Book The Effects of Slip Character and Crack Closure on the Growth of Small Fatigue Cracks in Titanium aluminium Alloys

Download or read book The Effects of Slip Character and Crack Closure on the Growth of Small Fatigue Cracks in Titanium aluminium Alloys written by James M. Larsen and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was performed to study the effects of slip character and crack closure on the propagation of small fatigue cracks in titanium- aluminum alloys. The materials examined were solution-treated Ti-4Al and Ti-8Al, as well as aged Ti-8Al. The propagation of naturally initiated surface cracks of depths as small as 25 micrometers was compared with the behavior of large through-thickness cracks. An extensometer was used to monitor crack closure throughout the large crack tests, and the closure behavior of the small cracks was measured using a computerized laser interferometric displacement gage having a displacement resolution of 0.01 micrometer. The measurements of crack closure were used to compute an effective stress intensity factor range. In all three alloys and for all test conditions, which included a range of stress levels and stress ratios, small cracks propagated faster than large cracks subjected to an equivalent Delta K, and the small cracks propagated under conditions that were significantly below the large-crack threshold, Delta K(th). Although the character and distribution of slip in Ti-Al alloys may have a dramatic influence on fatigue crack initiation and on the propagation of large cracks, this effect was minimal for small cracks.

Book Fatigue Crack Propagation in Titanium Alloys

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Propagation in Titanium Alloys written by A. J. McEvily and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report summarizes the research accomplishments in the first year's program of a study of fatigue crack growth in Ti-6Al-4V alloys. Fatigue crack growth rates have been determined in the mean threshold regions, and data for the effect of mean stress on the threshold level indicate that the dependency may be interpretable in terms of a constrant crack opening criterion. Additional work on high cycle fatigue indicates that there are two regions for the Coffin-Manson relation and that cyclically developed residual stresses may be responsible for this behavior.

Book Advances in Research on the Strength and Fracture of Materials

Download or read book Advances in Research on the Strength and Fracture of Materials written by D. M. R. Taplin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 747 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Research on the Strength and Fracture of Materials: Volume 2Bs—Fatigue contains the proceedings of the Fourth International Conference on Fracture, held at the University of Waterloo, Canada, in June 1977. The papers review the state of the art with respect to fracture in a wide range of materials such as metals and alloys. This volume is comprised of 85 chapters and opens by discussing the metallographic aspects of fatigue in pearlitic structures and the dislocation diffusion mechanism of fatigue crack formation. The reader is then introduced to localized plastic deformation and fracture in slip bands during fatigue loading of age hardening aluminum alloys; the microstructure of fatigue fracture surfaces in titanium; mechanisms of liquid metal embrittlement, stress corrosion cracking, and corrosion-fatigue; and the fatigue behavior of macroscopic slag inclusions in steam turbo-generator rotor steels. A model for fatigue crack initiation in polycrystalline solids is also described. This monograph will be a useful resource for metallurgists, materials scientists, and structural and mechanical engineers.

Book Load Interaction Effects on Fatigue Crack Growth in Ti 6Al 4V Alloy

Download or read book Load Interaction Effects on Fatigue Crack Growth in Ti 6Al 4V Alloy written by Robert Peh-ying Wei and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of delay, retardation in the rate of fatigue crack growth, produced by load interactions in variable amplitude loading, on the accurate prediction of fatigue lives of engineering structures is discussed. The effects of a broad range of loading variables on delay in fatigue crack growth at room temperature are examined for a mill annealed Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The results are used to estimate crack growth behavior under programmed loads.

Book Fatigue Crack Propagation in Ti Alloys

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Propagation in Ti Alloys written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of microstructure, slip behavior, and gaseous environment on the fatique crack propagation of Ti alloys has been investigated. Large grain or single crystal material has been used extensively in order to ensure that the crack-tip plasticity is smaller than the scale of the microstructure. As a result, extensive Stage I crack propagation occurs. The experimental relationships between crack-tip plasticity, orientation of the crack plane to the stress axis, fractography, and the resulting fatigue crack growth behavior is presented. Several Ti alloys are examined in lab air, dry helium, or hydrogen environments: beta-phase Ti-40V, metastable beta Ti-27V, and Ti-30V, alpha-phase Ti-4Al, and the alpha-beta alloy, Ti-8Al-1Mo-lV. The behavior of the beta Ti alloys can be analyzed primarily in terms of crack advance by an intersecting slip process resulting from flow on at least two active slip systems. In contrast, the mechanism for Stage I fatigue in alpha and alpha + beta Ti alloys appears to be dominated by basal slip and strongly influenced by environment. Aspects of the cyclic stress-strain behavior of beta and alpha + beta Ti alloys are also reported. In addition, strengthening of Ti alloys by eutectoid decomposition is briefly discussed. (Author).

Book Fatigue Crack Growth Threshold Concept and Test Results for Al and Ti Alloys

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Growth Threshold Concept and Test Results for Al and Ti Alloys written by G. Marci and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fact that fatigue crack propagation (FCP) rates approach zero asymptotically as the fracture mechanics loading parameter ?K decreases toward certain limiting values is the reason for the scientific interest in these so-called 'threshold' values. In respect to the practical use of these 'limiting values', the author divides them into two groups, namely in 'non-propagation conditions' ?Kth and in a material property 'FCP-threshold' ?KT. It is shown that ?KT must be an integral part in the functional correlation between FCP-rates and the cyclic loading conditions expressed in ?Keff. The experimental determination of ?Kth on six Al-alloys and four Ti-compressor disk alloys show that ?KT exists for all the alloys investigated. The effect of temperature on ?KT was investigated on one Ti 6Al 4V- and one Ti 8Al 1V 1Mo disk material at room temperature (RT) and 260°C and at RT, 260°C and 360°C, respectively. No temperature effect on ?KT was found for the temperature range investigated.

Book Advances in Understanding the Fatigue Behavior of Materials

Download or read book Advances in Understanding the Fatigue Behavior of Materials written by Tirumalai S. Srivatsan and published by Trans Tech Publications Ltd. This book was released on 2008-03-07 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special-topic book consists of a collection of technical papers assembled under the rubric of “Advances in Understanding the Fatigue Behavior of Materials”. The focus of “Fatigue Behavior of Materials” centers on the changes in properties that occur upon applying cyclic loads. Following its recognition and increasing importance during the latter half of the nineteenth century, this branch of study has focused upon the study and rationalization of the engineering approaches that are commonly used to design against the initiation and/or propagation of the fatigue damage which would otherwise culminate in catastrophic failure.
