Book Fatigue and Fracture of Titanium Aluminides

Download or read book Fatigue and Fracture of Titanium Aluminides written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Future tactical aircraft engine designs depend heavily on advanced materials technology to meet thrust-to-weight and durability goals. Several types of materials currently under development are candidates for use in these advanced engines, including intermetallic titanium aluminides. Titanium aluminide alloys offer low density, high specific strength, and elevated temperature capabilities. If the materials are used in major structural and rotating components, these properties could significantly increase-engine thrust-to-weight ratio. Monolithic titanium aluminides are currently being evaluated for static components where they offer strength and stiffness advantages at temperatures above conventional titanium alloy capability.

Book Fatigue of Beta Processed and Beta Heat treated Titanium Alloys

Download or read book Fatigue of Beta Processed and Beta Heat treated Titanium Alloys written by Russell Wanhill and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-28 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication reviews most of the available literature on the fatigue properties of β annealed Ti-6Al-4V and titanium alloys with similar microstructures. The focus is on β processed and β heat-treated alloys because β annealed Ti-6Al-4V has been selected for highly loaded and fatigue-critical structures, including the main wing-carry-through bulkheads and vertical tail stubs, of advanced high-performance military aircraft. An important aspect of the review is a concise survey of fatigue life assessment methods and the required types of fatigue data. This survey provides the background to recommendations for further research, especially on the fatigue behaviour of β annealed Ti-6Al-4V under realistic fatigue load histories, including the essential topic of short/small fatigue crack growth. Such research is required for independent fatigue life assessments that conform to the aircraft manufacturer’s design requirements, and also for life reassessments that most probably will have to be made during the service life of the aircraft.

Book The Role of Microstructure in Determining Fracture Toughness and Fatigue Properties of High Strength Titanium Alloys

Download or read book The Role of Microstructure in Determining Fracture Toughness and Fatigue Properties of High Strength Titanium Alloys written by Albert Tobin and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High strength titanium alloys have found extensive application in critical aircraft components because of their high strength/density and generally good engineering properties. The ability to predict the response of the material to the growth of subcritical cracks is important because of the risk of catastrophic failures in aircraft. This review examines the general theory of fatigue and flaw growth and relates these to fracture mechanics parameters. A general review of the physical metallurgy of titanium alloys is presented with primary emphasis placed on Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-6Al-6V-2Sn. Emphasis is placed on the roles of microstructural, chemical, and textural variations in controlling the fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth rate. (Modified author abstract).
