Book excerpt: When Craig's high school buddy suggests a road trip, Craig knows its a bad idea. Bryan is out for a good time, no matter the cost, and he has his sights set on Craig's dad's van for the journey. As Bryan assembles a group of friends for the van, Craig does his best to predict what could go wrong - a speeding ticket, cigarette smell in the car, running out of snacks, getting into arguments. It all feels such an enormous responsibility to him, and his friends don't seem to share the same outlook he does - except the beautiful Hailey, who joins them on the trip. But Craig cannot anticipate what's about to happen to them all, or indeed the world, as a worldwide emergency changes everything. He will stop at nothing to get home, even when his friends become unpredictable - or become enemies. He also doesn't foresee or understand the biggest responsibility of all - a strange gift he discovers that leaves him questioning his sanity and the course of the future...and the past.

Book Accident of Fate

Download or read book Accident of Fate written by Imre Rochlitz and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2011-07-07 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accident of Fate is a first-hand account of persecution, rescue, and resistance in the Axis-occupied former Yugoslavia. At the age of thirteen, Imre Rochlitz fled to Yugoslavia from his childhood home in Vienna following the Nazi Anschluss, leaving his family behind. In January 1942 the Ustashe (Croatian Fascists) arrested and interned him in the Jasenovac death camp, where he dug mass graves. On the verge of death, Rochlitz was released due to the extraordinary intervention of a Nazi general. He escaped to the Adriatic coast, where he and several thousand other Jewish refugees were protected by the army of Fascist Italy. After Italy’s surrender, he joined Tito’s Partisans, becoming an officer and army veterinarian, and rescued dozens of downed Allied airmen. In 1945, he fled Yugoslavia’s Communist regime and reached liberated southern Italy. In 1947, at the age of twenty-two, he emigrated to the United States. With unique personal photographs and documents supporting the text, this eyewitness narrative covers little-known topics and provides a revealing historical account of the period. The book helps clarify and render accessible the complexities and contradictions of conflict and genocide in wartime Yugoslavia.

Book Space and Fates of International Law

Download or read book Space and Fates of International Law written by Ekaterina Yahyaoui Krivenko and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-17 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book offers the first analysis of the influence exercised by the concept of space on the emergence and continuing operation of international law. By adopting a historical perspective and analysing work of two central early modern thinkers – Leibniz and Hobbes – it offers a significant addition to a limited range of resources on early modern history of international law. The book traces links between concepts of space, universality, human cognition, law, and international law in these two early modern thinkers in a comparative fashion. Through this analysis, the book demonstrates the dependency of the contemporary international law on the Hobbesian concept of space. Although some Leibnizian elements continue to operate, they are distorted. This continuing operation of Leibnizian elements is explained by the inability of international law, which is based on the Hobbesian concept of space, to ensure universality of its normative foundation.

Book excerpt: #1 New York Times Bestseller! In the second book of the Carve the Mark duology, globally bestselling Divergent author Veronica Roth reveals how Cyra and Akos fulfill their fates. The Fates Divide is a richly imagined tale of hope and resilience told in four stunning perspectives. The lives of Cyra Noavek and Akos Kereseth are ruled by their fates, spoken by the oracles at their births. The fates, once determined, are inescapable. Akos is in love with Cyra, in spite of his fate: He will die in service to Cyra’s family. And when Cyra’s father, Lazmet Noavek—a soulless tyrant, thought to be dead—reclaims the Shotet throne, Akos believes his end is closer than ever. As Lazmet ignites a barbaric war, Cyra and Akos are desperate to stop him at any cost. For Cyra, that could mean taking the life of the man who may—or may not—be her father. For Akos, it could mean giving his own. In a stunning twist, the two will discover how fate defines their lives in ways most unexpected. Praise for Carve the Mark: #1 New York Times bestseller * Wall Street Journal bestseller * USA Today bestseller * #1 IndieBound bestseller “Roth skillfully weaves the careful world-building and intricate web of characters that distinguished Divergent.” —VOYA (starred review) “Roth offers a richly imagined, often brutal world of political intrigue and adventure, with a slow-burning romance at its core.” —ALA Booklist
