Book A Unified Statistical Methodology for Modeling Fatigue Damage

Download or read book A Unified Statistical Methodology for Modeling Fatigue Damage written by Enrique Castillo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-02-27 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to provide a uni?ed methodology to derive models for fatigue life. This includes S-N, ?-N and crack propagation models. This is not a conventional book aimed at describing the fatigue fundamentals, but rather a book in which the basic models of the three main fatigue approaches, the stress-based, the strain-based and the fracture mechanics approaches, are contemplated from a novel and integrated point of view. On the other hand, as an alternative to the preferential attention paid to deterministic models based on the physical, phenomenological and empirical description of fatigue, their probabilistic nature is emphasized in this book, in which stochastic fatigue and crack growth models are presented. This book is the result of a long period of close collaborationbetween its two authors who, although of di?erent backgrounds, mathematical and mechanical, both have a strong sense of engineering with respect to the fatigue problem. When the authors of this book ?rst approached the fatigue ?eld in 1982 (twenty six years ago), they found the following scenario: 1. Linear, bilinear or trilinear models were frequently proposed by relevant laboratoriesandacademiccenterstoreproducetheW ̈ ohler?eld. Thiswas the case of well known institutions, which justi?ed these models based on clientrequirementsorpreferences. Thisledtotheinclusionofsuchmodels and methods as, for example, the up-and-down, in standards and o?cial practical directives (ASTM, Euronorm, etc.), which have proved to be unfortunate.

Book Integration of Statistical and Physical Models of Short Fatigue Crack Growth

Download or read book Integration of Statistical and Physical Models of Short Fatigue Crack Growth written by B. N. Cox and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The probabilistic analysis of the propagation of small fatigue cracks has been investigated. Monte Carlo simulations have been formulated that can embrace nearly all details of the micromechanics of small crack growth. They calculate the propagation of the entire, irregular crack front as it passes through a random microstructure. The simulations illuminate both the mechanics and the statistics of small crack growth. A computationally efficient probabilistic model has also been formulated as the basis of lifetime prediction in field application. The probabilistic model is sufficiently flexible to allow incorporation of the physical aspects of propagation that have been shown in the Monte Carlo simulations to be necessary for accurate predictions. In particular, the probabilistic model begins with the premise that two independent variables, for example but not necessarily the crack length and the crack shape, are required to account for the observed statistics of growth. Book Probabilistic Analysis of the Fatigue Crack Growth Based on the Application of the Monte Carlo Method to Unigrow Model

Download or read book Probabilistic Analysis of the Fatigue Crack Growth Based on the Application of the Monte Carlo Method to Unigrow Model written by S. Bogdanov and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents results obtained from the combination of the UniGrow fatigue crack growth model with Monte-Carlo simulation method. Four sets of available statistical fatigue crack growth data were used for the analysis. The material resistance to the fatigue crack propagation was modelled as a random input parameter while the geometry and loading conditions were kept deterministic. The measure of comparison was chosen to be the distribution of the number of cycles required to propagate the crack from a certain initial to the desired deterministic size. The difference between the "within specimen" and "from specimen to specimen" variability is assessed. Influence of the former on fatigue crack growth predictions is demonstrated to be negligible. It is shown that the probability distributions obtained from the numerical analysis closely resemble distributions obtained from the available experimental data.

Book Probability that the Propagation of an Undetected Fatigue Crack Will Not Cause a Structural Failure

Download or read book Probability that the Propagation of an Undetected Fatigue Crack Will Not Cause a Structural Failure written by J. R. Gebman and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The undetected propagation of a fatigue crack constitutes a significant cause of aircraft and other structural failures. To raise the structural failure load to a relatively high level, the manufacturer can divide the structure into many small elements, which significantly increases the ability of a structure to tolerate an element failure. This report presents a procedure for calculating the probability that the element has not failed, as a function of the crack propagation time and hence the crack's length. The procedure's form is so simple that computations with a desk calculator can yield reasonably accurate results. To illustrate this, the report uses data that an aircraft manufacturer developed for the structural components/elements that currently limit the service life of an existing transport aircraft.

Book Stochastic Modeling of Thermal Fatigue Crack Growth

Download or read book Stochastic Modeling of Thermal Fatigue Crack Growth written by Vasile Radu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-19 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes a systematic stochastic modeling approach for assessing thermal-fatigue crack-growth in mixing tees, based on the power spectral density of temperature fluctuation at the inner pipe surface. It shows the development of a frequency-temperature response function in the framework of single-input, single-output (SISO) methodology from random noise/signal theory under sinusoidal input. The frequency response of stress intensity factor (SIF) is obtained by a polynomial fitting procedure of thermal stress profiles at various instants of time. The method, which takes into account the variability of material properties, and has been implemented in a real-world application, estimates the probabilities of failure by considering a limit state function and Monte Carlo analysis, which are based on the proposed stochastic model. Written in a comprehensive and accessible style, this book presents a new and effective method for assessing thermal fatigue crack, and it is intended as a concise and practice-oriented guide for all undergraduate students, young scientists and researchers dealing with probabilistic assessment of structural integrity.

Book Probabilistic fracture mechanics and reliability

Download or read book Probabilistic fracture mechanics and reliability written by J.W. Provan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of the 80's there has been an increasing need for analytic and numerical techniques, based on a thorough understanding of microstructural processes, that express in a manner suitable for practicing engineers the reliability of components and structures that are being subjected to degradation situations. Such situations fall within the framework offracture mechanics, fatigue, corrosion fatigue and pitting corrosion. Luckily, such techniques are now being developed and it was felt timely to combine in one volume reports by the leaders in this field who are currently making great strides towards solving these problems. Hence the idea of this monograph was born and I am pleased to be associated both with it and the contributors whose chapters are included in this volume. A very large part of the credit for this monograph must go to the authors who have taken time out from their busy schedules to prepare their submissions. They have all worked diligently over the last few months in order to get their manuscripts to me on time and I sincerely thank them for their help throughout the preparation of this volume.

Book Probabilistic Modeling for Corrosion Fatigue Crack Growth

Download or read book Probabilistic Modeling for Corrosion Fatigue Crack Growth written by Chitang Li and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to integrate environmental (thermal and chemical) considerations and probabilistic methods into a life prediction model for corrosion fatigue crack growth. The approach is illustrated through simplified modeling of aluminum alloys with the aid of the MODGRO program for fatigue analysis. Damage is modeled as a stage II fatigue crack by a well-accepted power law. A superposition model is adapted to take into account corrosion effects, and temperature dependance is modeled as an Arrhenius formulation. The cumulative distribution functions for the underlying random variables are assumed, but reflected realistic data. The influence of temperature, of random variables, and sequencing effect of loading spectrum on fatigue life are then investigated.

Book A Comparison of Predictions From Probabilistic Crack Growth Models Inferred From Virkler s Data

Download or read book A Comparison of Predictions From Probabilistic Crack Growth Models Inferred From Virkler s Data written by RJ. Cross and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The significant variability observed in fatigue crack growth experiments requires application of probabilistic modeling techniques to fatigue analyses. In this work, philosophical and practical concerns for probabilistic modeling are discussed. Several probabilistic fatigue models are derived from the Virkler data and then used to make predictions under a different loading condition. This comparison of predictions demonstrates their sensitivity to the choice of model. In this effort a method for inference of random process parameters and corresponding confidence limits from highly statistically dependent observations is developed.

Book Random Fatigue

Download or read book Random Fatigue written by K. Sobczyk and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years fatigue has been a significant and difficult problem for engineers, especially for those who design structures such as aircraft, bridges, pressure vessels, and cranes. Fatigue of engineering materials is commonly regarded as an important deterioration process and a principal mode of failure for various structural and mechanical systems. This book presents a unified approach to stochastic modeling of the fatigue phenomenon, particularly the fatigue crack growth process. The main approaches to construction of these stochastic models are presented to show their methodological consistency and potential usefulness in engineering practice. The analyses contained in this work should also inspire the development of new approaches for designing and performing fatigue experiments.
