Book Thermomechanical Fatigue Behaviour of Coated and Bare Nickel Based Superalloy Single Crystals

This book was released on 1996 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thermal-mechanical fatigue behaviour of chromium-aluminium coated [001] single crystals of AM1, a nickel-base superalloy for turbine blades, is studied using a "diamond" shape cycle from 600‡ to 1100‡C. Comparison with bare specimens does not show any significant difference in thermal-mechanical fatigue nor in isothermal low cycle fatigue at high temperature. Metallographic observations on fracture surfaces and longitudinal sections of specimens tested to fatigue life or to a definite fraction of expected life have shown that the major crack tends to initiate from casting micropores in the sub-surface area very early in bare and coated specimens, under low cycle fatigue or thermal-mechanical fatigue. But the interaction between oxidation and fatigue cracking seems to play a major role. A simple model proposed by Reuchet and Rémy has been identified for this single crystal superalloy. Its application to the life prediction under low cycle fatigue and thermal-mechanical fatigue for bare and coated single crystals with different orientations is shown.

Book Fatigue under Thermal and Mechanical Loading Mechanisms Mechanics and Modelling

Download or read book Fatigue under Thermal and Mechanical Loading Mechanisms Mechanics and Modelling written by J. Bressers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Symposium "Fatigue under Thermal and Mechanical Loading", held at Petten (The Netherlands) on May 22-24, 1995, was jointly organized by the Institute for Advanced Materials of The Joint Research Centre, E. C. , and by the Societe Fran~se de Metallurgie et de Materiaux. The fast heating and cooling cycles experienced by many high temperature components cause thermally induced stresses, which often operate in combination with mechanical loads. The resulting thermal / mechanical fatigue cycle leads to material degradation mechanisms and failure modes typical of service cycles. The growing awareness that the synergism between the combined thermal and mechanical loads can not be reproduced by means of isothermal tests, has resulted in an increasing interest in thermal and thermo-mechanical fatigue testing. This trend has been reinforced by the constant pull by industry for more performant, yet safer high temperature systems, pushing the materials to the limit of their properties. Dedicated ASTM meetings in particular have set the scene for this area of research. The proceedings of the symposium organized by D. A. Spera and D. F. Mowbray in 1975 provided a reference book on thermal fatigue which reflects the knowledge and experimental capabilities of the mid-seventies.

Book Coating Effects on Crack Growth in a Single Crystal Nickel Based Alloy During Thermo Hechanical Fatigue

Download or read book Coating Effects on Crack Growth in a Single Crystal Nickel Based Alloy During Thermo Hechanical Fatigue written by J. Bressers and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Single crystal specimens of the nickel based alloy SRR99 with [001] orientation are subjected to TMF cycling between 300‡C and 1050‡C, using a -135‡lag between temperature and mechanical strain, and various R ratios. The in-situ observation of the test specimen by means of a computer vision system during TMF testing enables the initiation of microcracks to be detected when cracks have reached lengths of approximately 30 ?m at the surface. High densities of point initiated micro-cracks are generated during the early stages of the TMF life. Crack increment measurements reveal marked differences between the growth rates of individual micro-cracks. The presence of a nickel-aluminide coating consistently reduces the TMF life, due largely to higher growth rates of the main crack in the substrate. In order to estimate the influence of initial crack distribution and density on life, a two dimensional crack shielding model is incorporated in a computer programme which is used to simulate the growth of interacting, parallel surface cracks. The effect of various parameters, including the density and the initial distribution of the microcracks, on the life spent to grow a crack to a pre-defined length, are discussed and the model predictions are compared with the experimental observations.

Book Comprehensive Structural Integrity

Download or read book Comprehensive Structural Integrity written by Ian Milne and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-07-25 with total page 4647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this major reference work is to provide a first point of entry to the literature for the researchers in any field relating to structural integrity in the form of a definitive research/reference tool which links the various sub-disciplines that comprise the whole of structural integrity. Special emphasis will be given to the interaction between mechanics and materials and structural integrity applications. Because of the interdisciplinary and applied nature of the work, it will be of interest to mechanical engineers and materials scientists from both academic and industrial backgrounds including bioengineering, interface engineering and nanotechnology. The scope of this work encompasses, but is not restricted to: fracture mechanics, fatigue, creep, materials, dynamics, environmental degradation, numerical methods, failure mechanisms and damage mechanics, interfacial fracture and nano-technology, structural analysis, surface behaviour and heart valves. The structures under consideration include: pressure vessels and piping, off-shore structures, gas installations and pipelines, chemical plants, aircraft, railways, bridges, plates and shells, electronic circuits, interfaces, nanotechnology, artificial organs, biomaterial prostheses, cast structures, mining... and more. Case studies will form an integral part of the work.
