decreasing, with a subsequent decrease in feed demand. The livestock industry in the United States and throughout the world has a direct effect on the trade of feed grains. Technological advances in the genetic engineering of plants require close monitoring of the compositional changes in grains that affect feed and its consequent market value. With the dissemination of nutrient composition information, the significant innovative improvements in barley that have occurred could be reflected in its value. The challenges brought about by continually changing circumstances in world agricultural trade can successfully be engineered and met with accurate feed analysis and thoughtful marketing strategies. Accelerated growth in the global economy over the next decade has been projected on the...
