Book Call The Midwife

Download or read book Call The Midwife written by Jennifer Worth and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2009-05-14 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating slice of social history - Jennifer Worth's tales of being a midwife in 1950s London, now a major BBC TV series. Jennifer Worth came from a sheltered background when she became a midwife in the Docklands in the 1950s. The conditions in which many women gave birth just half a century ago were horrifying, not only because of their grimly impoverished surroundings, but also because of what they were expected to endure. But while Jennifer witnessed brutality and tragedy, she also met with amazing kindness and understanding, tempered by a great deal of Cockney humour. She also earned the confidences of some whose lives were truly stranger, more poignant and more terrifying than could ever be recounted in fiction. Attached to an order of nuns who had been working in the slums since the 1870s, Jennifer tells the story not only of the women she treated, but also of the community of nuns (including one who was accused of stealing jewels from Hatton Garden) and the camaraderie of the midwives with whom she trained. Funny, disturbing and incredibly moving, Jennifer's stories bring to life the colourful world of the East End in the 1950s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding an epic story’s key belief patterns can reveal community-level values, the nature of familial bonds, and how divine and human concerns jockey for power and influence. These foundational motifs remain understudied as they relate to South Asian folk legends, but are nonetheless crucial in shaping the values exemplified by such stories’ central heroes and heroines. In Hidden Paradigms, anthropologist Brenda E.F. Beck describes The Legend of Ponnivala, an oral epic from rural South India. Recorded in 1965, this story was sung to a group of village enthusiasts by a respected pair of local bards. This grand legend took more than thirty-eight hours to complete over eighteen nights. Bringing this unique example of Tamil culture to the attention of an international audience, Beck compares this virtually unknown South Indian epic to five other culturally significant works – the Ojibwa Nanabush cycle, the Mahabharata, an Icelandic Saga, the Bible, and the Epic of Gilgamesh – establishing this foundational Tamil story as one that engages with the same universal human struggles and themes present throughout the world. Copiously illustrated, Hidden Paradigms provides a fresh example of the power of comparative thinking, offering a humanistic complement to scientific reasoning.

Book The Art of Anthonie Palamedes 1602 1673

Palamedes was active in Delft, one of the most important cities during the Dutch Golden Age, alongside Vermeer. Unlike his famous compatriot Vermeer, Anthonie Palamedes was a successful painter. He was socially acceptable, was recognized and appreciated by his colleagues, painted hundreds of pictures and achieved financial success that allowed him to live comfortably. Palamedes is therefore the embodiment of the successful painter in the Dutch "Golden Age". The book includes a biography of the painter as well as a systematic and comparative iconographical and stylistic study of his work, with an attached critical oeuvre catalogue.
