Book Fatigue and Fracture of Fibre Metal Laminates

Download or read book Fatigue and Fracture of Fibre Metal Laminates written by René Alderliesten and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-19 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contributes to the field of hybrid technology, describing the current state of knowledge concerning the hybrid material concept of laminated metallic and composite sheets for primary aeronautical structural applications. It is the only book to date on fatigue and fracture of fibre metal laminates (FMLs). The first section of the book provides a general background of the FML technology, highlighting the major FML types developed and studied over the past decades in conjunction with an overview of industrial developments based on filed patents. In turn, the second section discusses the mechanical response to quasi-static loading, together with the fracture phenomena during quasi-static and cyclic loading. To consider the durability aspects related to strength justification and certification of primary aircraft structures, the third section discusses thermal aspects related to FMLs and their mechanical response to various environmental and acoustic conditions.

Book Fatigue Damage strength Relationships in Composite Laminates Volume 1

Download or read book Fatigue Damage strength Relationships in Composite Laminates Volume 1 written by Kenneth L. Reifsnider and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is Vol. I of a 2-part final report on the activities which were conducted under Contract No. F33615-81-3225. The general objective of this program was to investigate the precise nature of the damage events caused by cyclic (fatigue) loading of composite laminates that are directly related to fracture of those laminates, to develop a conceptual understanding of how those damage events reduce the residual strength of the laminates, and to determine how the collective damage condition following long-term cyclic loading precipitates the final fracture event. The program was conducted in four phases: (1) the development of fatigue damage during long-term cyclic loading was investigated in such a way that the damage events which occur quite late in the fatigue life of the material, just prior to fracture, were identified and characterized; (2) the special contribution and nature of fiber fracture was investigated; (3) the nature of the collective damage condition which precipitates the fracture event under long-term fatigue loading was investigated; (4) a philosophy of fracture in composite laminates following severe damage development due to cyclic loading was developed. A wide variety of destructive and nondestructive experimental evaluation schemes were used in the program, and several analytical efforts were conducted to support the experimental activities.

Book Residual Strength of Composite Laminates Subjected to Tensile Compressive Fatigue Loading

Download or read book Residual Strength of Composite Laminates Subjected to Tensile Compressive Fatigue Loading written by A. Rotem and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The residual strengths of graphite epoxy (T300/934) laminates, in tension and in compression, were measured after exposure to tension-compression fatigue loading (R = -1). No direct correlation was found between remaining residual strengths and percentage of average fatigue life. However, a correlation scheme, based on a cumulative damage model and a stiffness change of the material, was developed for the individual specimen under test. This scheme predicts that strength will begin to degrade at about 60 to 80% of the fatigue life of the specimen, depending on the laminate structure. By monitoring stiffness change during fatigue, it was possible to predict the fatigue life of each individual specimen, and to terminate fatigue loading at some preset value of stiffness degradation before failure. It was found that only the strength of the final failure mode was degraded (that is, tension or compression), while the strength in the opposite direction did not change until almost the final failure. It was concluded that monitoring stiffness of a laminated structure will permit more effective use of the laminate and avoid premature failure.

Book Fatigue of Notched Fiber Composite Laminates

Download or read book Fatigue of Notched Fiber Composite Laminates written by SV. Kulkarni and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes the analytical/experimental correlation study performed to develop an understanding of the behavior of notched boron/epoxy laminates subjected to tension/tension fatigue loading. The static failure analysis of notched laminates used herein treats the following modes of failure: axial cracking in the load direction, and transverse cracking across the specimen. The "mechanistic wearout" fatigue analysis uses this static failure model and embodies the concept that material properties in the notch region are continually changing with cyclic loading and that, if these properties are known at a given time, they could be used in the static failure analysis to compute residual strength and preferred mode of crack propagation. In order to verify the fatigue model, an experimental program of limited scope was undertaken to obtain boron/epoxy lamina static and fatigue data (longitudinal and transverse tension and in-plane shear), unnotched [02/±45]s laminate static data, and notched [02/±45]s laminate static and fatigue data. Laminate fatigue behavior was determined from lamina fatigue data, and analysis predictions were compared with the notched-laminate fatigue data. The specific phenomena of interest are the initiation of fatigue damage and its growth as a function of load cycles, fatigue life and mode of failure, and the residual strength after a predetermined number of cycles and the corresponding mode of failure. Certain predicted phenomena such as the increase in residual strength after fatigue loading and both axial and transverse damage growth were observed experimentally. However, correlation of theory and experiment was hampered by the following factors: delamination of the 0-deg surface layers in the region of the longitudinal projection of the notch diameter, lack of statistically significant data base for lamina fatigue properties in general, and absence of lamina axial compression fatigue data in particular. The principal deficiency appears to be the lack of a capability to predict growth of delaminations. Therefore, the interplay of stacking sequence and various failure modes needs to be investigated analytically and experimentally in detail.
