Book excerpt: Basalt fibers have recently been introduced as a promising alternative to the existing fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) family. The mechanical properties of basalt FRP (BFRP) bars are, generally, better than those of glass FRP (GFRP) bars. However, they are still lower than those of carbon FRP (CFRP) bars. Also BFRP bars have now been developed that have a higher modulus of elasticity than typical GRFP bars. Only a limited amount of research is available on BFRP bars in structural concrete applications and there is no information on the performance of prestressed basalt bars in reinforced concrete elements subjected to fatigue loading. Most studies that are available deal only with the flexural behaviour of concrete beams reinforced with non- prestressed and prestressed GFRP and CFRP bars under monotonic and fatigue loading. This thesis presents an experimental study of the flexural behaviour of concrete beams reinforced with non-prestressed and prestressed basalt bars under monotonic and fatigue loading and compares these beam fatigue results with the fatigue behaviour of similar machined basalt rebars tested under fatigue loading in air. Sixteen beams with dimensions of (2400x 300x150mm) and thirteen BFRP bare rebars were tested. The parameters that varied were the level of prestress of the bars (0%, 20% and 40% of their static tension capacity) and the fatigue load ranges. The experimental findings showed a difference in the long life fatigue strength between the beams prestressed to 40% 20% and 0% of the bar strength with the beams with the bars prestressed to 40% of the bar strength showing a higher fatigue strength than of those prestressed to 0% and 20%. For 40% and 20 % prestressed beams, there is no benefit in fatigue performance above 20% and 13% of the ultimate capacity of the beams a level at which calculations showed that the remaining prestress did not close cracks at the minimum load in the fatigue load cycle. When compared on the basis of load range versus cycles to failure, the data for the three beam types fell onto a single curve at load levels where the remaining prestress after fatigue creep relaxation no longer closed the crack at the minimum load.

Abstract: ABSTRACT OF THESIS ENTITLED Full-range Behaviour of Concrete Beams Partially Prestressed with Unbonded Tendons submitted by TSO Karmen for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in February 2007 External prestressing can be applied to both new construction and retrofitting of existing reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. The behaviour of prestressed concrete structures with unbonded tendons differs significantly from that of those with bonded tendons after the working stage. To assess the safety of such structures, it is necessary to carry out full-range analysis, with particular attention to the post-peak behaviour. This thesis presents the results of an experimental study of externally prestressed concrete beams with either conventional or non-conventional tendons, which were tested to failure. The specimens tested all had T-sections prestressed by two external tendons with one on each side. Two types of tendon were used, namely 7-wire steel strands of 10.5 mm diameter and aramid fibre reinforced polymer (AFRP) tendons of 13.5 mm diameter. Unlike the steel tendons, the fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) tendons are not prone to corrosion. However, the prestressing operations for FRP tendons had to be modified to suit. In the experiments, different factors were taken into consideration. They included the level of prestressing force, concrete strength, area of non-prestressed steel reinforcement and partial prestressing ratio. - 1 - The full-range behaviour of partially prestressed concrete with either external unbonded steel or fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) tendons was significantly affected by second-order effects, as demonstrated in the strain profiles of top and bottom non- prestressed reinforcement and the variations of curvature and neutral axis depth. During the investigation of tendon force, the friction loss at deviator was found to be much greater than the friction loss estimated from the coefficients of friction given by the manufacturers. The equivalent coefficients of friction of steel and AFRP tendon were studied. Lastly, by using various ductility and deformability indices, the ductility or deformability of partially prestressed concrete with external unbonded tendons were investigated. The most suitable ductility or deformability index is proposed. Work on preventing sexual harassment is an area that has recently garnered a lot of attention, especially around education and programs that go beyond the standard anti-sexual harassment trainings often used to comply with legal requirements. On April 20-21, 2021, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine hosted the workshop Developing Evaluation Metrics for Sexual Harassment Prevention Efforts. The workshop explored approaches and strategies for evaluating and measuring the effectiveness of sexual harassment interventions being implemented at higher education institutions and research and training sites, in order to assist institutions in transforming promising ideas into evidence-based best practices. Workshop participants also addressed methods, metrics, and measures that could be used to evaluate sexual harassment prevention efforts that lead to change in the organizational climate and culture and/or a change in behavior among community members. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussion of the workshop.

Each study represents one phase of an extensive research program conducted at Lehigh University and sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration, and the Reinforced Concrete Research Council. The four areas of study are: the effect of stress gradient on the probable fatigue life of plain concrete, as related to the compression block of prestressed concrete flexural members; the probable fatigue life of seven-wire prestressing strand under repeated loading of either constant or varied magnitude; the probable fatigue life of prestressed concrete flexural members, as limited by the fatigue failure of the prestressing strand; and the susceptibility of prestressed concrete flexural members to fatigue failure in shear. This report provides guidance to structural engineers faced with the design or analysis of prestressed concrete flexural members and to research engineers who are seeking to extend the knowledge of structural behavior as affected by repeated loading.
