Book Fateful Events of 1947

Download or read book Fateful Events of 1947 written by Manmath Nath Das and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1947 saw the demise of the British Indian Empire and the emergence of India as an independent country. It also witnessed dubious endeavour on part of the departing rulers in partitioning a sub-continent into India and Pakistan. Side by side, their deliberate game to balkanise India by keeping some princely States independent was too obvious. The year was full of fateful events since the surgery of separation was an unusual phenomenon, causing immense blood letting. Compressed between the natural demand for national unity and an artificially engineered two-nation theory, the desperate British went in for a comprehensive conspiracy to take advantage of the continuing communal civil war for achieving their sinister design of 'Divine and Quit'. This book, constructed from original source-material including confidential documents of some of the British Viceroys and officers as well as some letters of Winston Charchill to Muhammad Ali Jinnah deals with the intricacies of the problems which overwhelmed the greatest men of India like inexorable forces of Time. Everybody played his role and played it well against internal and external forces to preserve the unity of a great nation and an ancient country. But, Time was against India's formidable patriots who had to suffer the agony of seeing their life's hopes disappear in disappointment.

Book Office Hours

Download or read book Office Hours written by H. N. Hirsch and published by Quid Pro Books. This book was released on 2016-01-04 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A personal look inside the black box of American higher education. Even a cursory glance at today’s headlines reveals that higher education is in crisis. Tuition outpaces inflation, states slash budgets, graduation rates decline, and technology threatens to reshape everything. Universities continue to crank out new PhDs, but many will become poorly paid members of a secondary, adjunct labor force teaching most of today’s college courses. Scholars lucky enough to be on the tenure track must publish more and more, while students at large universities sit in ever larger lectures, seldom interacting with professors. Yet every year, thousands of applicants from the world over apply to America’s most prestigious colleges and universities, and students and their families continue to spend huge sums on college. What are colleges and universities really like—from the inside? What do we do wrong, and what are we doing right? What is it like to be a professor and administrator at one of America’s leading educational institutions? This memoir asks these questions, in a very personal way. “This is the story of a serious scholar finding his vocation, his students and his gratifications, amidst the near-impossibility of such discoveries in higher education today. The writing is beautiful and the accounts of times, places and institutions are alternatively moving, penetrating and provocative.” — Wendy Brown Class of 1936 First Professor of Political Science University of California–Berkeley “Written in lyrical and sparkling prose, Harry Hirsch’s Office Hours is, on the one hand, an intimate and insightful memoir of a Jewish gay man’s trajectory from a Chicago boyhood to Princeton, Harvard, and beyond. On the other hand, it’s a penetrating critical analysis of college and university approaches to education by an accomplished professor and dean (and dedicated teacher) who knows of what he speaks. Office Hours draws back the curtain on a major way of American life—the academic way—revealing at once the bright spots and the rotten ones. It should be read by every dean, professor, and adjunct, and by anyone involved in an academic career or contemplating one.” — Priscilla Long Author of The Writer's Portable Mentor and Crossing Over: Poems

Book Liquid Surveillance

Download or read book Liquid Surveillance written by Zygmunt Bauman and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-04-03 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Today the smallest details of our daily lives are tracked and traced more closely than ever before, and those who are monitored often cooperate willingly with the monitors. From London and New York to New Delhi, Shanghai and Rio de Janeiro, video cameras are a familiar and accepted sight in public places. Air travel now commonly involves devices such as body-scanners and biometric checks that have proliferated in the wake of 9/11. And every day Google and credit-card issuers note the details of our habits, concerns and preferences, quietly prompting customized marketing strategies with our active, all too often zealous cooperation. In today’s liquid modern world, the paths of daily life are mobile and flexible. Crossing national borders is a commonplace activity and immersion in social media increasingly ubiquitous. Today’s citizens, workers, consumers and travellers are always on the move but often lacking certainty and lasting bonds. But in this world where spaces may not be fixed and time is boundless, our perpetual motion does not go unnoticed. Surveillance spreads in hitherto unimaginable ways, responding to and reproducing the slippery nature of modern life, seeping into areas where it once had only marginal sway. In this book the surveillance analysis of David Lyon meets the liquid modern world so insightfully dissected by Zygmunt Bauman. Is a dismal future of moment-by-moment monitoring closing in, or are there still spaces of freedom and hope? How do we realize our responsibility for the human beings before us, often lost in discussions of data and categorization? Dealing with questions of power, technology and morality, this book is a brilliant analysis of what it means to be watched – and watching – today.

Book The Letters

Download or read book The Letters written by John Greenleaf Whittier and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1975 with total page 766 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These letters of a man deeply concerned about his country, directly involved in political action, and torn, as the Civil War approached, by the conflict between his abolitionist zeal and his Quaker pacifism--letters here collected for the first time and many of them hitherto unpublished--shatter the stereotype of Whittier as "the good gray poet." The many letters to such figures as John Quincy Adams, Charles Sumner, and William Lloyd Garrison form a detailed record of the abolitionist movement from its inception to its merging with the Free Soil party in the 1850s. The first two volumes reproduce all the extant letters from 1828 to 1860, with full annotations. The last volume is selective, excluding several thousand perfunctory items and including only the historically or biographically interesting letters of the last three decades of the poet's life.

Download or read book Abraham written by Joseph Blenkinsopp and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this discursive commentary Joseph Blenkinsopp explores the story of Abraham -- iconic ancestor of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam -- as told in Genesis 11-25. Presented in continuous discussion rather than in verse-by-verse form, Blenkinsopp’s commentary focuses on the literary and theological artistry of the narrative as a whole. Blenkinsopp discussses a range of issues raised in the Abraham saga, including confirmation of God’s promises, Isaac’s sacrifice and the death of Jesus, and Abraham’s other beloved son, Ishmael. Each chapter has a section called “Filling in the Gaps,” which probes some of the vast amount of Jewish, Christian, and Islamic commentary that the basic Genesis text has generated through the ages. In an epilogue Blenkinsopp looks at Abraham in early Christianity and expresses his own views, as a Christian, on Abraham. Readers of Blenkinsopp’s Abraham: The Story of a Life will surely come away with a deeper, richer understanding of this seminal ancient figure.

Book Socialism and Religion

Download or read book Socialism and Religion written by Vincent Geoghegan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-03-29 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decade philosophers and political theorists have increasingly pondered the role of religion in a modern secular society, and of the possible value of religion as a resource for contemporary thinking. The global resurgence of a new religious politics – graphically symbolised by 9/11 - has added a new urgency to this project; how is religion to be integrated, and if necessary contested, in such a time? As this study shows, the desire to integrate religion into a ‘progressive’ politics is not new. Providing a comprehensive analysis of the Common Wealth movement, this work seeks to bring together for the first time the religious and political commitments of four of the leading thinkers in the movement, bringing to light the significance of the relationships between them. This study examines at four interwar British radicals – the philosopher John Macmurray, the novelist and sexual theorist Kenneth Ingram, the Science Fiction writer Olaf Stapledon, and the Liberal M.P. Richard Acland – and examines their attempts to develop a socialism that whilst defending the achievements of the secular age was also sensitive to the virtues of religious traditions. Thus it considers Macmurray’s attempt to draw on the seemingly antagonistic traditions of Marxism and Christianity, Ingram’s long struggle to develop a Christian response to ‘deviant’ sexual behaviour, Stapledon’s exploration of a non-Christian religious spirit, and Acland’s journey from liberal atheist to Christian socialist. It then follows the activities of all four in the radical political movement founded by Acland in the midst of the Second World War, Common Wealth, particularly focusing on the positions they took in the serious battles over the function of religion that convulsed the leadership of this body. This work will be of great interest to scholars of political theory, religious studies, social and political thought.

Book Contemporary American Jewelry Design

Download or read book Contemporary American Jewelry Design written by Ettagale Blauer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Phenomenon of Studio Goldsmithing When the history of art in the 1980s is written, much of it will be etched in gold. This is the time of the contemporary goldsmith, an artist who chooses to work in precious metals rather than oils or marble. The contemporary jeweler-as-artist has only recently become a re cognized force. With rare exceptions, the whole field is little more than thirty years old. But it is only within the past fifteen years that these jewelers have entered the jewelry mainstream. The phenomenon of contemporary goldsmithing embraces an eclectic group of artists, each with a unique vision, each taking a per sonal path to jewelry producing. They have as little relationship to the typical, mass-produced jewelry as a champagne maker has to a bottler of orange soda. They approach a piece of art, not a piece of metal. The work is personal and a perfect expression of the "back to the land" movement that spawned it. Many of these goldsmiths were looking not merely for a way to make a living but for a way to make a life that was worthy of living. Running a business while trying to remain a creative metalsmith at the same time is the ongoing challenge. The jeweler-artists have solved or resolved these often conflicting needs in slightly different ways and in a beautiful variety of techniques and styles. Their meth ods, their growth, and their work are discussed here.
