Book Fatigue Crack Growth Failure and Lifing Analyses for Metallic Aircraft Structures and Components

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Growth Failure and Lifing Analyses for Metallic Aircraft Structures and Components written by Russell Wanhill and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-19 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a concise discussion of fatigue crack growth (FCG) failure and lifing analysis methods for metallic aircraft structures and components. After a reasonably concise historical review, surveys are made of (i) the importance of fatigue for aircraft structural failures and the sources of fatigue nucleation and cracking, (ii) contemporary FCG lifing methods, and (iii) the Quantitative Fractography (QF) required for determining the actual FCG behaviour. These surveys are followed by the main part of the book, which is a discussion, using case histories, of the applicabilities of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) and non-LEFM methods for analysing service fatigue failures and full- and sub-scale test results. This discussion is derived primarily from the experiences of the Defence Science and Technology Group in Melbourne, Australia, and the Netherlands Aerospace Centre, Marknesse, the Netherlands.

Book Concepts in Fail safe Design of Aircraft Structures

Download or read book Concepts in Fail safe Design of Aircraft Structures written by David Broek and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to obtain an appraisal of the state of the art of fail-safe design, the author made an investory of fail-safe design methods applied by various aerospace companies and of research work relevant to the engineering approach of fatigue-crack propagation and residual strength. This memorandum is based on information from discussions with personnel of several companies and research laboratories, with the main emphasis on plane stress and transitional fracture behavior. The memorandum presents a brief description of the general approach to the fail-safe problem, an analysis of several of the existing methods that use this approach, including their shortcomings, and a summary of the data required for a good fail-safe design. A specific approach proposed for the presentation in MIL-HDBK-5 of data pertinent to the fail-safe design concept is evaluated in terms of its applicability to that concept. (Author).

Book Fatigue Crack Propagation Analysis of Aircraft Structures

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Propagation Analysis of Aircraft Structures written by Larry Don Newsome and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is a comparative study of aircraft fatigue life calculations based upon crack propagation and upon cumulative damage. The stress concentration factor, which supplies sufficient geometric information for Miner's Law of cumulative damage, is found to not completely specify the geometry for the crack propagation approach. Effects on fatigue life of variations in initial crack length, plate width, hole size, and hole geometry for the same stress concentration factor have been investigated; also both ordered and random load histories were used to compare the two approaches. Complete FORTRAN computer program input documentation for the IBM 360/67 system has been included as an appendix to enable this thesis to serve as a user's manual for CRACK'S II, an Air Force crack propagation program for aircraft fatigue damage. Book Advances in Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics Analyses for Metallic Aircraft Structures

Download or read book Advances in Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics Analyses for Metallic Aircraft Structures written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews some of the advances that have been made in stress analyses of cracked aircraft components, in the understanding of the fatigue and fatigue-crack growth process, and in the prediction of residual strength of complex aircraft structures with widespread fatigue damage. Finite-element analyses of cracked metallic structures are now used to determine accurate stress-intensity factors for cracks at structural details. Observations of small-crack behavior at open and rivet-loaded holes and the development of small-crack theory has lead to the prediction of stress-life behavior for components with stress concentrations under aircraft spectrum loading. Fatigue-crack growth under simulated aircraft spectra can now be predicted with the crack-closure concept. Residual strength of cracked panels with severe out-of-plane deformations (buckling) in the presence of stiffeners and multiple-site damage can be predicted with advanced elastic-plastic finite-element analyses and the critical crack-tip-opening angle (CTOA) fracture criterion. These advances are helping to assure continued safety of aircraft structures.Newman, J. Book Structural Integrity Analysis And Verification for Aircraft Structures Volume 2 Effects Of Compressive Loading On The Fatigue Crack Growth Rates Of 7075 T651 And 2024 T3 Aluminum Alloys

Download or read book Structural Integrity Analysis And Verification for Aircraft Structures Volume 2 Effects Of Compressive Loading On The Fatigue Crack Growth Rates Of 7075 T651 And 2024 T3 Aluminum Alloys written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to determine the effects of constant amplitude high compressive stresses on the fatigue life of 7O75-T651 and 2024-T3 aluminum alloys. This project consisted of three components: finite element modeling/analysis, generation of fatigue crack growth data for AFGROW modifications, and verification testing. An elastic-plastic finite element analysis program (ZIP2D) was used to determine the stress field in the crack plane for the different testing conditions. Fatigue crack growth data from center-notched, through-cracked panels were collected for both alloys at several loads and stress ratios, and these data were used to modify tabular crack growth data for the AGROW program. Center-notched and surface-cracked specimens were then tested to verify AFGROW predictions (with updated tabular data) for crack shape and fatigue lifetimes.
