Book Fast Wavefront Reconstruction in Large Adaptive Optics Systems Using the Fourier Transform

Download or read book Fast Wavefront Reconstruction in Large Adaptive Optics Systems Using the Fourier Transform written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wavefront Reconstruction using the Fast Fourier Transform and spatial filtering is shown to be computationally tractable and sufficiently accurate for use in large Shack Hartmann-based adaptive optics systems (up to at least 10,000 actuators). This method is significantly faster and can have lower noise propagation than traditional VMM reconstructors. The boundary problem which prevented the accurate reconstruction of phase in circular apertures using square-grid FTs is identified and solved. The methods are adapted for use on the Fried-geometry. Detailed performance analysis of mean squared error and noise propagation for FT methods is presented, using both theory and simulation.

Book Advanced Techniques for Fourier Transform Wavefront Reconstruction

Download or read book Advanced Techniques for Fourier Transform Wavefront Reconstruction written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The performance of Fourier transform (FT) reconstructors in large adaptive optics systems with Shack-Hartmann sensors and a deformable mirror is analyzed. FT methods, which are derived for point-based geometries, are adapted for use on the continuous systems. Analysis and simulation show how to compensate for effects such as misalignment of the deformable mirror and wavefront sensor gain. Further filtering methods to reduce noise and improve performance are presented. All these modifications can be implemented at the filtering stage, preserving the speed of FT reconstruction. Simulation of a large system shows how compensated FT methods can have equivalent or better performance to slower vector-matrix-multiply reconstructions.

Book Fast Fourier and Wavelet Transforms for Wavefront Reconstruction in Adaptive Optics

Download or read book Fast Fourier and Wavelet Transforms for Wavefront Reconstruction in Adaptive Optics written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wavefront reconstruction techniques using the least-squares estimators are computationally quite expensive. We compare wavelet and Fourier transforms techniques in addressing the computation issues of wavefront reconstruction in adaptive optics. It is shown that because the Fourier approach is not simply a numerical approximation technique unlike the wavelet method, the Fourier approach might have advantages in terms of numerical accuracy. However, strictly from a numerical computations viewpoint, the wavelet approximation method might have advantage in terms of speed. To optimize the wavelet method, a statistical study might be necessary to use the best basis functions or ''approximation tree.''

Book Tractability of Complex Control Systems

Download or read book Tractability of Complex Control Systems written by Laurent Alexis Dewhirst Lessard and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2011 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is divided into two main parts. In the first part, we consider the problem of efficiently computing wavefront estimates for use in adaptive optics hardware on ground-based telescopes. Our contribution is a warm-started single-iteration multigrid algorithm that performs as well as conventional vector-matrix-multiplication methods, but at a fraction of the computational cost. We used numerical simulations to compare our algorithm to a variety of other published methods, and validated our findings at the Palomar Observatory. In the second part, we consider feedback control subject to an information constraint. Using a novel algebraic framework, we are able to prove many structural results, including a new convexity result, in a natural and purely algebraic way. We also develop a new condition we call internal quadratic invariance, under which the controller synthesis can be cast as a convex optimization problem. This describes the most general class of tractable decentralized control problems known to date. Both parts of the thesis fit into the broader question of tractability of complex systems. In the first part we look at a practical example which is difficult because of the large number of sensors and actuators. In the second part, we look at decentralized control, which is difficult because of the non-classical information constraint.

Book Adaptive Optics for Biological Imaging

Download or read book Adaptive Optics for Biological Imaging written by Joel A Kubby and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-04-26 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adaptive Optics for Biological Imaging brings together groundbreaking research on the use of adaptive optics for biological imaging. The book builds on prior work in astronomy and vision science. Featuring contributions by leaders in this emerging field, it takes an interdisciplinary approach that makes the subject accessible to nonspecialists who want to use adaptive optics techniques in their own work in biology and bioengineering. Organized into three parts, the book covers principles, methods, and applications of adaptive optics for biological imaging, providing the reader with the following benefits: Gives a general overview of applied optics, including definitions and vocabulary, to lay a foundation for clearer communication across disciplines Explains what kinds of optical aberrations arise in imaging through various biological tissues, and what technology can be used to correct for these aberrations Explores research done with a variety of biological samples and imaging instruments, including wide-field, confocal, and two-photon microscopes Discusses both indirect wavefront sensing, which uses an iterative approach, and direct wavefront sensing, which uses a parallel approach Since the sample is an integral part of the optical system in biological imaging, the field will benefit from participation by biologists and biomedical researchers with expertise in applied optics. This book helps lower the barriers to entry for these researchers. It also guides readers in selecting the approach that works best for their own applications.

Book Adaptive Optics for Vision Science

Download or read book Adaptive Optics for Vision Science written by Jason Porter and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2006-06-12 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading experts present the latest technology and applications in adaptive optics for vision science Featuring contributions from the foremost researchers in the field, Adaptive Optics for Vision Science is the first book devoted entirely to providing the fundamentals of adaptive optics along with its practical applications in vision science. The material for this book stems from collaborations fostered by the Center for Adaptive Optics, a consortium of more than thirty universities, government laboratories, and corporations. Although the book is written primarily for researchers in vision science and ophthalmology, the field of adaptive optics has strong roots in astronomy. Researchers in both fields share this technology and, for this reason, the book includes chapters by both astronomers and vision scientists. Following the introduction, chapters are divided into the following sections: * Wavefront Measurement and Correction * Retinal Imaging Applications * Vision Correction Applications * Design Examples Readers will discover the remarkable proliferation of new applications of wavefront-related technologies developed for the human eye. For example, the book explores how wavefront sensors offer the promise of a new generation of vision correction methods that can deal with higher order aberrations beyond defocus and astigmatism, and how adaptive optics can produce images of the living retina with unprecedented resolution. An appendix includes the Optical Society of America's Standards for Reporting Optical Aberrations. A glossary of terms and a symbol table are also included. Adaptive Optics for Vision Science arms engineers, scientists, clinicians, and students with the basic concepts, engineering tools, and techniques needed to master adaptive optics applications in vision science and ophthalmology. Moreover, readers will discover the latest thinking and findings from the leading innovators in the field.

Book Integrated Modeling of Telescopes

Download or read book Integrated Modeling of Telescopes written by Torben Andersen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-23 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ground- or space-based telescopes are becoming increasingly more complex and construction budgets are typically in the billion dollar range. Facing costs of this magnitude, availability of engineering tools for prediction of performance and design optimization is imperative. Establishment of simulation models combining different technical disciplines such as Structural Dynamics, Control Engineering, Optics and Thermal Engineering is indispensable. Such models are normally called Integrated Models because they involve many different disciplines. The models will play an increasingly larger role for design of future interdisciplinary optical systems in space or on ground. The book concentrates on integrated modeling of optical and radio telescopes but the techniques presented will be applicable to a large variety of systems. Hence, the book will be of interest to optical and radio telescope designers, designers of spacecrafts that include optical systems, and to designers of various complex defense systems. The book may also find use as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate courses within the field. "Adaptive Optics" is an exciting and relatively new field, originally dedicated to correction for blurring when imaging through the atmosphere. Although this objective is still of high importance, the concept of Adaptive Optics has recently evolved further. Today, the objective is not only to correct for atmospheric turbulence effects but also for a range of static and dynamical telescope aberrations. The notion of adaptive optics has expanded to the field of "Wavefront Control", correcting for a variety of system aberrations. Wavefront control systems maintain form and position of optical elements with high precision under static and dynamical load. In many ways, such systems replace the steel structures of traditional optical systems, thereby providing much lighter systems with a performance not possible before. Integrated Modeling is the foremost tool for studies of Wavefront Control for telescopes and complex optics and is therefore now of high importance. Springer has recently published two books on telescopes, "Reflecting Telescope Optics" by R. Wilson, and "The Design and Construction of Large Optical Telescopes" by P. Bely. Noting that a new (and expensive) generation of Extremely Large Telescopes with apertures in the 30-100 m range is on the way, the present book on integrated modeling is a good match to the existing books and an appropriate specialization and continuation of some subjects dealt with in those books.
